Chapter Text
The Forgers Cracked Foundation
Chapter One
Anya Forger tried to keep her enthusiasm as she finished school after saying goodbye to her best friend Becky Blackbell.
It was the weekend, and two days away from Eden, however, Anya Forger just stared at the ground and wanted to cry.
These were the few moments, even days, and she had the habit of counting down, so the moment arrived when all her powers returned, like a sudden rush of air, when she opened a door, was how Anya could only describe it.
For the next three days, Anya was powerless, and these were the moments when she could feel the most normal. Especially in a world like Eden, where she was treated as anything but.
In truth, after being at Eden, reading the minds of those who thought she was a tiny, feral savage, having never been to school or had a decent education.
Hiding the fact that she was really five years old, she knew even if she was unaware of her birthday, so maybe she was six after all.
Anya struggled to put into words how she felt, since no one would understand, and now her powers had evaporated, as she was studying for the test.
Normally, Anya didn’t mind this, it was rare that she could use her powers to cheat, since “Cheaters never prosper”
Well, according to her parents, though Anya knew that her parents were a spy and assassin respectively, so they were prospering, and both liars.
Then again, Anya wondered if her not informing them about her powers was also lying, or just her not telling the truth?
Anya was confused by the entire thing, and at her core, just exhausted with everything, as she looked out of the window and saw some children, her age, coming out of a normal Berlint Comprehensive.
Some looking worse for wear, some with paint on their clothes, and most of them looking happy. But Anya, Anya was at Eden Academy, an Elite Private School, where she had to always look her best.
Anya looked a little bit longer at a little girl, about her age, with paint all over her jumper, and she was running to her mother, with no care in the world.
Anya envied that little girl.
Only a week earlier, after school, Anya had been with Loid and Yor at the local library, both the ladies getting some books out. Loid because he was doing some intel on a mission Anya was not meant to know about, when she had seen a class for music, dancing and painting.
“Papa, papa, can I go?” Anya hopped up and down at the thought of doing her favourite things, and with people her own age too, as the women running the classes smiled at Anya’s enthusiasm.
“She’s more than welcome to join. It’s a two-hour class, and you can do one of the three. Our painting class is very popular, but there are a few slots”.
Yor was about to agree, but Papa shook his head. “I’m afraid Anya doesn’t have the time for it; she needs to study more”.
Causing Anya to stop jumping and look crestfallen, as she read the rest in Loid’s thoughts
“Anya needs to spend more time with the Eden students, Operation Strix is more important”
That was it, Operation Strix was more important than anything, including Anya.
Anya was exhausted by the rules, the regulations, the studying.
Anya hated studying, in the lab, she was studied and had to study, being “Subject 007”.
A quiver of fear went through Anya’s small body at the moment, of flowing lunar cycles, and that little bit extra when her powers went away, just in anticipation of when they would return.
Anya felt her eyes begin to water and bit back the tears. That’s what her papa would do to her, send her to another lab. A spy with a telepath daughter, she knew Papa would be unstoppable, and then Papa would stop loving her and use her, just like they did.
Anya had never told her papa that when she saw him in his white coat, she found him scary, or why she thought his doctor's office was a laboratory, not what looked like a nice office.
Anya felt stupid, but was smart enough to know she was being used by Loid, or Twilight…of whatever her Papa’s real name was.
Anya was beginning to wonder if Loid even remembered his real name, and Anya wondered how he would feel when he found out her real name wasn’t Anya!
Anya's mind was in such confusion, and it had all started in the exam, which she had worked so hard for, studying for hours, just what Loid wanted.
But not what Anya wanted…
Anya sniffed back the tears and just looked out of the window of the country they were trying to save for “World Peace”. If that was her job, Anya was a failure.
Normally, taking a test without the constant bombardment of other people's fears and anxieties on top of her own was easier, but not like this one.
Anya looked at the papers, filled everything in, but remembered nothing about it. Like she was on autopilot, or just dumb, and her stomach twisted, as she knew Loid would be mad at her.
