Chapter 1: The Promise

Chapter Text

The day had been nothing but inconvenience after another, up even until Nene Yashiro had slammed the door behind her and ran faster than she'd thought she had in her whole life. In one arm she held a basket of supplies, In her other arm lie the main problem of her whole day, Black Canyon, her oh so very rowdy sliver Eevee. He had done nothing but spill things, annoy her other Pokémon, and bolt out the front door when she'd opened it. Maybe she could've been more cautious or just put him in his ball, but the ladder option was mean to a Pokémon who hated ever being in! Although she probably just should've been watching him more, that wasn't the point anymore!

The cool summer air hit Nene and ran through her long hair as she ran, the last light of day barely shining through the landscape and buildings. Street lamps were already beginning to turn on, not a good sign for the now sprinting Nene. How the hell could I have let time slip just like that? I'm gonna be so mad if I miss this! Her thoughts scramble to remember the location, going back to the few hung posters that lay about the town,

'DEOXYES SIGHTING NIGHT! COME SEE THIS MYSTICAL EVENT!!'

Black Canyon had begun squirming in her arms but she held him firmly, she can't let another thing happen tonight, she just can't.

_______________

Nene had always had interest in learning about the nature of various Pokémon, habits, personalities, care, biology, she would always go back to researching on her computer later than anyone should be up for. Yet there was always an issue looming its ugly head every time a career in this interest popped into her thoughts, the lack of proper studying programs. The schools here were decent, yes, but if she wanted to truly pursue a professional career in pokemon research, she needed to find a way to leave this region. So for now, all she could do was work small jobs, study what she could find online in her free time, and now, possibly get to see a mythical Pokémon! Obviously there wasn't much research she could do from a few minutes of sight, but anything at this point will make her incredibly happy.

At last she could see the field up ahead, small poles holding up fairy lights in a clearing. Groups would form around the area, some resting on blankets, others enjoying a drink while standing. The smell of small fires was prominent too, likely people and pokemon cooking some meals. In all honesty it was really inviting.

Arriving at the edge of the place, Nene would let Black Canyon go and hunch over quickly after, although not giving up the basket. She'd huff jumbled words of victory from the little breath she had. Black Canyon was simply sitting next to her, staring calmly as if he hadn't caused most of this today, such a rude pokemon!

Taking in her final large breath, Nene stood tall and started over to the area she had mapped out a while before the event, obviously she had to find the highest and most clear sighting spot for this, it's a super rare event!

As she continued around, the sounds of chatting she noticed was mainly around one area, an almost circle of people gathered. There's not even a fire, so what are they crowding? Nene questioned, quickly, before the answer popped itself out of the crowd, literally. There stood two somewhat small figures wiggling their way out of the crowd, turning back but still continuing away. Being the slightly curious person she is, Nene squinted closer at who the people may be, before her jaw kind of dropped at the realization.

Standing out a bit away, stood the two new 7th gym leaders, and region champions, the Yugi twins. Nene could remember when the shocking story spread in her small town, the former older champion, Mr.Yugi, suddenly passing, and leaving the gym to his young sons who were forced with the title and duties. A frown started on her face, it was definitely a position she pitied, but why were the region champions here?

Although there were a lot of questions she had, the sun had already fully set, too close to the sighting window, so her pace picked back up to the hidden hill further back. Just behind her, Black Canyon follows quietly, a bit of bounce in his step.

The spot was even more beautiful at night than Nene could have thought, flora surrounded all around, small flowers decorated it as well. All except the middle opening, leading to one of the most perfect viewing locations for this event. Her lips pulled up in a gleeful smile, giggling slightly as she got to her knees to begin setting her small picnic blanket down.

But just as the blanket was done and Nene prepared to let her other Pokémon out, a small sound of rustling began behind her. Turning quickly, footsteps could also be heard. Now she was freaking out, standing up swiftly.

"Black Canyon, come here!" Nene called to her pokemon.

He'd surprisingly follow her order, going to stand in front of her in a battle position. The air got more and more tense every second they waited, until finally a white snout popped out of the foliage.

