Egg flinches when a pair of sandals hits his face.
Looking up, he finds Wemmbu dressed to go out. “Yo, let’s go to the beach.”
“Ouch, bro, you hit me in my one singular eyeball.” He looks back down at the sandals. “Are these yours? They stink.”
“Nah, you don’t understand. It’s my aura.”
“Yeah, green aura with flies.”
“Dalright…”
“It’s really hot today,” Wifies says while looking out the window, sitting on Parrot’s sofa. Parrot always complains about the crappy AC system that his mom hasn’t bothered to fix.
“We should get ice cream,” Parrot suggests. Wifies can barely hear his friend over the rumbling of their crusty air conditioning.
“It’s way too hot to walk outside right now.”
“Then let’s take the bus, bro. Plus, the AC inside there is probably way better.”
The moment they walk out the door, heat only seems to get worse outside.
…Maybe the ac had actually been doing better than they thought.
Parrot, while sweating, is at least doing better as a tropical macaw hybrid. Wifies, however, is certainly not as well-built for the heat. He was always a winter person, anyways. The bus stop’s hooded bench at least provides the two some shade as they wait for the next bus.
Scrolling on his phone, a local post grabs his attention. “You know, there’s a carnival event at the beach. The beach is only a minute walk from the ice cream store. We can go after.”
Parrot shrugs. “Lowkey, I only have, like, 6 dollars to my name right now.”
“It’s fine, I can pay for whatever. You know I can’t spend all of my allowance myself.”
Before Parrot can protest, the bus pulls up in front of them.
“Don’t worry about it. You were the one who suggested we go out, right?”
Parrot laughs, voice soft like always. “Yeah, I guess.”
“Yooo what’s up guys!?” Not this guy again. “Whatcha doing? You wouldn’t mind if I tag along right—”
The both of them were just about to enter the subway when the town’s local green ragebaiter stopped by.
“Yeahh, c'mon Egg. Let’s just skedaddle.”
“Waitt guys, we can talk about this! Please bro let me tag along, we’re best buddies, right???” Boosfer pleads. Behind him in the distance is a group of guys running around the area, looking for a certain green someone.
Wemmbu hears Egg jokingly muttering beside him. “Bro already made enemies in the first week of summer.”
“Nah.” Wemmbu grabs Egg’s wrist and runs across the station into the train. Among the crowd, he’s sure they’ve lost him until the very same voice they tried to lose speaks behind them.
“Wow, thanks guys! I almost got jumped! 😂”
“Bro managed to follow us all the way here, maybe we should actually consider his request to tag along, Wemmbu.”
“Okay bro, how about no. This guy is the number 1 worst person to be around, in case you didn’t know.” Wemmbu turns back to Boosfer, “And what do you mean you almost got jumped?”
“… Let’s just say that group caught me ‘borrowing’ their stuff the other day.”
Wemmbu groans. “Do whatever you want, but me and Egg are not helping your ahh if you get jumped again.”
After enduring the train ride with the most insufferable guy Wemmbu has ever met, the trio step onto the platform, figuring out where to go next (though, it was mostly Egg figuring out what to do while Wemmbu and Boosfer wander around).
Wemmbu points at an advertising poster plastered onto the wall. “Look, there’s a carnival going on at the beach.”
Egg completely misses the poster, looking around in confusion. “Bro, what? Where?”
“Brother, it’s literally right there.” Wemmbu nudges him closer. “For someone who has a literal giant eyeball for a head, you somehow have worse eyesight than me.”
“Bro’s prescription is prolly gonna be -6 or 7… SIX SEVENN—”
Wemmbu groans inwardly, wishing that Boosfer had actually gotten jumped at the first stop. “Do you only exist for the purpose of torturing everyone?”
They head up the stairs, Boosfer running ahead, only to turn and stand in the sunlight. “Yo guys, look at my aura, dazzling your peasant eyes.”
Egg decides to indulge him, much to Wemmbu’s displeasement.
“Bro, Boosfer, your aura is so much more auraful than Wemmbu’s green stinky aura that attracts nothing but flies.”
“Me with green aura? Boosfer literally is green.”
“Does bro want purple aura or sum’? I’m sorry brotha, god blessed you with green aura instead.”
Distracted by their bickering, Wemmbu walks straight into a pair of boys holding
ice cream cones, spilling it all on the ground.
“Yo—Parrot?”
“Wemmbu? Dude, what are you doing here?”
“Me? What are you doing here?”
“I was just going with Wifies to a beach festival, but now I guess we’ll be going back to get more ice cream,” Parrot says. The last few words sounded spiteful.
“What’re you getting mad at me for? If you were looking where you were going, you wouldn’t have bumped into me either.”
“Yo chill, let's calm down in the name of Boosfers golden aura. I can buy ice cream as compensation, so let's just get along.”
Wifies joins in the conversation. “It’s alright, I can get me and Parrot more ice cream. There’s no need.”
“Nah bro, I insist. It’s Wemmbu’s fault for not looking where he was going anyway, right Wemmbu?”
“Dalright bro, can we just get going already? I don’t wanna stick around these chungies all day.”
“Yeah bro, we’ve been standing around for like, six or seven minutes already.”
“Shut up Boosfer,” Wemmbu and Parrot collectively say.
Everyone is gathered around a patio table outside the shop. Parrot and Wifies have gotten their snacks paid for, but Egg suggested he and Wemmbu could also have ice cream now that they’re here.
While the four of them make conversation, Parrot notices Boosfer eyeing the front entrance.
“What are you looking at?”
The purple demon turns next, watching as a familiar group of people in the distance approach the patio. “Aren’t those the guys that were looking for you?”
Chuckling anxiously, Boosfer shuffles off the table. “Yeah, you know, I think it’s about time I go now.” As he scurries away, he yells, “thanks for the free ice cream, by the way!”
