   Summary

   When Charles is 7, he comes across a sad looking boy after a race and gives him a penny, trying to coax a smile from the shy, blonde kid with no clue that it would spark over a decades worth of friendship, some despair, and a whole lot of pining.

   Max doesn’t respond. He just stands there, unmoving. 

   And Charles lets him, for a moment, waits for Max to speak on his own. When it's clear that he won't, Charles flips their hands over, pushing the coin back into Max’s palm. 

   The penny was always braver than either of them. 

   Max breaks their eye contact to look down, and then slowly rakes his eyes up, lingering at the lower half of Charles’ face before settling back on his eyes. 

   “I want to kiss you.”