From there, a Hisuan Zoroark reached its way out, right next to them, their trainer followed. One of the new crowned champions of the region, Yugi Amane. _________________________________________

The ringing in his ears had continued long after he found his way from the crowd. Amane sighed after reaching a respectable distance, handling a swarm like that was never his strong suit, though his brother loved it. He was actually grateful Tsukasa could talk and talk for anybody, it always helped him get away from those situations.

The once wood smoke ridden air would cave itself to a lovely warm breeze and a smell of grass as he walked further. His Zoroark, Hakujoudai, released themselves from their ball and began to walk shortly behind him, at times looking back to the crowd defensively.

It'd been a while since he'd been here, after taking the champion title, everywhere since it became a hassle to go to. But now that everyone was distracted with his much more extroverted brother, Amane could slip away into the quieter nature. Though he wasn't fully calm yet, there was still a pep in his step and a grin on his face, the prospect of seeing such a rare space Pokémon excited him beyond belief. He'd always had an intrigue with Pokémon from places not of their world. Learning about them was always a pain due to how little is known about them, but the topic always made him giddy regardless.

_______________

Just as he arrived at a small hidden spot he knew of, a girl's squeal followed when Hakujoudai popped their head into the small clearing. Forwarding a bit faster, Amane would brush past the final branches as his gaze fell upon a trainer and pokemon. The trainer, likely the one to have squealed, was wearing a slightly baggy Alola graphic shirt, with a pair of shorts. Her blonde blonde hair with seaform green tips were tied half-hazardly into a braid, adorned with two hairclips on either side. The Pokémon near her side was a beautiful shiny Eevee, a collar wrapped around with a skull on it. A final thing he had noticed was her ankles, it wasn't in a mean way, but she definitely had thick ankles. Before Amane could continue a likely too long stare at this stranger, she'd let out a bit of a peep as she spoke.

"What's a someone like you doing here?" Her mouth was slightly agape and eyes a bit wide, maybe not fearful but definitely surprised.

"Oh! Sorry to intrude," he'd quickly nod and averted his gaze, "I can go if you're- uh- having a alone watch or something.." Dammit Yugi! You're being all weird with a girl alone, don't seem like some weirdo! He'd repeatedly wack himself mentally.

"Ah no it's fine! I just never really thought someone of your status would be at a place like this, you know?" Nene waved both her hands in a dismissive manner, though she appreciated the offer.

"Okay, either way sorry again for invading the space though, I just wanted to find a place with good viewing and without that loud crowd.." Amane scratched the back of his neck nervously, but went to sit a bit away from the stranger with his Zoroark eventually.

Nene, more relaxed now, went back to sit on her blanket, letting her bounsweet out of her ball. Bounsweet would come to settle on her side just like Black Canyon had now done. The atmosphere was quieter, but the boy sitting just to her right still made her want to converse, so she did.

"So what are you doing out here?" Nene's head tilted to meet the boy's figure, he was remaining in a knee to chest sitting, arms wrapped around with his Zoroark on his right. Yugi was wearing a grey hoodie, without any visible design from his sitting position. He also wore some black baggy athletic shorts, it was pretty lowkey for a champions outfit.

"Just wanted to see Deoxyes like everyone else, that's the point of being here tonight, no?" Okay now you just sound like some stuck up nerd aughh! There is no coming back now.

"Yeah, that's fair, sorry for asking a stupid question." Nene looked a bit bummed, he definitely was closed off. She'd shift back slightly.

"Sorry for that, let me rephrase, I'm specifically out here because I can see a space Pokémon." His voice perked up a little at the end with a glissen in his eyes.

"Cool! I'm just here to see a rare Pokémon, a bit less specific but this'll still be fun!" Nene would glance a smile over to him, as he returned a small grin, things are looking up!

"Whats your name by the way? I should've asked sooner," Amane glanced back over, warmer in his tone.

"Yashiro Nene! And my Eevees name is Black Canyon!" Her tone too got warmer and happier, "And you're Amane Yugi, right?"

"Yes I am," Amane's smile grew a bit with every word, "My Zoroark over here is named Hakujoudai."

"Where is your brother though? I'd kind of expect twins to be near one another more often than not." Nene tilted her head a tad.

