In Every Universe But This One

Work Text:

The rain beat a steady rhythm against the tall windows of the study, but inside, the only sound was the subtle click of a chess piece sliding into place without a hand ever touching it.

Erik didn’t look at the board. His eyes were fixed entirely on Charles.

Charles sat across from him, swathed in the soft wool of his cardigan, a half-empty glass of amber liquid resting near his hand. He looked tired—exhaustingly, beautiful tired. The lines around his eyes seemed deeper than they had six months ago, etched by the burden of a dream that Erik knew was a fantasy, but Charles guarded like sacred scripture.

"You're rushing your king's pawn, Erik”

Charles said softly, his voice a low whisper that cut through the silence like a blade. He reached out with pale, slender fingers and moved a black knight to intercept.

"A rare display of impatience from you."

"I am not impatient, Charles”

Erik replied, his voice deep, resonance vibrating with the faint, invisible hum of metal in the walls around them.

"I am simply tired of waiting for you to see what is right in front of you."

Charles paused, his hand lingering over the board. He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, and Erik felt the gentlest ghost of an impression press against the outer edges of his mind— a habit Charles could never entirely break. It was warmth, cedarwood, and a quiet, desperate longing.

/I see you/ the whisper echoed in Erik’s thoughts before Charles drew back, respecting the boundary Erik’s helmet usually provided, though Erik wasn't wearing it tonight. Tonight, there were no helmets. No brotherhood. No X-Men. Just two men in a room, nursing a fire that was consuming them both.

"I see the world clearly, my friend”

Charles said, looking up, his blue eyes bright with unspilled tears.

"I see a world that is terrified. And I see you, trying to burn it down before it learns to walk."

"They will put us in chains, Charles, They are already forging them”

Erik leaned forward, the sudden movement causing the iron pokers by the fireplace to rattle faintly in their stand. He forced his hands to flatten on the dark mahogany table.

"I have seen where this leads. I have carried the numbers on my arm most of my life. I will not sit by idly and politely ask for my right to exist while they build weapons to exterminate us”

"And slaughtering them will prove what?"

Charles demanded, his voice cracking, the composure slipping to reveal the raw, hemorrhaging wound beneath.

"That we are the monsters they fear we are? If we build our future on a foundation of bones and ashes, Erik, then we have already lost. We become everything you hate."

"I do not care about humanity's judgment!"

Erik snapped. He stood up so fast his chair scraped violently against the floorboards. In two long strides, he was around the table, dropping to one knee beside Charles's wheelchair.

Erik reached out, his hand gripping the armrest, his other hand hesitating before pressing against the side of Charles’s face. His thumb brushed over Charles’s cheekbone, feeling the heat of his skin, the slight tremor in his jaw.

"I care about /us/“

Erik breathed, his voice breaking, dropping all the iron in his cadence until he was just a man begging for the only meaningful thing he had left in the universe.

"I care about /you/. Come with me, Charles. Stop fighting me. Together, we could build a world where no child ever has to hide, where you never have to bleed for people who despise you. Please."

Charles didn't pull away. Instead, he leaned into Erik’s touch, closing his eyes as a single, hot tear escaped and dragged across Erik’s thumb. He raised his own hand, burying his fingers in Erik’s hair, pulling him closer until their foreheads rested against one another.

They breathed the same air. It was an agony of closeness— so near their hearts beat in sync, yet separated by a chasm wider than the ocean.

"You know I can't”

Charles whispered into the tiny space between their lips. The heartbreak in his voice was absolute, a crushing weight that made Erik’s chest physically ache.

"God help me, Erik, I love you. I love you more than my own life. I would give you anything. My mind, my heart, my breath..."

Charles opened his eyes, staring directly into Erik’s soul with a devastating, hopeless clarity.

"...but I cannot give you my dream. I cannot let you kill them."

"Then you choose /them/ over me”

Erik sighed, his hand tightening in Charles's sweater, pulling him closer as if he could physically drag Charles into his conviction, as if he could weld their souls together by sheer force of will.

"No”

Charles sobbed quietly, pressing a soft, desperate, lingering kiss against Erik’s lips— a kiss that tasted of scotch, salt, and the finality of a tragedy already written.

"I am choosing /us/. The version of us that could have been good."

When Charles pulled back, the silence in the room returned, heavier than lead.

Erik stayed on his knee for a long moment, feeling the phantom touch of Charles's telepathy wrapping around him like a tragic embrace— a silent /don't go/ whispered by a heart that knew he had to. Erik stood up slowly. The metal pieces on the chessboard trembled, then settled.

"Then we will meet on the battlefield, old friend”

Erik said, his voice returning to cold steel, even as his eyes burned with a profound, quiet ruin.

Charles didn't look up as Erik turned and walked toward the heavy oak doors.

"I know”

Charles whispered to the empty room.

"And it will kill us both."
