Chapter 1
Angela
The first thing Angela Weber noticed about Bella Swan wasn't that she was beautiful. Lauren noticed that. Jessica noticed that. Mike noticed that. Half the boys in the cafeteria noticed that before Bella had even finished introducing herself in Mr. Banner's Biology class. Angela noticed something else.
Bella looked... lost.
Not in the dramatic, movie sort of way. More like someone who had accidentally wandered into the wrong classroom and was too polite to interrupt. She held herself carefully, shoulders tucked in against a rain jacket that looked too light for a Forks autumn, dark eyes quietly taking inventory of every hallway, doorway, and exit before she chose somewhere to stand.
She smiled whenever someone spoke to her. Small smiles. Careful smiles. The kind that thanked people for trying without inviting the conversation to continue.
Angela understood that feeling.
Forks High wasn't exactly a big school. There were barely four hundred students spread across all four grades. By October everyone knew who drove which truck, whose parents worked at the mill, whose little brother had gotten suspended, and who always forgot their gym clothes. Small towns noticed everything. Which meant they also remembered everything. If you were quiet, people filled the silence for you. Angela had spent most of freshman year learning that lesson.
So when Bella arrived halfway through junior year looking like she'd rather disappear into the wallpaper than walk into another classroom full of strangers, Angela made a point of waving whenever she saw her. Sometimes Bella waved back immediately. Sometimes she blinked in surprise first, as though she'd forgotten someone might actually recognize her. Then she'd smile. It wasn't much. But it was enough for now. Maybe they could be closer later!

By February, everyone had developed an opinion about Bella Swan. Jessica insisted Bella was intentionally mysterious.
"Nobody reads that much unless they want people to notice," she'd whispered once while Bella sat three tables away, completely absorbed in a paperback.
Tyler thought Bella was intimidating. Lauren declared she was stuck-up because she'd turned down an invitation to go shopping in Port Angeles after school. Angela suspected Bella simply hadn't wanted to spend three hours pretending she enjoyed shopping. Mike Newton had a different theory.
"I think she's just nice," he'd said one afternoon while tossing an apple between his hands.
Angela suspected Mike's opinion was the closest to correct.
Most boys tried to impress Bella. Tyler bragged about his truck. Eric quoted facts from whatever chapter they were covering in Biology. Even Ben Cheney somehow managed to become louder whenever Bella was nearby. Mike simply... talked to her.
He carried her books when her backpack split at the bottom. Saved her a seat in English without making a production out of it. Asked how Charlie was adjusting to having her home. Remembered she hated mushrooms after she'd mentioned it exactly once over lunch. When Bella admitted she'd never seen the beach outside La Push, Mike immediately started talking about organizing a group trip.
Small things. Thousands of them. The sort of kindnesses people rarely noticed while they were happening. Angela wasn't entirely sure Bella realized any of it. Sometimes she'd thank Mike with a quiet smile before returning to her book. Sometimes she'd roll her eyes at one of his terrible jokes. Lately...
She'd started making jokes back. Tiny, dry comments that usually took everyone a second to understand. Mike laughed every single time.

Edward Cullen, on the other hand...
Angela couldn't figure out. Nobody could. The Cullens were already mysterious enough without Edward making things stranger. Some days he stared at Bella as though she were the answer to a question only he understood. Other days he acted as though simply sharing oxygen with her was deeply offensive. It would've been romantic if it weren't so unsettling.
Bella, strangely enough, didn't seem particularly interested. The first week, she'd looked curious. Who wouldn't have been? Edward Cullen was beautiful in the sort of impossible way that made magazine models seem ordinary. Every girl in school watched him. Bella had... for maybe three days.
Then she'd stopped.
Not because she disliked him. Not because she was trying to ignore him. She simply seemed to decide that whatever was going on with Edward Cullen wasn't worth spending any more energy trying to understand. Whenever he spoke to her, she answered politely. Whenever he disappeared for days at a time, she shrugged and went back to whatever novel she was reading.
Angela wasn't sure Edward knew what to do with that. She caught him watching Bella far more often than Bella ever looked at him. As the weeks passed, that only made his behavior seem stranger. It was as though Edward expected Bella's world to revolve around him. Instead...
