Summary:

For years, Zeila lived in isolation, dedicating her life to accomplishing the impossible: time travel. To test her invention, she travels to 1983 to witness Michael Jackson’s legendary Motown 25 performance firsthand.

But when she finds herself stranded in the past, the one person she never expected to meet becomes the one person who makes leaving impossible.

Present Day — 2026

Monitors casted a faint purple glow across the dimly lit lab, washing the room in shifting neon reflections. Towering computer mainframes lined the walls, their steady hum drowned out by the soft shuffle of Zeila’s playlist drifting through the overhead speakers. Attention inevitably drifted toward the center of the room.

 At its core stood the reason the rest of the room existed.

Everything else in the lab, every monitor, every cable, every scattered notebook leaned unconsciously toward the massive workstation anchored beneath the ceiling lights, its dark surface crowded with messy stacks of loose pages each filled with calculations, annotated in hurried handwriting only Zeila could still decipher. Coffee stains marked several corners. 

Unlike the chaos surrounding it, the table felt deliberate, as though every sleepless night in the room had slowly orbited toward this single point. Her entire life existed on that table.

Thin holographic screens hovered inches above the metal surface, displaying shifting simulations in pale blue waves, illuminating the rotating formulas suspended at the table’s center, five and a half years of obsession hanging in pale blue light like something sacred.

A digital clock glowed in the corner of the room reading 2:42 a.m. She stopped counting how many nights she had spent chasing this equation.

Coffee cups and RedBull cans crowded every available surface, a half-eaten pizza sat at the edge of the table beside holographic simulations that stood frozen mid-calculation. Models covered transparent screens layered throughout the room, some scribbled by hand directly onto the glass after hours of frustration. Others floated holographically above her workstation, flickering with unfinished simulations and collapsing probability models.

Most people would’ve called the room a disaster. Zeila called it progress.

Her colleagues called her obsessive. She preferred determined.

The answer felt close. Painfully close.

Maybe she was off by a decimal point. Maybe two.

The possibility had kept her awake for nearly thirty-six hours straight. 

She dragged a tired hand through her curls before leaning over the keyboard again, eyes scanning the endless lines of sequences stretching across the monitors in pale blue light. The calculations layered over one another so densely they barely resembled mathematics anymore. They looked more like constellations.

When she ate, she ran models. When she occasionally slept, she dreamt about temporal displacement. Privately, the theory had consumed her for the past 5 and a half years. Publicly, Dr. Zeila Vitale was one of the leading engineers in artificial intelligence and adaptive systems architecture. By twenty-six, she had assisted in revolutionizing predictive AI integration technology, building systems capable of contextual learning so advanced that most tech companies had spent years trying, and failing to replicate them. 

While the rest of the world relied on Siri, Alexa, Gemini, and whatever new assistant corporations released every six months, She had built something entirely her own.

A.N.D.I.

Adaptive Neural Dialogue Intelligence.

Unlike traditional AI models, Andi wasn’t confined to simple responses or programmed automation. The system adapted dynamically, evolving alongside its user through behavioral analysis, predictive reasoning, and conversational learning. Integrated directly into Zeila’s custom smartwatch and synchronized throughout the entire lab, Andi had become less like software over the years and more like a second mind quietly existing beside her own.

Which was probably why Andi was the only thing still keeping her awake.

Or sane.

After a quick swig of her drink, Andi’s voice filled the room. “Your caffeine intake today has exceeded recommended cardiovascular safety thresholds,” Andi noted calmly from the watch around her wrist.

Zeila didn’t bother to look up from the monitors. “You said that two cans ago.”

“Correct.”

A faint smile tugged briefly at the corner of her mouth before fading again.

But tonight wasn’t about artificial intelligence. Tonight was about time.

For five and a half years, Zeila had been trying to prove temporal displacement was possible through a more indirect approach. While others approached temporal displacement through brute force or fantasy physics, She searched for it in resonance, frequency, and mathematical synchronization. 

So far, every simulation had failed. But tonight felt different.

“Okay,” she muttered. “One more time.” 

