Work Text:

The steel frame of the car only boosted the sound of Jess’s pounding heartbeat as he sat in the passenger seat of Dean’s beat up Honda civic, shocked by what Dean had just asked him.
“Wait, what did you just say?” Jess asked, eyebrows twisted up in confusion.

“I said..” he paused for a bit, turning to make eye contact before repeating his question, “are you free on Saturday?” He scanned his face, looking for any signs of an answer to prepare him for the verbal one brewing, but he saw nothing that would shield him from the upcoming answer.

Jess thought about his answer for a moment, noting the implications of the question, he wasn’t sure if he was reading too much into it, or if his crush had really just asked him on a date. They had only known each other for about a month now so surely, Dean.. couldn’t be asking him out.

“...I mean yeah, I’m free on Saturday,” he said, hoping he said it with the right amount of nonchalantness to not seem suspicious. “But why, whats happening on Saturday?” he asked.

“Well, I was wondering if you wanted to go to the movies with me,” Dean asked, running his fingers down the grooves of his seatbelt, which he should have taken off ages ago when he parked in the school parking lot. “Its totally up to you what movie we watch, I’m not picky or anything.” He said, which Jess depicted to be him trying his best to relieve the obvious tension in the room, or.. car in this instance.

“Alright, that sounds good” Jess said absentmindedly, he was too focused on Deans’s hands running along the seatbelt, imagining his own hands interlocked between them. The thought was both terrifying and exciting, but at its greatest value, a thought.

“Okay, lets head to class then? I really don’t want Mr. Evans to get mad at us again.” Dean grinned, making Jess’s heart skip a beat, his smile was definitely his best quality, but also his most dangerous.

“Yeah, that would definitely be in our best interests.” He answered, reaching to unlock the car door when he was suddenly interrupted by Dean’s voice again, making him pause.

“Just sit there, I’ll get the door for you. We’re not in a rush or anything, right?” He said.

He watched as Dean made his way around the car, right up until he arrived in front of the car door. How could Dean remain so calm about this? He couldn’t help but to start looking down at his hands when Dean got to his side of the car, trying his best to avoid eye contact.

“Come on, I know I said we weren’t in a rush and all but I wanna get something from the vending machine.” Dean said after opening the car door, offering his hand to help Jess get out of the car.

Jess took his hand, it was crazy to him how he was only just imagining touching Dean’s hand before this. “Well, I actually have good grades in his class, so he kinda likes me. As for you, I’d suggest you start running because there’s 5 minutes left until class starts. He said, trying to resist laughing at the reaction Dean had to his overestimation of the time remaining.

Time really does fly when you’re having fun. (or in love)