Bella's world kept getting a little bigger. One lunch table. One conversation. One quiet smile at a time.

The student council announced the Spring Dance over the morning announcements.
"Remember, ladies," Mrs. Cope's cheerful voice crackled through the aging intercom, "this year is a girls' choice dance."
A chorus of exaggerated groans rolled through the cafeteria before the announcement had even finished.
Jessica immediately launched into a discussion about dresses and whether asking someone first looked desperate or confident, depending on who was doing the asking.
Connor Sullivan spent the entire lunch period pretending not to stare at Lauren Mallory from across the room.
Eric Yorkie, meanwhile, was enthusiastically explaining this year's theme to anyone who would listen, complete with ideas for decorations that no one on student council had actually asked for. Angela found it strangely endearing. Eric had a habit of getting excited enough for three people.
Mike Newton barely touched his lunch. Instead, he drummed his fingers against the table, stole glances toward Bella every few minutes, and sighed every time he lost whatever internal argument he seemed to be having with himself.
Bella, completely oblivious to the emotional crisis happening fifteen feet away, sat with her paperback propped against her milk carton.
Angela smiled. Sometimes she thought high school could be explained with enough string and a corkboard.
If she drew it all out, Mike would have an arrow pointing toward Bella.
Jessica would have one pointing toward Mike.
Ben would have three arrows: one pointed at Eric, one at Mike, and another joining the many pointed at Edward Cullen.
Connor's arrow would point stubbornly toward Lauren, even though girls were supposed to do the asking this year.
Lauren's arrow curved neatly toward Tyler.
Tyler, of course, seemed firmly convinced arrows were pointing toward him from every girl in the building.
Eric didn't seem to have a particular arrow at all. He simply wanted someone, anyone, to think of him first; he had a compass pointing at everyone who talked to him.
Alice and Jasper existed in their own little universe. Rosalie and Emmett in another. Those relationships required no diagram.
Edward Cullen was the only one Angela couldn't place. If she'd been drawing the chart, his name would've floated off to one side with a dozen question marks around it. Some days he looked at Bella like he desperately wanted her attention. Other days he acted like she'd committed some terrible offense simply by walking into Biology. Angela had no idea which version of Edward would show up on any given day.
Bella, meanwhile, seemed blissfully unaware that she was the center of half the arrows in Angela's imaginary diagram. She was still reading.
Angela looked down at her own lunch tray and smiled to herself. That left one lonely little stick figure in the corner of the imaginary chart. Her. No arrows. No secret admirer. Just a quiet hope that if she ever worked up the courage to ask someone to the dance ... they'd smile and say yes.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few days passed, and almost nothing happened. Connor had finally worked up the courage to ask Lauren despite the dance technically being girls' choice. Lauren had answered with a noncommittal, "Maybe." Connor had spent the next two days looking like he regretted every decision he'd ever made.
Mike, however, was running out of excuses.
Angela had watched him spend almost an entire week trying to manufacture opportunities to talk to Bella. Sometimes he'd catch up with her after class only to ask something ridiculous like whether she'd finished the history homework. Other times he'd wander over to her table at lunch, clearly intending to say something important before settling for discussing the weather instead. It would've been frustrating if it weren't so painfully obvious. Mike Newton wasn't afraid of Bella Swan. He was afraid she'd say no.
So when Angela noticed him lingering outside the English hallway before lunch on Thursday, she slowed her pace just enough to become an entirely innocent bystander.
Mike nearly let Bella walk past him. Then he took a deep breath. "So..."
Bella looked up from the paperback she'd somehow managed to read while walking. "So?"
"You doing anything Fri- um tomorrow?" His voice cracked spectacularly on the last word.
Bella frowned, genuinely considering the question. "I was planning on reading."
Mike laughed, mostly because the alternative was passing out. "I kind of figured." The corner of Mike's mouth twitched. "You wanna... maybe read after dinner?"
Bella blinked. "Dinner?"
"Yeah."
She thought for a second. "Charlie usually brings dinner home on Fridays..." Realization slowly spread across her face. "Oh."
Mike immediately held up both hands. "No, no—you should absolutely have dinner with your dad. I wasn't trying to interrupt your plans."
