Work Text:
veronica sits alone at a lunch table, eating a Pb&j sandwich.
it was her first day at a new school after that whole thing with JD.
she tries her best to ignore the memories as she eats her sandwich.
'new school, new people, new start. i can do it right this time.' veronica thinks to herself.
her thoughts are brought to an end as a girl sits down across from her.
she has long blond hair, and dark green eyes.
"hello!" the girl says, setting her lunch tray down.
veronica stares at her for a moment, then speaks.
"hi, can i help you?" veronica asks, eyeing the girl across from her up and down.
"no, my other friends were out today, and you're new here so i figured I'd talk to you. im Karen by the way." Karen says, picking up a French fry from her tray and popping it into her mouth.
"oh well, im veronica, nice to meet you, i guess." veronica mutters, taking another bite of her sandwich.
"so why'd you move here?" Karen asks, looking up at veronica.
veronica tenses up, and she keeps her gaze on the table.
"i…. got bullied really bad at my old school and had to be pulled out." veronica replies. technically true, she did get bullied.
sure it wasn't bad enough to get pulled out but veronica didn't want to share her life story on the first day.
"that sounds rough. I've never been bullied before." Karen says, pausing for a moment then muttering "at least i don't think so."
veronica eyes drift back to Karen, the blond smiling happily.
"are you always so happy?" veronica asks, her gaze focused on Karen's smile.
Karen lets out a small laugh then replies with "not always, just most of the time. you should try it."
veronica cracks a small smile.
"maybe i will. so, what about your other friends, are they as happy as you?" veronica asks, putting her arms down on the table.
"well, Gretchen is usually happy, unless Regina isn't happy with her, and Regina is" she pauses thinking for a moment, then she starts again "Regina is complected. you should sit with us tomorrow, I'd love for you to meet them!"
veronica thinks for a moment, then gives a small nod and says "sure. I'll join you tomorrow.
Karens face lights up.
"great. im sure you'll love them." Karen says, eating another fry.
the two spend the rest of lunch talking.
they split ways when the bell rings going to separate classes.
throughout the rest of the day Veronica's mind is filled with thoughts about tomorrow.
she prays that Karen's friends are at least a bit nice.
the next day, when they're at lunch veronica walks into the cafetiere, her eyes scanning the room, looking for the girl she ate lunch with yesterday.
she spots Karen sitting with two other girls.
one also blond and the other brunette.
"oh god, this is gonna be just like the heathers, wont it." veronica mutters to herself.
she walks over to the table and sits down next to Karen.
"hey, veronica. glad you made it!" Karen cheerfully says, a bright smile painted on her face.
"veronica, this is Regina, and Gretchen." Karen says, putting her hand on Veronica's shoulder.
"so, this is veronica? is she as stupid as you?" Regina asks, her gaze focused on veronica.
"i don't think so. i didn't ask." Karen says, then turns to veronica.
"are you stupid?" Karen asks.
before veronica can respond Gretchen speaks.
"Karen! you cant just ask people if they're stupid." Gretchen says, quickly shutting down Karens question.
"so, why did you move here exactly?" Regina asks her eyes still focused on veronica.
veronica tries to not let the discomfort show on her face as she speaks.
"i got bullied, and my parents pulled me out." veronica shares the same lie.
"what'd you get bullied for?" Gretchen asks, while fidgeting with a plastic fork.
Veronica's palms sweat as she tries her best to not look nervous.
"a lot of different things." veronica mutters, another half truth.
"well, im sure you'll fit in fine here." Regina says, pecking at her salad.
"did Karen already tell you the rules?" Gretchen asks, looking directly at veronica.
"like, the schools rules?" veronica asks, having not been told about the plastics rules.
Regina lets out a small laugh.
"no, our rules." Regina says, still glaring at veronica.
"you can only have your hair in a ponytail once a week, you can only wear sweat pants on Fridays, and you cant wear a tank top two days in a row. if you break them, you can't sit with us" Gretchen lists off the rules.
Karen quickly cuts in with "and we wear pink on Wednesdays!"
"i don't like the color pink though." veronica says.
"well, we can make an exception for you, right guys?" Karen asks, turning her head and facing the other plastics.
"I'll think about it." Regina mutters, her eyes haven't left veronica this whole time.
"would you two mind if we had a moment. I'd like to talk to Karen.
Gretchen nods, and gets up, veronica follows.
the two stand off to the side as Karen and Regina talk.
"so, you see any boys you like yet?" Gretchen asks, ignoring the uncomfortable look on Veronica's face.