Her fingers moved quickly now, plugging in the final variables before she could second-guess herself. Temporal displacement coefficients. Resonance intervals. Harmonic decay constants.

For a second, she just stared at it.

This had to be it. 

The sequence finally felt…quiet.

Zeila swallowed. “Andi,” she said quietly. “Run synchronization analysis.”

The watch around her wrist vibrated once as a soft blue ring illuminated across its surface.

“Processing...”

The lab fell silent except for the faint hum of cooling fans and the distant snap of a song’s percussion.

The screen flashed as numbers flooded the central monitor faster than her eyes could follow. Simulations unfolded in branching patterns, timelines building and collapsing in milliseconds.

Zeila leaned forward. “Come on…” The screen flickered. 

Everything froze.

A sharp disappointed tone echoed through the lab. “Temporal synchronization failed,” Andi said.

“Primary equation unstable at harmonic convergence point.” “Margin of collapse: 97.2%.”

Zeila stared at the screen in silence. “No,” she whispered.

Her hands flew back across the keyboard immediately, scanning the calculations for mistakes she already knew she wouldn’t find. But the terrifying, yet motivating part, was it had almost worked. 

She sighed as she picked up a coffee stained sheet, crossing off what she had just believed yet again was the equation. Zeila had already been working for years on temporal resonance patterns through Andi. But she continued to encounter the same problem each time: all her formulas collapsing at the same point. Not because the math is wrong, but because time refuses to stabilize into a straight line. Every simulation eventually spirals into unpredictability. Andi continued to flag the same issue: nonlinear recurrence. Which meant time behaved cyclically under certain emotional-energy conditions.

As she looked up at a board full of mathematical sequences, her playlist cut to the next song. 

A bassline pulsed through the lab in steady repetition, low and smooth beneath the sharp snap of the drums. It filled the room like a heartbeat. Calm, measured, deliberate, and impossible to ignore. Zeila had barely noticed the music anymore; after hours of looping the same playlist, the rhythm had dissolved into the background hum of fluorescent lights, ticking monitors, and scrolling models. She now found herself absentmindedly tapping her pencil to a beat as her mind raced through possible equations.  

Da-dum.

Da-dum.

The beat of the song cut through her thoughts with mechanical precision. She paused.

Da-dum.

In her mind, the numbers across the board moved, falling into rhythm instead of chaos. The song stalked forward relentlessly, bass curling around the room like a pulse traveling through wires, through space… through time. 

Da-dum.
Da-dum.

Zeila’s eyes narrowed, recognizing a pattern. Realization crept over her slowly at first… then all at once.

The repeating sequence in her simulation: the temporal oscillations, the frequency shifts, the impossible inconsistencies that Andi had been flagging for months seemed to be moving in sync with the music.

Not perfectly, just close enough that she felt her stomach drop. 

Her pencil froze.

Suddenly, the lab felt too small. Billie Jean by Michael Jackson echoed in her ears, every drumbeat striking with eerie inevitability, like the universe itself was counting down to something.

And for the first time in seventeen straight hours of calculations, Zeila stopped looking at the sequence as numbers. She saw it  as a rhythm. 

She stood straighter, as she realized time was not accessed through physical distance, but through resonance alignment. In order to travel to a moment, you must mathematically synchronize with its temporal frequency.

“Time behaves like music,” she whispered. “It doesn’t shoot straight like an arrow. It moves in a rhythm.”

The bassline pulsed steadily through the lab as she typed feverishly.

Da-dum.
Da-dum.

Zeila stared at the screen, fingers hovering motionless above the keyboard, eyes locked on the final line of the formula glowing across the monitor. The adjustment had been almost laughably small. One variable shifted. One resonance interval rewritten. This couldn't be it… yet she couldn’t stop hearing in the back of her mind, picturing it even. Time … behaving like a rhythm.

She shook her head in denial. 

It was too simple.

Weeks of failures. Years of research. And somehow this tiny correction felt more stable than anything she had written before. This terrified her.

“Andi, run it again.” 