Another pause. Angela watched three different emotions cross Bella's face in rapid succession. Confusion. Embarrassment. Then careful thought. Bella wasn't deciding whether she liked Mike. Angela was almost certain she'd already made up her mind about that weeks ago. She looked like she was trying to figure out whether Mike could possibly mean what it sounded like he meant.
Mike rubbed the back of his neck. "I mostly just wanted an excuse to spend time with you."
Bella stared at him. Not because she looked horrified. Because she looked completely, utterly surprised. Angela suddenly realized something. No one had ever asked Bella Swan on a date expecting her to say yes.
Bella glanced down at her book, closed it carefully with one finger marking her place, then looked back up. "I was actually planning on finding the Forks library on Saturday."
Mike tried very hard not to look too hopeful.
"...If you want to come."
For one glorious second, Mike simply forgot how words worked. Then his entire face lit up. "Seriously?"
Bella shrugged, suddenly fascinated by the floor. "I mean..." She smiled, small and shy. "...someone should probably make sure I don't get lost."
Mike laughed. "I could never get lost in this town! Wait! So... that's a yes to going out with me?"
Bella rolled her eyes in a way that somehow managed to look fond despite the sarcasm. "Apparently."
For just a moment, neither of them moved. They simply smiled at each other in the middle of a hallway filled with slamming lockers and students rushing toward lunch. Angela smiled to herself. There wasn't swelling music. Just two awkward teenagers who genuinely seemed to enjoy talking to each other. Somehow, it felt more romantic than half the movies Jessica insisted on making everyone watch at sleepovers.

News traveled through Forks High faster than the morning announcements.
By the time lunch ended, Tyler had already slapped Mike on the shoulder hard enough to make him stumble. "You finally did it!"
"I asked her to dinner, not the Library," Mike protested.
Tyler grinned. "Dude. A date's a date."
Mike's ears immediately turned bright red.
Across the cafeteria, Jessica had clearly reached the same conclusion. She watched Bella and Mike talking near the vending machines for several long seconds before looking away. Angela recognized the expression. It wasn't heartbreak. It was annoyance. Jessica had spent weeks assuming Mike would eventually come around if she waited long enough. Instead, he'd chosen someone else. By the end of the day, she'd already started laughing a little harder at Tyler's jokes.
Lauren noticed. Of course she noticed. Lauren had been perfectly happy encouraging Tyler's attention while Jessica chased Mike. Now Jessica had redirected her sights, and suddenly Lauren found herself interrupted every time she tried to talk to Tyler. The resulting cold war began with tighter smiles and sharper comments. Angela gave it three days before Jessica and Lauren stopped pretending everything was fine.
Across the cafeteria, another reaction caught Angela's attention. Edward Cullen. He wasn't looking at Bella. He was looking at Mike. More specifically... He was glaring. Not annoyed. Not bored. Disgusted.
It was such an unexpectedly intense expression that Angela found herself looking around to see if Mike had accidentally spilled something on him. Mike, oblivious as ever, was happily telling Tyler and Eric that Bella wanted him to show her the library. Edward's lip curled almost imperceptibly before he stood, gathered his untouched lunch tray, and walked away without a word.
Angela frowned. That was... Odd.
Mike had never done anything to Edward. If anything, Mike was one of the few people who treated the Cullens exactly like everyone else.
She glanced back toward Bella. Bella hadn't noticed Edward leave. She was laughing quietly at something in her book, across the table from Angela, blushing and refusing to look anyone in the eyes. Whatever had just happened... It clearly only mattered to one person, Edward.

The following morning Bella surprised Angela before first period. She was waiting outside the English classroom with her hands tucked into the pockets of her jacket and a book clutched against her chest. "Angela?"
Angela blinked. Bella seldom sought people out. "Hi."
Bella hesitated. "So..."
Angela smiled. "So?"
"I think Mike asked me on a date." Bella looked genuinely conflicted. "He asked me to dinner, but we're going to the Library."
Angela laughed. "And?"
"And I said yes."
"Bella … That's a date."
Bella frowned thoughtfully. "It is? I've never gone on a date. Dates don't happen in the library, right?"
Angela couldn't help smiling. "I promise you Mike Newton wasn't asking you to discuss the Dewey Decimal System."
Bella looked down at the pavement. "...Oh, okay."