"no, I'm pretty sure I'll just focus on school this year." veronica replies, she really didn't even want to think about romance at all.
before Gretchen can speak Regina calls to them.
"okay, you two can come back." Regina says.
the two go back to the table, sitting back down.
"So what'd you talk about?" Gretchen asks, her eyes on Regina.
Regina glances at Veronica, then back at Gretchen.
"I'll tell you later." Regina says, going back to pecking at her salad.
"so, veronica, was it, how are you liking northshore so far?" Regina asks, her attention turning back to veronica.
"its nice, the classes are easy, and people are nice." veronica says, no one has really talked to her besides Karen in the two days she was in the school, so she didn't really have a solid opinion on anyone but the people seem fine.
"that's nice. well, just know there are some weirdos here, so just make sure to avoid them." Regina says, her eyes down at the table.
the four eat lunch together, Regina doing most of the talking, then the bell rings.
"well, I'll see you guys later." Regina says, pushing herself up from the table.
"okay, I'll get to class too." Gretchen says, also standing up from the table.
the two leave, leaving veronica and Karen alone at the table.
"hey, veronica, would you mind if we had a small chat?" Karen asks, earning a nod from veronica.
"sure, do you wanna like, meet somewhere or just talk here?" veronica asks, getting a tad nervous at that, when someone asks that its never usually good.
"meet me in the bathroom. that's usually where me and the others talk." Karen mutters, while getting up from the table.
"okay, well I'll meet you there." veronica says, her voice making it clear that she's a bit nervous.
they leave the cafetiere.
Karen stands in the girls bathroom, waiting for veronica.
"gosh, i hope she isn't bailing on me." Karen mutters, as she leans against the wall.
she stands there for another minute before muttering again.
"i probably should've told her which bathroom i was talking about."
just as Karen mutters that veronica walks into the bathroom.
"hey, sorry for the wait, i got lost on my way over." veronica says, walking closer to Karen.
"so what'd you want to talk about?" veronica asks, still nervous about whatever she's about to hear.
"i wanted to ask you something." Karen says, glancing at the floor for a moment then looks back up at veronica.
"do you like girls?" Karen asks.
the question takes veronica aback, but the shock wears off quickly.
"i mean, yeah, but i also like guys, why?" veronica responds, somehow being more nervous then before.
"okay, Regina wanted to know." Karen says, pausing for a moment then continuing with another question "how'd you know you? like did you just feel it or did something happen?"
veronica thinks for a moment then responds.
"well, i made out with a girl at a sleepover one time and that kinda woke something in me." veronica says, recalling her first sleepover with the heathers. she had made out with heather chandler because of a dare. she wasn't sure if chandler enjoyed it but it didn't really matter now.
mainly because chandler was dead, but also because veronica had moved.
"would you ever do it again?" Karen asks, a slight blush creeping onto her face.
"probably, why do you ask?" veronica asks, noticing the blush on the other girls face.
"i wanna know, would you do it with me?" Karen asks, her hands gripping the edge of her shirt.
veronica eyes her up a down, then mutters a quick "yeah, probably."
Karen smiles at the words.
"would you do it right now?" she asks, taking a step forward, getting closer to veronica.
"if you wanted, sure." veronica says putting her hands on Karens shoulder.
Karen slides one of her hands up, resting it on the side of veronica head, her fingers running through Veronica's hair.
"well, i do want." Karen says, leaning in and pressing her lips against Veronica's.
veronica leans into the kiss immediately, deepening the kiss as she does, her arms wrapping around Karen's waist.
before the two can do anything else they are interrupted.
"Jesus Christ, i said ask her if she liked girls, not test it." Regina's voice cuts through the room.
veronica jumping slighting, and turning to face her.
"well, you didn't say i couldn't." Karen says, lowering her hands.
"you couldn't wait 'til school was done to test it? or at least in a stall?" Regina asks, glaring at veronica in disgust.
"wheres the fun in that." veronica says sarcastically, earning a scowl from Regina.
"whatever. you two just" she pauses, her eyes darting between the two of them, then she continues "just get out of here."
Regina walks into one of the stalls, shutting the door and locking it.
"so, uh you wanna continue this later? y'know, after school." veronica asks, still sweating slightly.
Karen lets out a small chuckle, then speaks again.
"sure, can't wait." Karen says, placing a kiss on Veronica's cheek, then exiting the bathroom.
"wow, maybe i can focus on school and dating. hopefully she's not a murderer." veronica mutters, then exits the bathroom, getting to class.
