Work Text:
A gentle breeze and a whisper of a song greeted Luonnotar into the world. Gentle moonlight bathed her being as she formed, an overwhelming sensation of affection guiding her to place a soft kiss upon the forehead of a golden haired traveler much to their astonishment.
They and their pale floating companion stared in awe at Luonnotar who paused to feel and exist for the first time, newborn to Teyvat.
Sounds that both do and do not translate into meaning are uttered from the pale ones as Luonnotar basked in being alive. These are her first seconds of existing, yet memories of a lifetime flowed into her in glimpses. Like flickering shadows cast by sunlight casted upon tree leaves.
Luonnotar trailed after the gold and pale duo, drawn by instinct and intrinsic affection. Luonnotar already knows them, even though they have only just met upon her creation moments ago.
The pale one backtracked and attempted to shoo Luonnotar away. She popped away, hidden and hurried to the moon's side, an instinctive call that tugged her towards her creator.
The moon softly touched her forehead to Luonnotar, love and hope instilled through the simple act. Memories faint yet full of emotions so strong flowed through Luonnotar, the moon knows her and loves her, even though Luonnotar has only just been brought into being. She is not the moon, but the moon blessed her with a part of her own being, a fragment of her soul for safeguarding.
With this fragment of the moon's soul, Luonnotar listened as the moon asked her to aid the golden traveler and floating companion. Though the memories are vast and blur together, she knows that she shall stay by their side until the time is right. To guide the future or rather past moon to the moments in time she must interfere in. Until she helps the moon return to the world.
The weight of the future is placed upon the little kuuhenki and yet it does not make her falter. Not when she felt the immense love and faith the moon placed in her and the steady understanding of the companionship that she will experience.
She understood everything and yet nothing, but she has faith in the moon. The moon has faith in her friends, thus so does Luonnotar.
With little fanfare, she departed to follow the two as the moon trekked in the opposite direction, a necessary parting that fate has insured. Even as the moon faded from this time and place, Luonnotar knows this will not be the final goodbye, not yet.
It is only the start of this story.
==
Luonnotar trailed after the gold and white-haired friends of the moon, carefully tucked behind various foliage and other obstructions to avoid detection. They are headed to meet a friend- a friend of the moon as well- and the land sings of the moon's essence. Just as she was born from an aspect of the moon, so too is the energy that was entrenched in this place.
The pair stopped to talk with an antlered woman, who carried heavy traces of the moon within and around her. It ripples with the tides of kuuvahki- yes that was the moon's power- and shifts in tune with the smaller creatures.
Conversation flowed on and eventually Luonnotar grew antsy to return to the traveler's side. She shifted the flow of kuuvahki and popped into being within sight of them.
Paimon exclaimed in surprise and there was a faint gasp from the Moonchanter woman. Luonnotar was quite fond of the way Lauma (right that was her name, a friend of the moon) rolled Luonnotar's name. She eagerly flitted over to the traveler's side, eager to fulfill the task assigned by the moon.
The three discuss her with confusion but she does not mind. This all happened for a reason and it is so ensure the moon's own birth and rebirth. Luonnotar knew this deeply and with a certainty that kept her focused and reassured with ease.
Paimon giggled and asked her to help locate something called treasure. Luonnotar could not recall what that was and tilted her head in confusion of her own. Regardless she will stay by the traveler's side.
As night fell and the traveler restlessly traveled far and far from their resting place, Luonnotar grew excited at how close they had come to where the little lost dove cooed the song of her creation. She appeared before the traveler and guided them to the dove's cave.
The golden haired outlander heard the notes of a melody sung from the cave and Luonnotar opened the passageway, satisfied at the task completed as requested by the full moon of the future (past).
This was not the moon that created Luonnotar, yet it also was. Who her creator once was, her prologue. The young moon called for Luonnotar as she appeared before her and was answered. She and Luonnotar both would be key to bringing back the full moon.
Nevertheless, Luonnotar felt the warmth and affection of the partial moon before her, a comforting feeling despite the detached nature of it. She felt comforting to the partial moon in turn, being born of the fuller moon of the future, a familiar yet alien piece of that presence.
The next time the traveler visited the partial moon, the white floating companion Paimon joined them both.
Luonnotar popped into being, eager to feel the traces of the partial moon, not her creator yet also so. The partial moon perked up at the sight of the special kuuvahki, and gently cupped Luonnotar's head with growing warmth like a embers slowly stoked into a roaring fire. She basked in that affection that would one day soon be love.
Time passes, so much yet so little. The traveler and their many companions live, laugh and love under the watchful gaze of the moon above. The full moon in stasis, both alive and not until her plan unfolds. Luonnotar is there is witness it all, alongside the traveler.
When the partial moon sends herself to the shadow of the moon, Luonnotar knows it will be time soon. She mourns knowing what the partial moon must undergo in that place yet also is joyful that Luonnotar of the past shall be born and the full moon's return shall follow. It is left to Luonnotar to anchor the full moon back to Teyvat of the (present/past/future).
She will not fail the moon.
The keen snake- Nefer- puts the pieces together and itnently gazes upon Luonnotar, to which she bobs eagerly and with glee at the clever human. Luonnotar fully lets Nefer in, giving her the glimpse of the moon's memories of the present/past. She is confident in the kuuvahki that the moon left to shield the mortal's eyes from the strain of past viewing will not allow the harm the mortals fear.
Indeed they see it all and Nefer is left untouched with no price paid for the costly vision. THe moon had thought of it all and of her friends.
It was almost time and Luonnotar is ready. She was born for this.
Time waits for none and before long it begins and ends.
The sky was wrenched open by greedy, artificially divine hands. The world seemed to be ending, the mortals bravely faced off against an impossibly daunting foe despite all odds stacked against them.
It was poetic as it was dire but they stood against the madman regardless.
Their deeds do not go unrewarded, even when all seems lost they pull through.
The frostmoon was brought down to Teyvat, the first aspect of the full moon.
The land and energy soaked into its core from ages past, the kuuvahki and the home the moon had chosen, the second aspect.
Finally, Luonnotar at traveler's side triumphantly and with purpose in her entire being, the third aspect.
All together the pieces came together and Luonnotar was satisfied at the pull that drew her with the other two. It was her end and the full moon's beginning.
Luonnotar knew the warmth and love that gave her life and then nothing-
Awareness returned to Luonnotar suddenly with a shock. She had fulfilled her mission from the moon, to ensure the events that would lead to the full moon's return unfolded.
Her purpose had been completed to welcome the full moon back to Teyvat.
So why had Luonnotar brought back to existence?
She is surrounded by the pure energy and presence of the full moon. Where the partial moon had felt like a slow, weak tide, the full moon is a strong wave oscillating and unending in its vigor.
The full moon stands below her alongside the traveler and Paimon, the former softly fond and the latter two astounded.
Luonnotar darted over to the traveler who naturally reached up to pet her head so gently and full of relieved love. Paimon chimes in with her own relief and joy at this reunion.
She fell into the embrace of the full moon, the love and joy so strong and genuine. Her creator had brought her back, not for a purpose but to simply exist.
Luonnotar was loved and she lived.