There was just enough color in her cheeks to make Angela suspect she'd figured it out. "So..." Angela nudged her shoulder. "You like him?"
Bella didn't answer immediately. "I like talking to him."
Angela considered that close enough. "I still think you should ask him to the dance."
Bella opened her mouth to argue— A deafening metallic crash split the morning apart. The sound echoed across the parking lot like thunder. For one impossible second, everything froze. Then students started running. Bella's eyes went wide. "My truck."
She and Angela sprinted toward the crowd gathering near the student parking lot. Someone shouted for an ambulance. Someone else yelled Tyler's name. By the time Angela pushed through the crowd, Tyler's blue van had crumpled against the front of Bella's truck.
The windshield looked shattered. The passenger's side door was crushed inward. Angela's stomach lurched.
Emmett and Jasper were already at the van. Together they had somehow gotten the driver's door open and removed Tyler, as he was now lying on the pavement next to the crashed cars. Jasper was still leaning over Tyler, probably checking his vitals, after all their foster dad was a doctor. When Alice appeared almost instantly, taking Jasper's arm and pulling him back several steps.
Jasper looked pale. Almost sick. Angela frowned. Maybe he couldn't handle the sight of blood. People reacted to accidents differently.
Emmett took over where Jasper left off and was able to make sure Tyler was okay. When Emmett moved, Angela was finally able to see Tyler; he wasn't looking good, with a noticeable cut on his head and blood-soaked one side of his jacket.
Someone nearby gasped. Lauren burst into tears. Jessica covered her mouth. Rosalie stepped away from the crowd with a cell phone pressed tightly against her ear, speaking so quickly Angela couldn't make out the words.
The distant wail of sirens drifted through the trees.
Bella hadn't moved. She stood frozen beside Angela, staring at Tyler's motionless body. "He..." She swallowed. "...he crashed into my truck, my..."
Angela knew exactly what Bella was thinking. Most mornings Bella sat in her truck reading until the first bell. If she'd been there...
Mike reached them seconds later. He didn't ask questions. He didn't tell Bella everything would be okay. He simply stepped beside her. Close enough that, if she needed someone to lean on, she wouldn't have to ask. Without seeming to realize it, Bella shifted a fraction closer to him. Mike rested a careful hand between her shoulder blades.
"It's okay," he said quietly. "We're okay; he’ll be okay."
Bella closed her eyes for just a second before nodding.
The ambulance arrived in a blur of flashing lights and shouted instructions. Paramedics took over immediately. Students were ushered farther back. Teachers began counting heads.
Angela looked toward the Cullens again. Jasper was sitting in the passenger seat of Alice's car with his head bowed. Alice sat beside him, speaking softly enough that Angela couldn't hear. Rosalie climbed into Emmett's Jeep. Edward never took his eyes off the parking lot.
As soon as the ambulance pulled away carrying Tyler, the Cullens left almost immediately afterward, their cars disappearing onto the road before most students had even started talking again.
Angela barely noticed. She was still watching the ambulance.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Tyler survived. Dr. Carlisle Cullen had apparently met the ambulance at Forks Community Hospital. According to Lauren, who repeated the story to anyone willing to listen, the airbag had broken Tyler's nose, forced his sunglasses up, cutting his forehead, cracked several ribs, and caused dangerous internal bleeding.
"The dreamy doctor said he'll be okay," Lauren announced dramatically at lunch the following Monday. "He's going to be in the hospital for a while, but he's going to be okay."
For the first time in days, Angela felt herself breathe a little easier.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Monday morning felt strangely normal. The rain still fell. Someone had already spilled hot chocolate in the hallway before first period. Forks High had an incredible ability to continue as though nothing extraordinary had happened.
Angela spotted Bella climbing out of Mike's truck. That alone was enough to make her smile. Mike leaned across the cab to say something before Bella shut the passenger door. Bella rolled her eyes. Then she laughed. Mike waited until she was safely on the sidewalk before driving toward the student parking lot.
Angela walked over to meet her. "So..."
Bella smiled. "So."
"You've been mysteriously chauffeured to school."
"My truck's still being looked at."
Angela nodded. "And?"
Bella sighed in the way people only did when they secretly wanted to tell someone everything. "Mike stayed with me Friday after school was canceled"
Angela blinked. "He did?"