"He got sucked into the crowd down there, took the whole strength of Arceus to get him out!" Amane giggled a bit at his own stupid joke, not even realizing his hands had sprung out to express himself further. Nene would giggle with him, that's good, right?

"That makes sense, well, it's nice to know someone enjoys these quiet spots just as I do!" Neither of them were being too loud, just enough for the other to hear their excitement.

"Why don't you come over here so we can talk quieter? The sighting will start soon, and I don't want others to be alerted here." Nene looked over and patted to the other side of her blanket, a kind gesture.

Amane, taken aback slightly, nodded quietly and shifted over with his Zoroark, coming to sit at a comfortable distance from Yashiro.

After that, they began conversing about random Pokémon and daily life things, their struggles of getting here, how nice the weather was, easy small talk for people getting to know one another. But then a conversation finally emerged that hit the two like a fret train.

"So, do you enjoy being champion?" A simple enough question Nene asked.

Amane stared up into the now white speckled sky, taking a moment to think about his next few words.

"Not really, Tsukasa can handle the people, but he's rarely wanting to upkeep the other duties," his head moved back into the shield of his arms wrapped around him, "Honestly I didn't want to stay in this region, studying space Pokémon in another region was always want I wanted to do.." Bit much of dump onto Nene he realized quickly after.

"I didn't know about that, I'm sorry.." neither spoke for a good amount of time, letting the buzzing of nearby Nincadas and the quiet wind take over their minds. The pair would look up into the sky, not quite sure what to say.

"...I've always wanted to leave this region too," Nene finally said, "Not to just some nearby big shot region like Jhoto, something further, all new biodiversity." A smaller grin emerges from Nene as they both continue to stare upwards.

Nene knew she shouldn't pry further, but she continued, "What would you need to do for you to stop being champion?"

Amane hesitated once more, finally speaking, "For a champion to quit here, they need to battle the other 6 gym leaders as a final proof of strength. Getting kicked off champion rank by losing to another trainer is much more common though--but people frown on the loser heavily." Amane's tone was much more somber. He felt he'd have to accept sooner or later he likely wouldn't be able to leave this region until he's an adult. The all familiar guilt followed him when he thought about it more, wanting to leave such a sentimental place had always brought some shame to him.

Nene hadn't spoken, and she continued to not speak even after Amane was finished talking. Another agonizing pause fell on the two. Finally, Nene broke the slice again, with a quieter voice.

"How about we achieve our goal together?" Nene asked bluntly.

"You think we could do that?" Amane's eyes widened.

Just as Nene was about to carry on the new topic, an orange and cyan blob blitz across the sky, Deoxyes!

Both halted any thoughts or conversations, amazed by the sight of this Pokémon. It moved fast, but slow enough people and Pokémon could gasp in awe of seeing it clearly. The beauty of the sky complimented the just as beautiful creature, it almost seemed to dance with the stars, the light of the moon highlighting it clearly.

It was truly a breathtaking moment, two young trainers sitting in absolute astonishment not just about the Pokémon, but maybe their future prospects that their encounter has brought. Maybe, just maybe, they could reach their goals with the help from the other.

Maybe, no, hopefully, absolutely.

In one fast moment after about 5 minutes of staring, Deoxyes would make a just as swift exit. Clapping could be heard from everyone down the hill, cheering, appreciation.

The two people on the hill, however, remained silent. Their brains were still catching them up with what had happened. But finally both would turn, a smile bright as the iridescent moon.

Nene's smile slowly shifted into a calmer grin, "genuinely I think we could do it together, I mean, why not?" A small chuckle escaped her mouth, turning to look at him in his bright tangerine eyes.

Amane, still slightly lagging in his mind, caught up in a minute to quickly stare, his smile had dropped into a mix of shock and joy.

"Sure." He quite literally couldn't think to say anything else, just staring as she would.

"Then let's fully agree to it! In 2 days we'll meet at the train station so you can fight the leaders, and I can continue to do field research with pokemon!" Her smile could light up any day for Amane now, a sudden burst of hope and determination flowed through him.

"Okay!" His face quickly showed a large smile again now too.

Nene would lift her hand up, pinky finger reaching out for its new companion. Amane lifts his hand up, meeting hers into a pinkie promise.

"Let's do it.”
