Chapter 1: Chapter 1 - Arrival

Chapter Text

The grey sky hung heavily above London. Before the student residence stood a brown haired girl, equipped with only a suitcase and a backpack.

She opened the glass doors and made her way to the staircase, struggling with her luggage up until she reached the third floor. The girl rummaged through her pockets, pulling out a silver key with a little plastic tag that said "306" and unlocked the door. Putting aside her backpack and suitcase, she took a short look at her new home. It was a small and simple room, much different from what she was used to having but it didn't bother her much - it's not as if she'd spend a lot of time in here anyway, she thought to herself. Then she began unpacking her bags.

After some time she had unpacked everything that was important. Her few clothes laid messily in the small wardrobe, the bedsheets were put on, and the desk was decorated with a ton of history books, notepads, a small pencilcase, and her laptop. On her bedside table laid a dark green notebook, inscripted in golden letters with "Lara Croft".

Lara's journey had not been long so she had told herself that she could just do the grocery shopping after her arrival - which she noticed had been a stupid decision when her stomach started growling a little. She grabbed her wallet and started looking for the nearest supermarket. A few streets from the residence she found a small shop, "Rogers' Super-Mart" stood above the door. Right upon entering the cashier greeted her with a "welcome". The location was fairly small but had everything she would need at first. Two other customers were busy looking at the shelves that were dimly lit. She picked a package of dark bread, noodles, and few other necessities and headed to check out. Lara left the little shop with a small paper bag, which had been a mistake as she realized when she stepped into the rain, but then remembering that she wouldn't have it too far and making a mental note for Rogers' Super-Mart. When arriving at the student residence she took note of the elevator, but choosing the stairs instead to "keep fit". On her way she ran into a few other students who didn't seem to take much note of her, busy with their own lives.

She entered her small apartement and started putting away her just-bought groceries into the mini fridge and the cabinet, only keeping out the bread and cheese, preparing a humble meal for herself. It was a bit dry but edible, after all Lara had always been more focused on what is practical rather than what is pleasing. She took a brief respite and looked around her new little home, being sure that she had made a good decision in choosing a single-person room. The last thing she could use would be a roommate who would distract her from her studies. She would have to be the perfect student. And then she would become a perfect archaeologist, just like her father had been. Even if the world failed to see that. When she would make new discoveries the world would see that they had been in the wrong when calling Richard Croft a madman. She wouldn't let herself stray from that path. Nothing and noone would stop her.

Well, she had to admit that she did feel lonely sometimes. Throughout her school life she had never really called somebody a friend, instead she focused on academic success. Sure there had been a few people in her classes that she occasionally talked to, but it always stayed inside the classroom. Seeing the posters about student parties and groups in the corridor of the student residency did make her curious, wondering if she was missing out on something. Some of them did sound interesting... She quickly erased that thought from her head. After all, Lara wasn't here to make friends.
