Uno and Old Maid

Summary:

Family night was a well established tradition at the Diaz house.

Notes:

Written for Buddie Week day 3 with the prompt "Family Time"

Work Text:

Family night was a well established tradition at the Diaz house. It had started when Buck was at the 118 and Eddie was in the Academy. Whenever Buck wasn't working on a Friday night, the three of them would eat homemade pizzas and play board and card games.

It had started with Old Maid and Uno, as they were easy enough for Chris to pick up on, but had eventually evolved into more complex games. Buck did a great job of finding obscure kickstarters that made family friendly games and backing them, so their game closet was getting more and more packed with fun options.

Eventually, as they were folded into the 118 family, they ended up with other obligations on Friday nights, but they still did their best to have family night every other week. It was a time when Chris could talk about anything on his mind, and his dad and papa promised to hear him out. It was also when they broached the idea of getting him a service dog, of moving to a bigger house, of trying to give him a younger sibling.

Over the years, family night evolved, when the fourth little Diaz joined the clan. She couldn't eat the homemade pizza, but Chris took every chance he could to give her a bottle. Eventually Old Maid and Uno went back on the menu, and the more complex games were saved for after little Paloma Buckley Diaz went to bed.

It evolved again when Chris graduated high school and went off to college, and his Friday nights became more about partying and studying than his family. Paloma, Buck, and Eddie still played, of course, but one of their number was missing.

Eventually Paloma graduated too, and was off at college herself. But Buck and Eddie didn't have long to wait before family night evolved again, as Chris introduced little Javier Diaz into the family. He was too young for games, but as Buck pointed out, that wouldn't last forever, and eventually they'd be back to Uno and Old Maid.

Eddie couldn't wait.
