Work Text:
It was afternoon after school. Chores were so much faster now that Superfish was helping that DJ had finished quickly, now they were at the park. It was the one on the way home from school, the one that stretched between the road and the river. A good place to skip rocks. Today, however, DJ had an essay to finish. He was planning on skipping rocks later once it was finished, but later wouldn’t happen because he’d never get it done because Superfish wouldn’t stop fucking pestering him.
“Hey DJ.”
Case in point. Superfish was flipping a stone over and over in his gloved hand. It made a distinct clink each time he caught it, which couldn't be normal.
“Yeah, ‘Fish?”
“So . . . I was reading some books —”
“Congratulations.” DJ stayed focused. He was a good student, dammit, and cute boys had to come second to grades. Even if they had hair that was so so soft, it felt like silk—focus!!
“---And the witches in them are so stupid! They’re disconnected from their magic, like it's a tool and not, y’know, the entire reason they exist!” Superfish was waving his hands back and forth animatedly and DJ had to suppress a smile.
“Yeah, well, they’re not the experts, I guess.” DJ responded without taking his eyes off the computer. Superfish responded by plopping down next to him in a tangle of long limbs. He rested his chin over DJ’s shoulder, looking at what he was working on.
“Hey, DJ, you ever think about the universe?”
Inhale. Exhale. “Uh, I’m kinda working right now. I’ll think about the universe later.”
Superfish responded by wrapping his arms around DJ’s waist. DJ sucked in a breath. He was sitting in a public park with his textbook and computer in front of him and an annoying, kind of endearing, overprotective, obnoxiously pretty ‘Fish hanging off his back like an affectionate green-haired koala. “You know, DJ, we kinda need to focus on the core.”
Goddamnit, he’s like a puppy when he wants attention. It’s kinda cute . . .
At a certain point, DJ had found, it was better to humor Superfish’s attention-seeking ways just to distract him enough to get things done.
Looking up from his work, DJ set his pencil down with a dramatic tap. He was careful, though. Mechanical pencils were the shit and he’d found this one only yesterday on the floor of the school library. No need to break it just for dramatic effect.
DJ turned around quickly and grabbed the front of Superfish’s shirt. He cocked his head to the side, “you say you want to focus on the core, that’s just your way of saying you can’t keep your eyes off me, riiight?”
Superfish glanced down at where DJ had a handful of his dress shirt and swallowed. “Pfft. As if. I can look wherever I want.”
“Sure about that?”
“Oh, I am far superior at looking, human. My eyes are on another level.”
“Hmmm. One of your witchy powers?” DJ smirked, “Eyes in the back of your head?”
“Witches don’t have that, human.”
“You always talk about witches like you’re separated from them, you know that, right? Witches don’t have that, witches like torture, witches are cruel. Why?” DJ had removed his hand from Superfish’s shirt and was just sitting on his knees so they were facing each other. They were sitting so close enough that their knees touched, and the contact burnt like fire.
“Witches hate humans because they think we’re weak and stupid,” DJ continued, he fisted his hand in Superfish’s shirt again to emphasise the point “that doesn’t mean it’s what you feel about this world. Or about humans. Or how you feel about me.”
“I . . .” Superfish had a shocked look on his face. He glanced to where one of DJ’s brown hands was curled in his shirt, the other one bracing on the grass. DJ watched as Superfish’s eyes flicked around, feeling a bit like an insect being examined despite the fact that he was leaning over the man.
Should I keep teasing him? DJ was starting to feel like this whole situation, besides being in broad daylight, was starting to get a bit unethical. He was suddenly struck by the memory of Superfish in the clearing the afternoon they went to catch the tera beetles. The guy brought a fucking lawn chair. Nah, this is fine, Dhananjay figured. It’s Superfish. Teasing each other is the whole reason they became friends in the first place.
Deciding he may as well continue to be a dipshit, DJ leaned in to whisper in Superfish’s ear, “C’mon pretty boy, you still didn’t answer my question.”
DJ watched as Superfish’s eyes dilated, the yellow being almost completely swallowed.
He glanced down, then back up again to meet DJ's eyes, head tilted in question.
“Superfish?”
Superfish inhaled sharply at the sound of his name. DJ was starting to wonder if he’d pushed too far, then,
“Oh, fuck it,” Superfish muttered, then dragged DJ down into a kiss.
Superfish kissed like he was hungry and on a time limit, his hands burning on DJ’s shoulder and the small of his back.
Deciding that this was the best possible outcome for what he'd gotten himself into, DJ braced his firearms on either side of Superfish's head - he was laying completely on top of him now - and tried to keep up.
Despite not deluding himself and thinking that kissing Superfish was like springtime or that he tasted like roses (no, kissing just tastes like mouth), he was still on cloud nine.
The whole world seemed to concentrate down to the secluded nook of the park next to the river, down to Superfish's burning hands and burning mouth against his.
DJ ran his tongue over Superfish's bottom lip, and Superfish whined. His hands tightened on the back of DJ’s shirt, pulling him down like salvation. DJ felt like he was about to burst into flames when—
“Wait, you’re gay?”
Squeezing his eyes further shut so as to delay the inevitable, DJ pulled away. Mandy was standing at the top of the hill, pink jacket on and notebook in hand, fully armed as usual.
Shit, DJ forgot she goes on walks here.
DJ moved to his knees, above where Superfish was still laying on his back as if he was trying to merge with the grass. “Mandy, never tell anyone about this,” DJ could feel the public embarrassment burning a hole in his gut, “ever.”
“Oh, don't worry, DJ, I would never expose your secrets like that.” She paused, scratching in her notebook. “Unless it compromises club efficiency, of course.”
“Mandy, please, you can't tell the club-”
Mandy adjusted her glasses. “Listen, I don't think Eugene would react to the situation in a professional manner. Besides, it's your business, not anyone else's.”
DJ let out a sigh of relief.
“Thanks, Mandy.”
She cracked a grin. “Anytime. Just don't let me run into this again and we'll be good. Although, you may want to help him out.” She gestured to where Superfish was laying propped on his elbows with a self satisfied smirk on his still swollen lips. “He looks a bit out of it.”
Superfish raised a brow. “Oh, I’m doing great. Splendid, even.”
Mandy rolled her eyes. “Gross.” She turned to go down the path before turning back. “I am serious about never wanting to see this again, just so you know.”
DJ shook his head as she walked away. He and Superfish locked eyes and the whole ridiculous situation suddenly became hilarious. Once they started laughing they couldn't stop, cackling while holding each other until they finally calmed down. Dhananjay rested his forehead on Superfish's shoulder, still shaking with laughter.
Talk about a close call
