What can never be again

Summary:

Prompt by user agenderagenda
Call to prayer

Work Text:

The words tumbled out of Faith’s mouth- Jackie’s mouth, the mouth Faith used- without so much as a second thought. A whispered prayer, followed by a keening wail, that filled the graveyard and sent chills through every corpse.
She could feel Jackie’s bewilderment, watch the confusion on Robin and Chris’ faces.
Only Judea understood, and Faith, more than anything, wanted to reach out, to pray with him as they once did.
Jackie’s arm outstretched, and Faith flinched, the pale skin a stark reminder that she could never be again.

The wail stopped, her mouth slamming shut as her arm found its place by her side. Jackie was talking, to her, to her friends, but all Faith could feel was the emptiness. The Watcher wasn’t in Jackie, as it was Faith, once. Faith was the only one there, an echo, a pale imitation of holiness. A woman who refused to die, a woman who needed another to live.

The candle flashed out, and Faith felt her spirit curling in on itself, sensation leaving her limbs as she coiled into her own congregation, trapped within the body she chose to inhabit. Not that Jackie was a choice, as much as a need. A destiny.
