“Percy, take care of yourself, okay?”
Jason’s words were deep and sincere, and also completely unwarranted. Why would he think Percy wasn’t taking care of himself? It’s not like he knew… and Percy had made sure to wear long sleeves…
“No problem, dude. I got it. ‘M fine, we’re fine, evrrrythin’s fine. Catch you later.”
Percy couldn’t escape fast enough. His heart was beating like a rabbit’s, and he could feel the pulsing all over his body. He pushed his sweaty hair away from his forehead, and once he turned a corner, leaned against a wall and tried to slow his breathing.
A part of him felt bad about leaving Jason stranded like a little boy, but he had felt an overwhelming need to escape. Why would Jason think Percy wasn’t taking care of himself? Why would he have any reason to believe a hero of Olympus wasn’t doing okay? Something had slipped up. Somewhere, Percy had been careless, or a subconscious part of him (selfish, hog) wanted somebody to notice, so Jason (sweet, caring, empathetic) had noticed.