“What is he—” Parrot glances at their table to find their cones snatched. “Oh my god bro, this kid…”
“This kinda stunt is literally why bro gets jumped every 2 seconds.” Wemmbu mutters.
Once they’ve—once again—ordered their ice cream, the four begin their walk to the beach, eating their snacks on the way to the carnival.
The event itself isn’t anything spectacular. If anything, Parrot was sure they were wasting money on overpriced food and rigged minigames. Even so, this place still brings a bit of fun thanks to having friends with him.
For now, Parrot bemusedly observes Wemmbu and his attempts to win a basketball shooting game, which proved harder than Wemmbu had initially thought. At some point, he just had to ask himself if these rigged games were worth playing at all; even after Wifies had told him that it’s taller than standard models and the hoop is literally slightly oval-shaped
“Just use your brain, Wemmbu,” Egg teases from beside him after he tosses his last ball.
“Why don’t you try these impossible rigged games?”
“This might be above the powers of the all seeing eye, but you got that, right bro?”
“You know what? I’m just gonna threaten to blow this place up if this guy doesn’t gimme all his prizes.”
“Bro is actually the biggest menace known to man.”
Wemmbu’s threatening tactics actually turned out to be top tier, and he had been given plushie prizes that he would probably just throw away. Bored, Wemmbu dragged Eggchan over to a cotton candy stall, buying one for each of them. They walked around, holding the prizes they had basically stolen. They even had Parrot and Wifies carry the remaining amount of prizes that they couldn’t hold.
“We should probably scam someone with these plushies,” Egg said, feeling just as bored as Wemmbu. “I feel my secret scamming side calling to me, bro.”
“Anything to get rid of these plushies, bruh. I’m tired of carrying these around,” Parrot interjects, still irritated that the purple demon made him and Wifies carry everything.
Wemmbu glances somewhere behind Egg. “—And I think they just called security on us so let’s get outta here now—”
2 security guards and a staff member pointing to their direction behind them, obviously upset that 2 teens were threatening the carnies.
“Yo, we're definitely getting banned from this place, aren’t we?”
“Just run,” Wemmbu grabs Egg’s wrist to drag him away for what felt like the nth time that day, laughing despite being chased around the area.
Wemmbu feels Egg release his hand. “Wait—give me a minute,” he says in between breaths.
“Are you that tired?”
“Yeah bro, we’ve been running for ages. I think we lost them already.”
Footsteps crackle against the gravel path. For a second, Wemmbu prepares to dash off until he realizes it’s just Parrot and Wifies running after them, awkwardly carrying the bags of plushies. “Dude, you literally left us there!”
“Why would security be after you guys?”
“Well we were the ones holding most of the stolen prizes.”
“Right—” Wemmbu cracks a laugh. “And you guys are still holding onto them?”
“I wanted to keep the big purple fish squishy,” Wifies says, red from embarrassment.
By the time they left the carnival, it was getting dark. Wemmbu and Egg wave off Parrot and Wifies, who decide to spend the rest of the night themselves on another part of the beach.
Once their goodbyes are said, Wemmbu points to an empty spot to view the ocean. Egg puts his bag down to spread a large picnic blanket, worn out from years of use.
Wemmbu continues to watch the sea which, for some reason, had an odd but beautiful blue glow. He wonders why. Obviously, his nerd best friend Eggchan would know why, right?
“Yo Egg, why’s the sea glowing?”
…
“Egg?”
Wemmbu turns around to find his best friend crouched on the blanket, digging in his bag for a book.
“Wait, I read about this earlier; it’s because of bioluminescent algae bro.”
“Hold on, were you lugging these thick textbooks around the entire day? Dude, if it was this heavy you could’ve just asked me to hold the bag.”
Wemmbu joins Egg in the sand, tidying up the last of the books and gently straightening stray sheets of paper. Anyone who didn’t know Wemmbu personally would think it was unusual, a reckless person like him being cautious about some paper. But he knows how much Egg’s studies mean to him, so he can’t help but be careful.
Egg snickers. “How could anyone find you as ‘strong scary Wemmbu’,” he says, playful. “When you care so much as to not even crinkle my papers.”
“What? So I can’t be nice for once?” The demon bites back. He attempts to put on an annoyed face, yet his grin doesn’t disappear.
Once all their jokes die down, the atmosphere dissolves into something quieter. Not an uncomfortable silence, just the kind of silence that’s calm enough to let one wind down after a fun day.
He tugs at Wemmbu’s loose hair tie, barely holding up a ponytail. “All this sand is sticking into your hair.”
Without a brush, he settles to run his fingers down the other’s long hair, careful not to pull too hard at the tangles.
Once the seraphim finishes brushing, he ties the hair back in a neat ponytail before laying beside his friend on the picnic blanket.
The serene silence is broken when Egg checks his phone and, “Oh snap, it’s like 2 hours past my curfew. I might be cooked bro—”
Wifies and Parrot find their own place to sit by the beach. It’s much cooler now, a stark contrast to the hot sun that had been wearing them down all morning. The night sky is now filled with stars, the moon shining down on the bright illuminated sea.
As gentle sea breezes wash over them, Parrot leans over and grabs a handful of sand, feeling the weathered down grain slip past his fingers. He’d been a little hesitant about going to this place, but it was Wifies who told him not to worry and paid for everything anyway, just so they could have fun. Parrot doesn’t thank Wifies enough.
“Wifies, I’ve never really got a chance to say this, but… thank you for being my friend.”
He smiles gently before responding, “Anytime, dude.”
The entire day had been chaotic, but among everything that went wrong, they’re glad they could spend the day with their best friends.
( I guess the true Unstable was the friends we made along the way… (˶ᵔヮᵔ˶) )
