Chapter Text
The buzzing of a phone is the first thing Hinata wakes up to. With a loud groan and a huge stretch, Hinata sleepy makes his way across his soft, white bed to grab his phone.
“Hello..?” He asks lazily, putting a hand over his mouth to stifle a yawn.
“Hinata? Don’t you know how late for work you are?!” A stern voice shoots back at him through the speaker. Hinata blinks a few times in confusion, then checks the time.
“Oh shit, I’m so sorry Suga!” Hinata exclaims, jumping out of bed. “I’ll be there soon, I promise.”
“You better, now hurry along,” Sugawara replies, a hint of frustration edging into his voice. Hinata quickly ends the call and throws on his work uniform. The traditional blue jacket and pants accompanied by the Karasuno patch are put on in a rush. Wrinkles crease the clothing here and there, but not noticeable enough for Hinata to care.
And with that, Hinata runs out of his small bedroom, grabs his car keys off the marble counter, and hurries off to his car. The drive there was quick and easy, the traffic wasn’t terrible as it was the middle of the day. Hinata parks sharply and rushes into the station.
“Hinata! There you are! We’ve been waiting for you,” Sugawara announces. Kenma turns over and waves then looks back at a case file on his desk. Nishinoya rushes over and hugs Hinata.
“Hinata~ I’ve been so sad without you here :(“ Nishinoya whines, looking at his younger with puppy dog eyes. Hinata grins, letting the older ruffle his hair.
“Me too Noya. But anyways, what was so urgent?” Hinata asks, looking over at the board.
A new case had been scattered across the bulletin board, photos, strings, and tacks covering most of the smooth brown surface. Each photo was either a dead body or a possible suspect within the murders.
“A new string of murders has appeared? This will be easy as pie,” Tanaka declares, overly confident in his abilities. A girl, Shimizu Kiyoko, rolls her eyes.
“You know you do none of the work, it’s mainly Hinata who gets most of it done,” Kiyoko explains. Tanaka looks at her with googly eyes, practically drooling.
“Ms. Kiyoko corrected me, a day in heaven!”
Tanaka pretends to faint, clutching his head dramatically. The entire team sighs, shaking their heads at his usual antics.
“Anyways,” Yamaguchi finally gets us on track. “Where do you want us to start with this case?”
Sugawara points at a symbol on the board. “Right now, this is the major issue within the case. Every time someone has gotten close to solving, they manage to disappear. We need someone track down what’s happening and who’s behind this. Hinata, Yamaguchi, Kenma, I want you three to be the lead investigators.”
The three of them nod in unison. While Sugawara continues to assign roles within the case, Yamaguchi scoots closer to Hinata.
“I see the gears turning in your head, you already have an idea for the case, don’t you?” Yamaguchi questions. And he wasn’t wrong, Hinata did have some distinct idea of what was happening, but not enough to go off of yet.
“I might, but it’s not that important right now,” Hinata finally answers, cutting off his train of thought. Yamaguchi raises an eyebrow, but doesn’t push.
“Alright everyone, let’s figure this out so I can hopefully get my pay raise finally,” Sugawara announces, mumbling the last part under his breath with a shake of his head. Thankfully no one hears him, everyone already splitting off to their respective jobs.
“Kenma, Yamaguchi, let’s catch a ride to one of the scenes,” Hinata says, motioning for the two of them to follow. They both easily slide into step next to Hinata. The three of them usually work on cases together, some of the best detectives the station has. They fall into their own spot in the car and let Kenma take the wheel.
“So,” Kenma starts a conversation while focusing on the drive. “I heard it’s not just one person involved, but a whole string. This might just be a mafia incident or something.”
Yamaguchi thinks, but nods along anyways. “You could be right Kenma, this many murders in such a short time doesn’t look like it could be done by one person.” Yamaguchi adds.
Hinata stares out the window into space, his brain already in work mode. Kenma glances at him and sigh. “Hinata, you’re shutting down again.”
“Hm?” Hinata quickly snaps out of it. “Sorry, I was just thinking. Doesn’t these murders remind you of the last case? The one with so many enemies they all teamed up together to take them down?” Hinata asks, still keeping his eyes outside. Kenma’s eyes narrow slightly.
“It could be, but let’s not jump to conclusions yet, we still haven’t observed the scenes in person yet,” Yamaguchi states, hanging his arms on either seat in front of him.
