On Thin Ice

Summary:

A "and bumblebee!" rendition of a story that has been made before. This is very obviously self indulgent, I won't even pretend it isn't.

Work Text:

“… The story you are about to see has been told before. A LOT. And now, we are gonna tell it again. But different.”

The Past

The ever pragmatic head of the Schnee Dust Company, Jacques Schnee looked down at his daughter, who had recently proven herself against a challenge he never thought she'd surpass.

Weiss had just defeated a hulking suit of armor with nothing but skill, and a resolve that was hardened by years of being viewed as something beneath her father. Earning a freshly opened wound over her left eye that would later scar, blood dripping onto the floor. You see, she wanted to attend beacon, a school that has a reputation for putting nothing but the best of the best huntsman to combat the Grimm. The threat that plagued the world of Remnant for what seemed to most as an eternity. A constant that never seemed to have an end in sight in the slightest.

But there were other schools, they all served the same purpose. So what drove the heiress to fighting for this one? Distance. The chance to get away from being a doll in a glass house, an object to be looked upon but never given the chance to have a life of her own. Like her sister before her, she wanted to forge her own destiny. And that wasn't an option if she stayed under the gaze of the man that was her father.

"...Adamant to go and collude with the dregs over at Beacon I see. Why you fight so hard to fester among trash astounds me, but I see now that it'll only cost me if I halt you in pursuing this further."

The Schnee head walks away, stopping to look over his shoulder. Weiss' breath hitches, wondering what his next words were going to be. A small part of her, a traitorous minuscule part, hoped that it would be some sort of praise. "Good job", or anything that would show some hint of having a heart. But she knew who her father was, and fairy tales were of no use to the heiress.

"Thanks to this stunt I had to postpone your performance. Heal, and quickly. The scarring shouldn't be too severe, and I need you to preform to secure some favors with people with more influence."

He walks forward with not another thought spared, leaving the heiress in the hall with her only company being the empty husk of armor behind her.

Later after being patched up by Klein, her favorite butler with a vast array of personalities, she's visited by her younger brother. Whitley, a tiny version of her father that was just as self indulged but with none of the influence. Or at least that's how she perceived the boy.

His fists taps the door twice in quick succession before he enters the room, an all white landscape that would make snow jealous. Weiss sitting at a vanity looking at her new reminder of her defiance.

"What is it Whitely? Have you come to critique me? I can do without your insights." The heiress delivered with a deadpanned expression before shifting her gaze in the mirror.

Whitley gaps before smirking at her from the doorway.

"You wound me dear sister. I come to rely an important message from our father, not to detail you on your shortcomings", he chuckles, leaning against the doorframe. "He said that he wants you to come with him. He's making a showing with our dear brother."

The last sentence placated with a coating of satirical admiration before he leaves the doorway, his forwarding of the message accomplished.

"Brother...", the words felt like ash on her tongue. You see, years ago after a rampant increase in Faunus related controversy, Jacques adopted one to try and seem like something he wasn't. A Good Samaritan that saved a child from a life of hardship. That was the story he spent crafting, specifically choosing one with enough traits to appear animalistic, but normal enough to curate to be around high society. So he chose one that would guarantee attention, a vampire bat Faunus.

Weiss steeled her self and came to where her father was. Seeing the boy standing there blankly staring off into nothing as an assistant filed down his sharp nails. Jacques not too keen on letting the features that define them linger. Just enough to be looked at, not enough to dirty the Schnee name.

And as if sensing a change in the air, he looks up at his adopted sister. The other bird in this cage, and does the one thing that no one dares to do to the heiress.

"Blegh."

He stuck his tongue out at her before smirking at her, fangs prominent as ever. Clearly annoying the heiress. Causing her to fight a smile as she pinched her nose in exaggerated disdain for the Faunus.

"Hello to you too. I do hope you save the tomfoolery for after the show. You know how father gets."
