Work Text:
"Supergirl!"
The call keeps Kara on the ground despite her being ready- even desperate- to lift off and head home. But cleanup is important, both for the city and for Supergirl's image, as Cat has explained to her a dozen or more times. So no matter how impatient she's feeling, she stays to help out.
"Supergirl, just one quick question."
When she sees a reporter instead of some city worker with another help request, Kara has to pull on all the Kryptonian dignity she can claim- and some she can't- to keep from pouting or making a face. Image is important, she tells herself in what's almost a mantra, hearing it more in Cat's voice than her own.
At least it's one of CatCo's stations, so she doesn't have to play dumb or try to make an excuse to avoid answering too many questions. She can't only talk to CatCo reporters no matter what Cat says, but she definitely talks to more of them.
"Sure thing, what can I do for the people of National City?" she asks with a smile, trying very hard to keep her eagerness to leave off of her face. There's no camera crew this time, just a reporter with pad, paper, and an awestruck look on her face, but it's good practice.
The awe mixes with surprise when Supergirl agrees so readily to the request, the world still used to Superman's more... limited... contact with the press.
Kara still remembers the way Cat had ranted for an hour at learning Lois Lane was using her husband as a source and subject, about the journalistic integrity Lois was lacking by making that decision. Especially given how often it happened, and how exclusive the relationship was. Non-Lois Metropolis reporters didn't even try to get an interview with the Man of Steel anymore.
"I won't keep you too long, that's actually part of my question," the reporter continues, words stumbling over themselves as she rushes to get them out before Supergirl can change her mind. "You always help out at the scene of whatever emergency, but as soon as things are done you rush off somewhere, and National City is curious what our hero does to unwind, and where you're in a hurry to get to."
Biting back an editor's instinctive desire to correct the grammar, Kara instead lets herself think about what's waiting for her back home. "Well, I'm not going to give the people of National City too many details," she says with a wink, "but just like anyone else I enjoy relaxing a bit after some hard work. A nice bath or shower to wash the dust and dirt off, curling up with my wife to watch a good movie or show, and taking it easy for a few hours is always a good recipe for recovery."
Kara waits just long enough to make sure the reporter got her words written down before offering another smile and wave and lifting off into the sky. Listing everything she has to look forward to only made her more impatient, and she'd only promised to answer one quick question. With that out of the way she's free to head home.
The balcony door is already open for her, and Kara makes sure no one spots her as she flies inside, spinning into her 'not yet cleaned up' set of clothing as she does. Cat has very strong opinions about her trekking through the penthouse in her suit, especially immediately after a fight where she ended up thrown through multiple walls before ending things. And Kara is not about to risk sleeping on the couch because she accidentally shed a piece of rubble where Cat could step on it.
"And there's my beautiful alien idiot," Cat call from down the hall, a familiar mix of fondness and exasperation in her voice.
Familiar, but unexpected. Kara can't think of anything she's done to earn the combination. At least not lately. True, this evening's attack had interrupted their plans. But their plans were for a quiet night in, and Kara's back early enough they can still have that. Just a bit shorter night, is all.
Heading carefully down the hallway and listening for anything that might drop despite her preparations, Kara makes it to the office and leans gingerly against the doorframe. "I'm home," she says with a smile, playing it safe in case she really has forgotten something.
With Kryptonian eidetic memory it's unlikely, but better safe than sorry.
Cat's look in return is dry, but not angry. That's a good sign. "I can see that. Which is lovely, I do so enjoy spending the evening with my wife. Don't you, Supergirl?"
Ah.
There it is.
"At least it was a CatCo reporter?" Kara tries, grateful when Cat shakes her head with a slight laugh.
"I should have known this would happen, the way you can't stop saying 'wife' every 5 minutes after the wedding."
Most of the exasperation is gone now, and Kara pushes off the doorframe to cross the room towards her wife. "Can you blame me?" she asks rhetorically, eyes drinking in every inch of Cat she can see. Which, for someone with x-ray vision, is pretty much every inch. "I have the most successful, most powerful, and absolutely the most hottest wife in the world, let alone the city. It's worth celebrating."
Cat is intimately familiar with Kara's powers, and preens as she sits back in the chair, posing for Kara's benefit. Preens, but doesn't get distracted. "Most hottest is grammatically incorrect and you know it," she says, pointing a pen at Kara as if in warning.
"But it's one hundred percent factually correct," Kara counters, stopping in front of Cat's desk with a smirk. "As you are well aware."
"Mm, true," Cat acknowledges with a grin, setting the pen down carefully before standing. "And I suppose that as long as you keep your descriptors vague when talking to the press, it will be fine. And I am more than just grateful it was a CatCo reporter, you're right. If it was anyone else, you'd be sleeping at Alex's for a month."
Kara wants to argue, but she knows better. For one, it didn't happen. And for two, if she'd given a scoop like that to anyone but CatCo, as the CEO and EIC of CatCo Worldwide Media her wife would be entirely justified in being more than slightly upset with her.
Besides, there are better ways to spend their time than arguing about something that doesn't matter.
"Well, with that out of the way," she teases, lifting the hem of her shirt slightly to reveal a glimpse of skin, "why don't we treat that interview as a checklist, hm? A nice, hot, steamy bath sounds amazing right now."
It's a silly, cliched line, but Kara's not trying to be too serious and Cat knows it. And a bath does sound good right about now. If Cat's in the bath with her? That's just even better, as far as Kara's concerned. Pretty much any activity is better if Cat is there.
Especially the ones where they're naked. Kara's a big fan of those.
"Go start the water, Supergirl, I'll be right behind you."
