Mercredi couldn’t sleep. A specific moment from the evening kept replaying in her mind.
" Standing alone in her dark blue and black gown and her third glass of punch in her hand, she gazed with disdain at the monotony of the evening… until a noisy latecomer caught her attention at the entrance to the ballroom.
At first she saw three young men she didn’t recognise step through the doorway, laughing. But as they moved aside, the first thing that caught Mercredi’s eye was a most unusual head of hair: blue and pink tips against a blonde background. As she revealed herself fully in her sea-green dress, the young woman looked both cheerful and slightly lost amidst all this stuffy nobility.
For the first time in her twenty-one years, her heart skipped a beat at the sight of those childlike, utterly captivating features.
Mercredi looked around to regain her composure, immediately noticing the astonished and disapproving glances of the guests around her."