Hinata nods, his mind still racing with possibilities. Hinata’s mind has always been quick to find answers, like connecting pieces of a puzzle together. That’s probably why he’s always one of the lead investigators in cases like these. The car finally slows to a stop, allowing them to finally get a good look at the crime scene. As each of them step out of the vehicle, they already see multiple police cars with cops guarding the scene.
Bright yellow tape that practically screams “DO NOT ENTER” surrounds the entire building. Hinata walks up to the door first, stepping carefully under the tape. Kenma and Yamaguchi quickly follow behind. An officer looks over and nods respectfully over to Hinata.
“Detectives. I’m Officer Bokuto.” The man states, shaking Hinata’s hand.
“Officer, I’m Detective Hinata, and this is Detective Kenma and Detective Yamaguchi. We’re here to look over the scene,” Hinata explains, while also introducing his fellow investigators.
The spiky, white haired man nods. “Right this way.” Bokuto leads them to a more closed off section of the building, carefully turning the mostly broken doorknob to reveal the mess.
Tables turned, papers scattered, claw marks on the ground, the entire room looked like it went through a bomb, which might not be out of the question. Blood trails into a small bathroom, where the corpse is still waiting. Hinata pinches his nose, a foul stench emitting from the body.
“The people from the morgue still haven’t arrived?” Yamaguchi asks, mimicking Hinata’s movements. The officer grimaces before nodding.
“Seems like it. I’ll go check on their progress while you guys investigate,” Bokuto proposes, already slipping out of the room. Kenma sighs, before exploring the room more. Yamaguchi walks over to the other side of the room while Hinata goes to examine the blood trail.
“The victim was most likely stabbed or hit here,” Hinata points to the biggest blood spot. “Then, he most likely dragged himself to the bathroom the escape his killer, that’s why there is a trail leading there,” Hinata explains, following the path.
Once inside the bathroom, Hinata glances over the bathtub. “He probably crawled inside to hide, but then the killer realized his job wasn’t finished and follow him, explaining the blood not following the even trail.” Hinata pushes back the curtain, revealing the poor soul. It looked like a guy in his mid twenties, the basic look. Brown curly hair with a tan skin. The hazel eyes were wide open, as if he was left in shock before ultimately meeting his fate. Water was still available to the eye along the walls.
“The culprit probably washed away most the blood with the water, droplets are still clinging to the sides of the shower,” Hinata mumbles, taking a closer look. Blood was clearly visible inside the drain. No traces of what the murder weapon was yet, though most likely was a knife with the amount of blood outside the bathroom.
Hinata finally steps out, walking over to Kenma.
“Find anything interesting?” Hinata asks, going onto his tippy toes to glance over his shoulder. Kenma looks over at him, sighing before fully turning around.
“Seems they cleaned up pretty good here, no tracks of their entry anywhere, they could’ve just walked into the house for all we know,” Kenma says with a scratch behind his head. Hinata turns to Yamaguchi, who was now inspecting the window. It was still fairly intact for the rest of the room being a total mess.
“This might be a clue, but I don’t know for sure yet. There’s nothing to make much progress over if the body hasn’t even been inspected yet,” Yamaguchi finalizes. Hinata stares out the window, the bright morning still shining through as if the world were still peacefully moving for everyone. Yamaguchi departs from the scene to go talk to the officer again, leaving Kenma and Hinata alone.
“Kenma, I think we should call it wraps today, we still need the information from the morgue,” Hinata mentions, turning to face him. Kenma sighs, looking away.
“You’re right, I just feel bad for the family. They might not even get closure of what happened to their son.” Hinata nods solemnly, before heading out from the room as well. Stepping outside, the sun was still as bright as it was inside. Hinata spots Yamaguchi over by the car, chatting away.
“They still haven’t responded, I don’t know what’s happening. It usually doesn’t take this long,” Bokuto explains, frustration seeping into his voice. Yamaguchi nods, looking away for a moment then finally responding.
“Well, call us back tomorrow if they ever respond, you know the stations number.” The man nods, giving him a wave before retreating to his troop. Hinata walks over to Yamaguchi, giving him a pat on the shoulder.
“Let’s head home for the day, I think we tracked enough,” Hinata states, waving over to the car. Kenma exits the scene soon after, entering the car to see Yamaguchi and Hinata waiting.
“Sorry for keeping you guys up, I was just… pondering,” Kenma vaguely tells the pair. Neither pushes, both tired in their own ways. Hinata watches the bright blue sky twinkle with its own charm, perhaps mocking their own misery of this stressful case.
Well. There’s always tomorrow..
