Deku looks at him. He is not afraid. He looks at Katsuki with something soft and final on his face, almost like an apology, and the column comes down.
The sound is very specific. Katsuki will keep it for the rest of his life.
He is on his knees in it. There is green in the rubble. He is digging and his hands are wrong, they aren't fast enough, nothing is fast enough. He already knows—he knew before he started digging, he has always known—that he is going to be three meters and one second too late for the only thing that ever mattered. He never said the only thing between them that could have meant anything. He had years and a hundred chances and a classroom at fourteen and a thousand ordinary mornings. But he never once said how important Izuku was and how terrified he was to not have him in any capacity, because saying it meant being afraid out loud and he would rather have died than be seen afraid.
He would rather have died. Right now, he gets to find out that was a lie. He would rather anything than this.
