Work Text:
Logan doesn't particularly listen to modern music. It's Laura that introduces him to the song.
They're sitting on a bench in the park near the apartment Logan shares with Wade and Al, sharing Laura's headphones so she can show him music.
And admittedly, Logan doesn't focus enough to catch all of the lyrics, but part of it definitely stands out to him.
I take my whiskey neat
My coffee black and my bed at three
You're too sweet for me
And Logan tears up a little despite himself.
His mind swims with images of Wade decked out in Hello Kitty while Logan dresses like a depressed lumberjack. Wade drinking some disgustingly sweet, caramel, whipped cream-coated drink while Logan sips black coffee. Wade with his fruity mixed drinks while Logan drinks whiskey from the bottle. Watching My Little Pony while Logan grumbles and complains.
"What's wrong?" Laura sounds frantic. Even if she couldn't read him well (which she can) Logan is pretty sure that there are tears starting to drip down from his eyes.
"Wade." Logan manages to blubber, feeling pathetic for being overwhelmed by his feelings like this.
Wade is insane, yes, but he's also sweet. Almost childishly so. He likes sugary things and fun, innocent entertainment. And Logan makes fun of him for it. What kind of a man is he? How could he ever deserve someone like Wade?
Everything he has done, everyone he has killed. Wade deserves someone better.
Logan is spiraling, he has sense enough to know that. He's vaguely aware of Laura shaking him by the shoulders and looking extremely concerned, but he can't respond. He's shutting down, completely non-verbal.
Wade dragged him from the depths of a hell of his own design, forced him to become himself again, and gave him a safe home. What has he done in return? Grumbled and complained and bitched and killed Wade a few times over. Wade is too sweet for him.
On the edges of his consciousness, Logan can feel Laura helping him to his feet, and supporting him in walking somewhere, but the tears are falling freely now and he's remembering all of the awful things he said to Wade in the void. Insulting the very person who had saved him from drinking himself to death.
He's a damn monster.
The next thing Logan knows, Laura is kicking open the front door to the apartment and screaming for Wade.
Wade comes running out of the bedroom in a unicorn onesie, of all things, katana drawn.
When he sees Logan, he lowers the sword. "Peanut?" He looks so worried, and Logan feels even worse for making him worry like that. "What's wrong? What happened?"
"I don't know!" Laura wails, "I was showing him music, then he started crying and he wouldn't talk except he said your name and I didn't know what to do so I brought him here and-"
"Laura, take a deep breath." Wade drops the katana completely and rushes over to help Logan to get to the couch and sit down, where he swaddles him in a heart-print blanket. "What music were you listening to? What song?"
Logan sobs and buries his face in the blanket, unable to face Wade.
"Uh, it was- I think it was Too Sweet by Hozier? I don't know why it would set him off like that!"
Logan glances up in time to see understanding dawn on Wade's face, damn him for knowing Logan so well.
"Laura, will you give us some time? You can come back and stab me if I make this worse, I promise."
Laura points at Wade threateningly, "You have half an hour before I come back, claws out." Then she leaves.
Wade sits down slowly next to Logan. "This life isn't too good for you."
"You are." Logan blurts out.
Wade looks stunned beyond words for a minute, before he finally replies. "Logie, I'm not sure you listened to all the words to that song. It's about realizing the person you're with is so different from you that it can never work. He doesn't just mean sweet as in good, he means sweet as in innocent and naive. That's not us."
"Because we're not together."
"No, because we're not different in ways that would doom a relationship between us. Even going with your interpretation, I'm not a better person than you. I'm not too sweet for you, peanut. I'm a mercenary, a killer, and an unkillable jackass who can only be convinced to save the world if it would mean selfishly saving the people I love most. I'm not some angel."
"You're too good for me." Logan replies stubbornly, "Everytime I've fallen in love it's been with someone who deserves better than me."
"In love?" Wade squeaks, "You're in love with me?"
Logan just nods miserably.
"Peanut. Princess. Babygirl. Honeybadger. I've been in love with you since you passed out in that shitty bar where we met. And I don't deserve better than you."
"Yes you do!"
Wade grabs Logan's face in both hands, the horn on his onesie flopping around comically. "We're both killers. Unkillable. Traumatized. Ex-military. Self-loathing. Self-isolating. Convinced that we're unlovable. Tell me how I'm so much better and we're not a good match."
Logan blinks, thoroughly put in his place but still unconvinced.
"I've slaughtered people."
Wade waves a hand dismissively, "Old news, I've been doing that since I was a teenager."
"The people I love always die."
"Samesies. And I can't be killed, remember?"
"I've said terrible things to you."
"What? When?"
"In the Odyssey."
"I thought of that more as foreplay. Besides, I wasn't exactly being kind or honest with you at the time."
"Wade-"
"Do you want me to be happy?" Wade interrupts.
Logan stares, "Of course I want you to be happy. It's what I want more than anything else in the world."
"You make me happy." Wade cautiously leans against Logan, like the man might startle and run for the hills. Which, to be fair, is a reasonable concern. "And being with you would make me happier than anything. Doesn't that matter?"
"Of course it matters. But I'll fuck it up, Red. I always do."
"Well you will with that attitude. If being together would make us both happy, does anything else matter? Because it seems like maybe you're letting your insecurities get in the way of both of us being happy."
Logan has fully stopped crying by now, and even in his slightly foggy mind, he has to admit that Wade is making sense.
"Who knew Wade would be the voice of reason?"
They both turn to see Laura standing in the doorway.
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but Wade is right. You two would be disgustingly happy together. I'm gonna leave now so you two can kiss or whatever." And with that she makes her exit, closing the door behind her.
Logan can't help but chuckle, leaning his head on Wade's shoulder. "I'm not used to this. A safe home, a chance to be happy."
"I know, peanut. But that doesn't mean that you don't deserve it."
Logan nods slowly, "You'll have to deal with it when I freak out because I think I'm not worth loving."
"You'll have to deal with it when I do the same."
"I can handle it if you can." Logan presses a gentle kiss to Wade's cheek.
"I've always loved a challenge." Wade turns his head and kisses Logan square on the lips.
It's gentle, careful, like the moment is fragile because it's so fraught with emotion. But it's perfect.
"I love you." Wade whispers against Logan's lips.
"I love you too."