Anya didn't need to read his mind to see the disapproving look, and the promise to “Do better”.
“Do better…or what?” Anya murmured, more to herself, and her stomach twisted again.
“Do better, or Papa will send you back”.
It was a crushing reality. But Anya wondered if Loid would do that, one more Tonitus Bolt, one more low exam, and she would be gone, and Operation Strix would continue, with another child.
Anya wondered how it would be done. Would he just drop Anya off and pick a new child?
Anya could never forget how he had even chosen her, the little games in his head, as Anya stood on her tiptoes and did a crossword puzzle to get him to adopt her. But Loid said, “I’ll take her”
That bothered Anya more than she wanted to admit, that she was a means to an end. Loid would just get rid of her. Got so easily and then thrown away even easier.
The Eden school bus was chaotic, so no one noticed the silent tears drifting down Anya’s face as it pulled up to 128 Park Avenue, their second address, because Anya was playing with Papa’s spy equipment and got herself abducted.
Anya thought being a spy would be cool, but she would never tell Papa how she felt at times having the target on her back if everyone knew about her, and Mama and Papa, then they would get rid of her.
Anya had heard the word “compromised” in both her parents' heads and didn't understand it, but knew it was bad.
Anya just being Anya had already compromised “Operation Strix”, and World Peace was apparently depending on her.
Anya just didn’t know how, and how could she ask her Papa, “How does your six-year-old, having a Playdate, lead to World Peace?”
Anya’s heart felt heavy, since she didn’t even like Damian that much, he was a bully and called her legs stubby even though she really was a good year younger than him.
Damian was just rude, but every time she investigated his mind, he loved his father, but there was no love there.
Anya didn't want to go to Damian’s house at all. It was huge, with lots of servants, but Anya had seldom seen Damian's family in his mind, and wondered if they were robots!
A shiver went through Anya's body at the thought, and her stomach clenched, but she had to do everything in her power to go to “Syon Boys” home, even though she knew her Papa had a machine to change his face. And wondered why it was on her, when he could just do that.
Anya knew she was being used, and that hurt her the most. Even Yor, who was using her to maintain a sense of looking like a normal family, so the SS would not get involved. And Anya knew a slight slip-up would expose all of them, but she was not meant to know this information,
There were many things Anya was not meant to know, and she sniffed back the tears from the chaos in my mind, which was something else, since this time of the month she was normally happy. Happy Anya, always cheerful, always loving, just in case on that day, she wasn't.
Now at her destination, it was a clear sunny day, but it didn’t match her mood, as she thanked the driver, masking her face perfectly.
Since he was a driver for an elite school and had seen everything regarding the emotions of children, Anya tugged herself up the stairs to the apartment where she lived with her fake parents.
For once, she didn’t do her cheery announcement. Powered or not, there was no one there. She noticed that Bond and his lead were not there. One of the few times, now she couldn’t read Bond’s future, but she knew it was a bad one.
She didn’t need Bond to tell her that anyway.
Dropping her bag, which was expensive, since Papa never stopped mentioning that it was, onto the floor. Anya kicked off her also very expensive shoes and trudged herself to her bedroom.
She wanted to feel better, but she was so bad, so stupid, she studied, and it never sank in, not even when she was in the orphanage or in the labs.
Anya shivered once more as she remembered the labs, wondering if they found her, would she be returned? Maybe she should tell her Papa.
So, he would be forced to keep her for longer. She would be a good spy. She didn’t want to be anything, so that he didn’t get rid of her.
Anya’s mind was so overwhelmed by the test that she was sure she had failed Operation Strix and all the secrets, and she was only five years old.
She was five, she wanted to scream it from the rooftops that she was just a liar, just like her parents.
But instead, Anya repressed her feelings, as she climbed into bed fully clothed, threw her blanket over her head, curled herself into a ball, and just began to cry.
