The street was overflowing with every manner of sound: singing and prayers, shouts of anger and casual conversation, laughter, and the joyful melodies of children running about and engaging in various games. Once again, the day was as vibrant as any other; yet Mutsumi, as she wove her way through the throng, was breathless. The people here were, by and large, poor—a state of affairs that could be considered entirely natural for a village such as this. Mutsumi continued to work tirelessly to save money to support her family, shouldering a burden of responsibility so heavy that no one else could possibly bear it in her stead. In her hands, she held nothing but a list of errands she needed to complete and a meager handful of coins.
