Work Text:

Today was a big day, but you were unaware of that.

Your close friend, Switzerland (also known as basch) would be confessing to you today, of course he doesn’t want to admit how nervous he really is because what if you friend zone him? That would only be embarrassing for himself.

His cheeks flushed at the thought of being rejected by one he is so close to, a heavy ache settles in Basch’s chest just thinking of it.

Previously he had been able to play off his little ‘crush’ on you, though his little sister, Liechtenstein eventually caught on, leading him to be interrogated anytime  Erika had the chance to. She knew him well and saw through his act, noticing the way his eyes would soften anytime someone mentioned you or if he was something even regarding your country.

Basch shook his head, realizing he had become lost in his thoughts. ‘I cannot back out now’ he thought, scolding himself. If he does not tell you, his feelings will only grow stronger and there is only a matter of time before someone else ends up with you. He doesn’t know what he would do if you were in love with another. So he stood firmly on his decision to confess.

A knock at his bedroom door startled him from his thoughts, a soft yet concerned voice coming through the other side of the door.
“Big brudar? Are you all right…you have not been out of your room once this morning..”
It’s Liechtenstein. Erika had been worried about her brother, this was incredibly unlike him to go off schedules.

Basch stood up from the edge of his bed where he was sitting, made his way over to the door, creaking it open. “Good morning, Erika. I am fine..I appreciate your concern.”

She smiled with relief, but, she noticed the conflicted look in his eyes, her head slightly tilts. “Are you sure? You can always tell me, big brudar! I am here for you as you are here for me.”

He paused, opened his door wider to let her in. His brows furrow and his cheeks flush a rosy pink.
“I suppose..I will tell you..”
he steps back, expecting her to follow into his room, and like expected she gleefully does.

There was a beat of silence before he slightly looked down, tilting his face away from her, his blond hair falling into his face. “…I..am confessing to them this afternoon.”

Erika’s eyes widen, but they glimmer like this is what she has been waiting for. “Really?! I am so sure they will say yes, big brudar!! Are you going to take them out?!”

He grumbles silently, the flush on his cheeks spreading, he tries to play it off like usual.
“..Yes, I am taking them out to lunch..and then we will walk near the stream..I will tell them there about how I really feel.”

Erika gleams, clasping her hands together. “Wow you must REALLY like them if you’re willing to spend money on them! Can I help you get ready?!”

Basch sighs. “You can.” He anxiously toyed at the cuff of his button up, glancing over at her “I do not want to mess this up, your help will be useful. But please do not let me look like a clown.”

Erika smiles widely in return, giving Basch a sharp nod. “I will not let you down, big brudar.”

Erika helped her big brother get ready, helping him choose an outfit and even brushing his hair, she also gave him some advice, not that she had much experience or anything but she told him what she had.

[Reader pov]

You were excited for today, Basch, your very close friend was taking you out to lunch today, which is rare given how tight he is about money. You were getting ready, already excited just thinking about it, your friend Alfred was in your room with you, basically just running his mouth.

Alfred leaned over your vanity. “Yo, dude..do you like Switz?” He asked with a smug smile, nudging them with his elbow.

You let out a small noise at his nudge, he nearly made you mess up your hair! “Dont do that,Alfie!”You playfully push him “I mean yeah, I do..he’s a great friend” you smiled

He rolled his eyes, standing up straight and crossing his arms. “No, I mean like crush like. Like, like-like. Wanna kiss and get married like, y’know what I mean?”

You paused, eyes widening, you got a nervous smile on your lips. “Uh…yes…? What if I’m not opposed to the idea of that..?” You let out a nervous sounding chuckle, fidgeting with the hem of their sleeve.

Alfred waggles his brows at them. “Oooooh got a crush!!!!! Youre going on a date! …if he hurts you I’ll blow his country to hell!” He exclaimed, pumping his fist, just sounding proudly belligerent.

You snort. “Pshh..yeah, so what? And..he wouldn’t hurt me, not on purpose, at least..” you turn back to the mirror. “hey, Alfie? How do I look?”

He tilted his head down towards her, rubbing his chin in thought. “You look good dude, I think he’s gonna completely drool over you and then he’s going to blow ALL of his money on you” he smirked “watch, you two will be married in at least a week!” He fake sniffles in disbelief. “….my best bud is all grown up now..”

