You decided that for Basch's birthday, you would bake him an erdbeerroulade, or to simplify it, a strawberry swiss roll cake. You haven't made one before, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a try..
You aren't the best at cooking, and you don't have the best history of making things like brownies, but since a swiss roll cake is far more different than brownies, you'd give it a shot.
While Basch was away doing something, you went out and grabbed the ingredients you'd need. You made a list so you wouldn't forget the things needed, and as labeled, the list read:
- eggs
- sugar
- lemon zest
- flour
- whipped cream
- vanilla extract
- strawberries
- strawberry jam
Once you grabbed everything and bought it, you walked home with a soft grin on your face. You couldn't wait to see his reaction when it's done, if it turns out well..
Once you got home, you greeted him before getting to baking. You didn't really keep it a secret from Basch that you were baking him something, he just doesn't know what you were baking.
You started off with the sponge cake by preheating the oven to 200⁰ Celsius. You grabbed a baking sheet and lined it with parchment paper, and once you were done with that, you moved off to the side to start making the actual cake instead of just preparing. After you mixed everything together to make the sponge cake, you spread a decently large rectangle on the baking sheet and put it in the oven. You accidentally left it in for a minute or two too long, but it should be alright..right?
You took the cake out of the oven, and that was when Basch tapped you on your shoulder. "Do you need any help? I really do know how to make these.." he murmured in a soft tone. He never really spoke in a soft tone to people unless it was to you or to his sister.
"Ah, no..I don't need any help. I want this to be for your birthday, so I don't want you lifting a finger, 'kay?" You responded with confidence. His eyebrows furrowed for a moment before letting out a sigh. He wasn't going to push, so he just walked out the kitchen and let you do your thing.
While you thought about it, it would be a nice moment to call Erika, or Basch's sister. Almost as soon as the call started, she had picked up. "Hello? Why the sudden call, ___?" She inquired with a concerned tone.
"Oh, no reason, I just wanted to call you while I make this cake for Basch. I've hardly talked to anyone else today anyways." You said with a small smile as you rolled up the sponge cake with the parchment paper. Erika let out a small 'Hm.' that could barely be audible.
"I'm making him a swiss roll cake, in case you were wondering." You stated, your smile getting a little bigger at the thought of Basch's reaction to the cake you're making him.
"Oh, those? He likes those. I remember him talking about wanting one a couple days ago, so you picked just the right kind of dessert for his birthday!"
As you two talked, you made the filling for the cake. You whipped the cream, sugar, and vanilla until is was stiff. You added in some of the strawberries, and now the filling was done! That was easy.
You grabbed the sponge cake and unrolled it, and put a thin layer of strawberry jam on the inside before putting in the filling, and you rolled it back up tightly. You placed it on a plate and got ready to put the garnish on top.
You had some powdered sugar left over from the last time you tried baking, and you decided to sprinkle some of that on there.
"It's done.." You said with a sigh of relief. Erika cheered on the other side of the phone and congratulated you.
Well, I'm going to go give this to him, and see how he likes it.. Wish me luck.." You stated nervously with a small chuckle to finish off the sentence.
"Good luck! I hope he likes it!" Erika exclaimed before she hung up. You put your phone in your pocket and let out a sigh.
You picked up the plate and walked into another room, but he wasn't in sight. You set the plate down on the coffee table and went to go find him. You peered into the bedroom, and you let out a sigh as you saw him.
You scurried off to go grab the plate, and once you picked it up, you raced to the bedroom to give him the cake.
You opened the door with a creak and he turned his head to look at the door immediately. Your face flushed for a moment as his attention was turned to you.
"Uh..I finished the cake..if you want to go ahead and eat it." You meekly held out the plate that had the swiss roll cake on it and placed it on the nightstand. Basch nodded his head in response as you handed him a fork.
"Happy birthday, Basch!" You exclaimed before practically leaping onto him.
"Uh, thanks.." He muttered awkwardly before patting your back. Once you let go of him, he took a bite of the cake.
"It tastes..hm.." he paused for a moment, "It tastes alright. How did you know I wanted one?"
"I didn't, that's the thing. I just researched what desserts there were, and I chose this, keeping your likes and dislikes in mind, of course."
Basch took another piece from the dessert and offered it to you. "You worked hard to make this..so why not taste your own food?"
You waved your hands in the air dismissively. "I wouldn't dare. It's your birthday, and I made that whole thing just for your consumption.."
"I mean..alright.." He said as he ate the piece he had just offered to you, "If you want some in the future, I can save some for you, if you want."
You actually kind of wanted to try it, so you sheepishly nodded in response. Barely even a few minutes later, you asked for a bite.
"Told you." He said as he cut a small piece off for you and handed you the fork.
You took the fork and took a bite. It was..surprisingly good for your first time making this. You resisted the urge to ask for another piece, since that would seem greedy of you. It's his birthday, I shouldn't be greedy..
It seemed like he already picked up on you continuing to eye down the dessert, and offered another piece. You nodded your head again and he offered another piece. You took it and ate that too. That was, for real, the last piece you'd take.
"You were painfully obvious while eyeing down the cake." Basch said bluntly. You felt a wave of embarrassment as he pointed it out and you immediately let out a string of apologies.
"Sorry, I couldn't help but want another piece..I won't ask for another.."
A small smile cracked through his usually straight face and you felt your own lips curve into a smile of your own.
"It's alright, I don't mind either way."
While Basch was looking away, you took the moment to give him a small peck on the cheek, and he quickly turned his head to face you once more.
"What?" You said with a confident chuckle. However, that was short lived once he leaned back in for another kiss. Once he pulled away, he mouthed a small 'thank you'. You leaned your head on his shoulder while you nodded. Basch continued to eat the erdbeerroulade you made him with a small but soft smile on his face.
