Out Of Service

Summary:

Wifies didn’t stop contacting Hummer after the Leviathan took him. He didn’t stop his research; he didn’t completely stop what was meant to be his normal schedule.
If anything, all that the Leviathan taking him did was make him more desperate.

He now had something to prove and someone to find.

But how could you find someone who had completely gone off the radar?

OR

All the attempts Wifies made at reaching Hummer after the video.

Work Text:

Wifies didn’t stop emailing him. He had a promise to fulfill, after all. All the searching, all the recordings, all the unique and interesting machines— they weren’t worth anything without Hummer around to believe in them. Okay, seeing it firsthand and all; he hardly believed in the Leviathan to begin with.

How could it so openly betray its most loyal follower? Not only did it betray him, but it betrayed both of them. He’d gone thousands of blocks, hours of recording, researching random posts— solely to separate the two of them.

Ending the email with,
> Yours, Wifies
only felt like a bittersweet end.

It had been over a week since that last email, and sending new ones didn’t help. He’d sent attempts to restore the recordings, crappy things he’d recorded on his phone, anything.

He had to be alive. It was all code in Minecraft, which was masterfully crafted, of course, but code nonetheless. When Hummer drowned, that couldn’t have been the stop to everything.

> I got new footage for you today!
Wifies sent, with it being one empty screenshot next to kelp. He’d learnt to begin taking pictures on his phone, but it wouldn’t work.

The Leviathan was a cruel joke made to taunt him.

> Saw a report that reminded me of you.
It was some crappy TikTok video that didn’t remind him of Hummer at all. He’d begun bullshitting after the first three emails with detailed information, even replicas of the builds that he’d paid people to create.

What was another seventy-five dollars?
What was another hundred dollars?
What was any of it?

He’d been messaging builders drawings more similar to scribbles than any form of architecture, cracking jokes about, “Ah, I’m just not an artist,” and trying not to be hurt about the crappy quality. Nothing would even get close.

All it took was a YouTube tutorial to replace Hummer’s ship, sitting in dead square in the best seed he could find for it. When he reached that level— he’d sent another email.
> It has the same machine if you want to retry together.
Wifies had grinded completely in hardcore for all of the materials, travelled to the coordinates, all for the screenshot and another crappy attempt at contacting him.
Hummer didn’t respond.

Talking to people who could have known him didn’t do much. In fact, talking to them only made it worse.
For example, keep in mind, he was desperate. Desperate enough to reach for something he knew was idiotic.

Messaging Parameter and even getting on a call. Yeah, not one of his proudest moments.
“Dude— you still owe me seventy-five dollars! I’m not gonna suddenly talk to you without-” At that, with a long and drawn-out groan, Wifies obliged.
His mind wasn’t in a stable place. Anyone would do the same.
The sound of a Cash App payment echoed off of the other’s microphone, quickly followed by stunned laughter.
“Seriously?”

“I’m not asking about the server.” He started, ignoring Parameter’s clear excitement in the background.
“Do you have a way to contact Hummer?”

“I can send you a forum?”
“Okay, yeah, cool! That’s what I need.”

Parameter had gone quiet, clearly not expecting the excitement with how dead Wifies’ voice had sounded a second ago.
“Are you being sarcastic?”

“No. Just, yeah, send it over.”

Ah, he still made a mistake going to this guy.
“Can I bother you for five bucks then or—”
Wifies had only become partially ashamed of how much money he’d wasted on Minecraft in the past month because of this.

There was Hummer, sending small one-off comments in reply to Leviathan screenshots.
He sorted the account by oldest posts to newest, trying to find any sign of something that could explain the disappearance besides Minecraft.

Three years. Two and a half years. He must’ve found when Hummer had truly grown interested around the two-year mark, then he could see his little ‘realization’ about the forums.
The comments slowed.

Two months ago.

Safe to say, forums had become a dead end as well. Which left another option, one that was dumber than Parameter (but substantially less money)
It took him a few days of battling with his morals before deciding he’d head for it.

> Hey, Arronax!

I have no clue if you’ve watched my videos before, or if this would even interest you; I need your opinions and information on someone interested in the Leviathan.

You seemed like the right person to go to.

Best regards, Wifies. <

Now, signing that off, he did feel close to a traitor for sending an email to her. He felt even worse upon trying to directly reach her through a server, knowing how Hummer would’ve hated it.

Instead of asking a true fan, he was asking someone who gave up believing in the Leviathan to begin with. Oh, the horrors.

She didn’t reply, and he couldn’t blame her. One random YouTuber sends you an email, clearly trying to use his reputation to coax you into—

> hey man! im up for it
we can call anytime. just one request.

add information about my server if you plan to use it! i think it’s a good redirect for people just getting interested. <

So emails and their formality were clearly becoming a no-go with more people. Not only that, he knew exactly what she was doing.
He wouldn’t make any real shoutout or mention to the server, obviously. Even if Hummer were alive, he wouldn’t contact him again for the Leviathan if he saw that.

She’d added Wifies’ Discord over replying to the email beyond that. There was a lot of time left in his schedule, well— not really, but what did it matter to delay a few video plans? This was more important by now.

Hopping into the call, he was hopeful.

“Hi, Arronax! It’s nice to meet you, really; your server has so much effort put into it.”
It took a lot of mental restraint not to immediately jump into mentioning Hummer, trying to speak as positively as he could.

“I know. Takes a lot to properly keep all the research.” She sounded just like her notes, customer service accent or whatever completely on. “But that’s all besides the point, right? You said you’re curious about someone?”

“I did.”
“And not something? You know, the Leviathan?”
“Yup.”

So they had two completely different motives. That much would be able to sum up the rest of the conversation.

“I needed to ask.” Wifies’ finger tapped against his desk, with his other hand moving around his mouse to click around through his recordings with Hummer.
“Did you ever know someone named Hummer, within the community? Like, an insistent believer in the Leviathan.”

She didn’t say anything.
That clearly wasn’t part of her plan for the interaction, at least.

“Maybe I’ve gotten a message or two, but that’s all. Is he one of the admins in the Minecraft server?”
“Nope.”
“Youtuber?”
“Also no.”

If shrugs were audible, he could’ve sworn she’d done one before giving him a blunt:
“Never heard of him then. I can get one of my mods to look for a username, but can’t say I’ve heard anything.”

Leaving the call made him hopeless.

Neither of them bothered with a proper goodbye, but he did message her some ‘thanks for your troubles!’ At least out of courtesy.

Her reply was a link along with some clearly pre-planned regarding her server, with the last of their messages being:
> thank u for shouting the server out for that all tho!
> even if it was basically nothing
He blocked her.

After blocking her, he didn’t keep track of how long he sat in his chair for. Only staring at the screen, occasionally refreshing his inbox or trying to look through his recordings again.

Hummer was gone.

Wifies was trying to hope for otherwise, keeping himself deep in denial, but all he could truly do was stare at their first email.
> Yours, Hummer5718
He knew the version, and he knew the coordinates. He knew it all.

All of that except the other’s whereabouts.

Wifies still planned on finding him. Some source code wouldn’t kill him to dig through for hours, and he could search deeper in usernames.
He’d be fine.
