Antinous laughs and there is no humour in it. “You think a couple of clumsy tumbles and I’ll be so smitten I’ll give up the throne of Ithaca? Are you really that foolish?”
Telemachus stands up.
“Is this the part where you run off?” Antinous asks.
Telemachus goes to where he is sitting and looks down at him. Antinous looks up at him defiantly. He looks as if he is bracing himself to be struck.
It’s what he deserves. Instead, Telemachus just turns and goes towards the door that leads to the inner chamber. Standing in the doorway, he looks back over his shoulder.
“Well?” he says. “Are you coming or aren’t you?”
The shroud is completed ahead of schedule and Penelope chooses a husband.
For ten days before the wedding, Telemachus stands guard on the lonely palace walkway between their rooms.
