Chapter Text

Izuku Midoriya had tried his hardest to figure out what his quirk was.
He had attempted to pull objects toward him like his mother and breathe fire like his father, but it had all been in vain!
It seemed as though the world had decided he simply wasn't meant to discover his quirk. It was so frustrating!
Kacchan had gotten his long before him, and he felt like he was lagging so far behind!
Take right now, for instance: he was trailing at the back of the line while Kacchan and the others marched through the woods, crossing a log over a small stream.
Then, Katsuki fell off the log.
In a sudden burst of fear and concern, Izuku reached out his hands, trying to stop his friend's fall.
For a moment, he felt something surge through his hands like an electric shock.
But Katsuki wasn't stopped by an invisible force. Instead, the water in the stream rose up as if alive and caught Katsuki before he hit the surface.
In an instant, Izuku's eyes lit up like tiny stars.
"That's my QUIRK!" he exclaimed, starting to hop excitedly on the spot.
Unfortunately, the moment Izuku lost his concentration, the water lost its solidity, and Katsuki fell into the stream.
The boy gasped "Sorry, Kacchan!"
"DEKU!"

Inko Midoriya was cleaning the house when she heard the doorbell ring.
She went to open the door and found two boys standing there, holding her son and Katsuki, both battered and unconscious, by their feet.
After Inko let out a scream, the heavier boy, Tsubasa, explained calmly.
"Ku can control water." Tsubasa said "Then he and Kats ended up fighting in the river. Ku had the home-field advantage, but Kats was a beast. It was really cool."
Inko didn't hear a word of it; she was too busy grabbing medical supplies.
Despite the little scuffle with Kacchan, Izuku was happy. He had finally discovered his quirk, and it was amazing!
He just wished he hadn't broken his quirk the very next day.
The day before, he had managed to control the river water quite well. But for some reason, he couldn't even move a glass of water, no matter how hard he tried!
Maybe he could only control river water? Or running water? Or water...
"Deku!"
Before Izuku could think any further about what kind of water he could control, Katsuki slammed his hands onto the table, scorching it and knocking over the glass.
"We only tied yesterday because we were in a river!" Katsuki shouted, as Izuku stared at him "Let's fight here so I can kick your ass!"
Izuku bit his lip "I'm sorry, but it seems like my quirk doesn't work on all water."
Katsuki looked at him "Are you telling me your quirk only works on rivers?"
"It seems so." Izuku admitted.
Katsuki laughed at the other boy "Then your quirk is useless!"
"It's not!"
"Yes, it is!"
"No, it's not!"
"It is!"
"No, it's not!"
"Come on, Katsuki, it's not nice to say your classmate's quirk is useless." a teacher gently scolded him as she approached the two children.
Katsuki grimaced, while Izuku beamed.
"Thank you, schoolmistress!" Izuku said "You're very kind!"
At that moment, something strange happened. A sort of yellow aura surrounded the teacher, to everyone's surprise.
"Wow, I feel powerful!" the teacher giggled, before walking away.
Izuku and Katsuki were amazed for different reasons. "Deku, did you break your quirk?" Katsuki asked, confused. He didn't think something like that could happen!
"I-I don't think so? I didn't do anything that would specifically break a quirk." Izuku replied, just as confused "Maybe it changes depending on the location?" he speculated.
Katsuki sighed. "Your Quirk is just as messed up as you are."
Katsuki Bakugo was having a good day, at least, up until that moment.
He had woken up, had a good breakfast, and was currently building a perfect castle out of toy bricks.
Then Deku showed up.
"Did you come to annoy me again with your useless quirk?" he asked.
In response, Deku burst into flames. Green flames. Then the fire vanished, he became encased in ice, and finally, he emitted electric shocks. All green, too.
For Katsuki, there was only one right thing to say: "What the damn..."
"I don't know, okay?!" Izuku blurted out "I don't get it at all! It's like my quirk changes every day!"
"What if that is your Quirk?" Katsuki said, struck by a sudden realization "Having a different quirk every day?"
Izuku’s eyes widened. What if that was his quirk? Having a different quirk every day? Something to analyze and experiment with?
"That’s so cool!" Izuku exclaimed, seemingly out of nowhere.
Katsuki laughed "As if you could become a hero with a Quirk like that!"
"Are you sure?" Izuku asked with a smile, as small flames, shards of ice, and tiny green electric sparks emanated from his hands and arms.
Even though the teachers separated them that day, Izuku was never closer to beating Kacchan than he was then.