Bella nodded. "Dad had to stay at the school after the ambulance left. There were reports to write, statements to take..." She shrugged. "Mike said he didn't think I should sit alone waiting. So he drove me home."
"And then?"
Bella looked faintly embarrassed. "I made dinner, then we watched a few movies"
Angela raised an eyebrow. "You cooked?"
"It seemed rude not to."
"What did you make?"
Bella thought for a moment. "Spaghetti."
Angela laughed. "You cooked him dinner on your first date?"
Bella stopped walking. "It wasn't..." She frowned. "...was it?"
Angela couldn't help herself. "Bella."
"What?"
"You've gone to dinner together."
Bella nodded.
"Then you watched movies."
Another nod.
"You spent Saturday together as well?"
Bella sighed dramatically. "...When you say it like that."
Angela grinned. "When Mike says it, he'll probably call it your second date."
Bella buried her face in her hands for a moment. "I genuinely thought he wanted just to help me find the library." Bella laughed.
"So..." Angela prompted. "How'd Saturday go?"
Bella lowered her hands. "It was nice. We spent almost three hours in the library."
"The evidence would suggest Mike survived?" Angela teased.
"Ha, Barely. But I thought he was a goner when Dad invited him over to watch the Mariners game."
Angela blinked. "Your dad invited him?"
Bella nodded. "I think Dad was trying to intimidate him. He cleaned his rifle while Mike was sitting in the living room."
Angela burst out laughing. "That was absolutely intentional."
"I thought so too."
"What did Mike do?"
"He asked Dad about fishing gear; apparently, his family sells fishing gear," Bella stated.
Angela stared. "...Seriously?"
Bella nodded. "They spent forty minutes talking about salmon season."
"And then?"
"Dad invited him back next weekend."
Angela shook her head. "Mike Newton!"
"I know." Bella sounded just as surprised. "I think Dad likes him."
Angela couldn't blame Charlie Swan. Mike had a gift for making people comfortable. As they reached the English hallway, Angela nudged Bella gently. "So... are you asking Mike to the dance?"
Bella opened her mouth to object.
Angela folded her arms. "He already asked you on a date, and you’ve been on two without you realizing they were dates. And honestly, I think he wants you to ask."
Bella considered that. "...That's a fair point."
"I'm glad you agree."
Bella smiled. Then, unexpectedly, she tilted her head. "What about you?"
"What about me?"
"You should ask Eric."
Angela blinked. "Eric?"
"You smile every time he starts talking about the paper and what he's doing in student council."
"I do not."
"You do."
Angela opened her mouth to deny it. Stopped. Closed it again. "...Maybe a little."
Bella smiled that small, quiet smile that always looked like she'd discovered a joke no one else had noticed. "I think he'd say yes."
Angela had spent weeks worrying whether anyone would. Hearing Bella say it so matter-of-factly somehow made it seem possible. "I'll think about it."
Bella nodded. "I think you should."
The first bell rang. Students hurried past them toward their classrooms. Jessica hurried by, already laughing a little louder than usual at something Tyler had said. Lauren watched them both with narrowed eyes. Mike waved at Bella from halfway down the hall. She waved back without even thinking about it. Angela watched all of it happen. It struck her then that Bella Swan had only been in Forks a few months. Yet somehow...
Mike smiled more than he had in September. Jessica had stopped waiting around for someone who wasn't going to choose her again. Lauren had finally found something she actually cared enough about to fight for. Ben seemed to realize that his crush on Mike was not worth the emotional toll; the man was straight as a stick. Angela had worked up the courage to consider asking Eric to the dance.
Bella hadn't done any of it on purpose. She wasn't loud enough to change a room the moment she walked into it. She wasn't the kind of person who demanded attention. She simply listened. She remembered little things. She cared quietly. And somehow... The people around her found themselves becoming a little braver.
Angela smiled to herself as she followed Bella into English. Maybe Bella still thought moving to Forks had turned her life upside down. Maybe she still missed Phoenix. But Angela had a feeling that, years from now, none of them would remember Bella Swan as the quiet new girl. They'd remember the way she had slowly, almost accidentally, changed the shape of their lives. Without ever trying to be the center of anyone's story.