You look at him, blink blankly. “…Uhm..yeah..thanks..? It’s just lunch, Alfie..” Youou got up. “thanks anyways.” You smile and pat his arm awkwardly.

He looked stupidly proud. “Yeah! You’re super welcome! Anything for my friend” He put an arm around their shoulder, pulling you close, his voice lowered. “seriously….if he hurts you he’s dead…” He pulled away. “ANYWAYS! Have fun!!” Alfred proceeds to gleefully leave the room .

You watch him leave, letting out an exasperated sigh as he closed the door behind him. ‘what if Alfred’s right?’ You thought with hope in your heart.

It wasn’t too long before both of them arrived to the restaurant.

Unlike basch’s usual stern expression he looked..nervous for once. He greeted you.
“Good afternoon” He pulls your seat out. “…Uou look gorgeous.” Basch said shyly, a subtle flush on his cheeks.

You smile. “Good afternoon! Thank you..you look good as well” You sat down.

A nervous, awkward smile played on Basch’s lips as he seated himself, he was rather embarrassed from the flush on his face but his eyes softened as he looked at you.

They both talked about various things and ate some delicious food. You hope the bill wasn’t too much, knowing how Basch was when it came to money. Soon they finished up, leaving the restaurant together.

Basch glanced at you as they walked side bye side, after a few moments of silence he spoke up. “…I want to show you somewhere. If you are not busy.” He fully turns his head towards them.

You look at him with the same smile from earlier, warm, happy and soft. The same smile that made Basch’s heart flutter. “Of course, I’m not busy, we usually spend extra time together anyways so I made sure my schedule was clear”

His shoulders relax with relief. He was worried that you may have had plans but he was glad to hear about your thoughtfulness. He suddenly stopped in his track.

After a few seconds you stopped as well, looking back at him. “Are you alright?” Your brows knit together in concern.

He quickly looked at you, glanced away, then back at them once again. “Ah..yes..can I take your hand? It would- be easier to you know..lead you there that way.” He justifies himself to not make his feelings too obvious.

You nodded, holding your hand out towards him to take.

Basch forced a straight face, taking your hand. He took the lead, bringing them towards the creek. “I think you will like it where I am bringing you. It is beautiful..” He looks back at you from the corner of his eye.

They look up and gave him a small nod “I’m sure I will!” You glanced down at your locked hands, faintly blushing.

Basch was glad he had worn his gloves. It would’ve been more embarrassing than it already is if you could feel how sweaty his hand was.

They soon arrived to the stream.

Your eyes lit up at the sight, the sun making the water glow beautifully, all the flowers and fauna surrounding creating a harmonious atmosphere.

After a minute of silence, basch spoke up. “What do you think?” Letting his guard down, he looks at them softly and attentively, a smile on his face. Not a huge toothy smile or anything, but a small, sincere one instead. He sat down, gently pulling you down with him.

You look at him, your hair slightly flowing in the warm breeze. “i…it’s gorgeous, Basch.” You said softly.

Their hands were still connected.

Basch made a move, intertwining their fingers together. “I..have a confession to make.” He said gruffly, but it was clear that was a part of his typical act.

Your head slightly tilted. “..You can tell me anything.” They gently squeezed his gloved hand.

He shoulders tense. “I like you. Romantically…if you feel the same way, I would like to try to be a couple.” He said sharply. Basch didn’t exactly mean to say it that way but the nerves got the best of him.

Your brows raise, a warmth spreads throughout your entire body. “I like you too..the same way!” They blurted.

Basch spoke up after a moment of silence. “So, you will be my partner?”

You chuckle nervously “Yes..”

His shoulders relax, he exhaled in relief. “Does that mean I get to kiss you, now?”

You nod eagerly, leaning closer.

Neither have done this before but Basch had half-attempted ‘practice’.

Basch held your chin with one hand, captured their lips into a small, hesitant peck, which turned into a normal kiss, though it involved some nose bumping and sloppiness.

After a few seconds they both pulled away, looking into each other’s eyes with gentle, wholehearted love.

That night, Basch told Liechtenstein of how it went. She was overjoyed for you and her big brother.
