As Linda departs to the bedroom, she says a hushed, “Goodnight, Paul.” He hears it from over his shoulder as he rounds the kitchen and takes the phone from off the wall, flicking on the light as the rest of the house remains dark.
He offers a warm, pleasant, “Hullo,” into the receiver.
“Paul,” comes a distinct and hesitant voice from the other end.