The watch on her wrist illuminated instantly. “Processing…”

Numbers flooded the screens again, endless streams of projections unfolding across the glass displays in pale blue waves. Temporal models formed and dissolved. Harmonic frequencies aligned and recalibrated in real time. Zeila watched the simulations, bracing for its collapse. 

They always collapsed. 

Every. Single. Time.

The speakers snapped softly with the percussion of Billie Jean.

Da-dum.

The equation stabilized. Her brow furrowed.

Da-dum.

The branching timelines stopped deteriorating. She slowly sat forward.

“No…”

A new set of calculations populated the monitor automatically. Convergence holding. Temporal drift nominal. Resonance alignment, stable.

Stable.

The word hit harder than she expected. She felt hot. The room felt too quiet, the music seemed distant now beneath the sound of her own heartbeat pounding in her ears.

“Andi…” she whispered.

For the first time since she had built the system, the AI hesitated before responding.

“Temporal synchronization successful.”

Silence.

Zeila stared at the screen, waiting for the error message. For the collapse warning. For something. 

Nothing came. Instead, the simulation remained perfectly still on the monitor, untouched by collapse for the first time in five and a half years. And somewhere deep in the pit of her stomach, excitement gave way to something colder. Because the impossible thing about time travel wasn’t building it. It was realizing the universe had just allowed it.

Zeila was frozen. Her dry laugh filled the room.

“If temporal synchronization is reproducible, the probability of global technological destabilization increases significantly.” Andi reasoned.

She listened absentmindedly. Implications avalanching into her brain all at once. She realized history can be witnessed, the dead are reachable, time is not fixed, every moment still exists somewhere. Zeila felt as if she were going to throw up.

The synchronization pattern remained motionless on the screen.

No warnings. No collapse. No cascading system failures. Just quiet blue light glowing across the monitors.

Stable.

Zeila stared at the word until it no longer looked real. “No,” she whispered again, weaker this time. Her fingers moved before her thoughts could catch up, reopening simulations, rerunning variables, checking for corrupted inputs. Lines of projections flooded the screens so quickly they blurred together. “Andi, rerun harmonic convergence.”

“Complete.”

“Again.”

“Complete.”

“Check resonance drift.”

“Nominal.”

“No, no, no—”

Her chair rolled backward sharply as she stood too fast, nearly tripping over a pile of books scattered across the floor.

This wasn’t possible.

Years of dead ends. Years of calculations collapsing at the exact same point. Years of proving to herself more than anyone else that time was not fixed, not truly linear, not as permanent as people believed. And now…

The room suddenly felt wrong. Too small.

The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead with unbearable sharpness. Every monitor illuminated the lab in cold blue waves that reflected off unfinished coffee cups, tangled wires, scribbled equations taped to the walls.

Billie Jean still played softly somewhere behind her, reaching its height. 

Zeila pressed both hands against the edge of the desk, breathing unevenly. “If this is real…” she murmured. The thought wouldn’t finish itself. Because if this was real, then every impossible thing became possible too.

Every moment believed to have vanished forever was still there. Waiting. 

Her stomach twisted violently. “Andi, again.” 

“I can run the sequence again and again at your request, but the result will remain the same, Zeila.”

“What are the odds this is an error?” she said quietly, almost afraid of the answer. 

A brief pause. She held her breath. 

“Based on current synchronization stability, the probability of computational error is less than 0.0003%.”

Zeila shut her eyes as she rubbed her eyebrow. For the first time since she began her research, she was no longer chasing a theory. She was standing at the edge of something irreversible.

She dragged both hands over her face before turning away from the monitors entirely. The lab suddenly felt restless around her now, too alive with possibility to stand still in. 

She started pacing. Slow at first, then faster. For a moment she thought she was hallucinating, her sleepless nights were catching up to her.

“Now what?” she muttered. “I do not understand the question, Zeila. Please clarify,” Andi replied.

Zeila laughed once under her breath, breathless and disbelieving. “I just solved temporal synchronization.” She motioned wildly toward the monitors. “What do you mean ‘clarify’?”

The glowing interface on her wrist flickered softly. “You appear to be experiencing elevated adrenaline, irregular breathing, and signs of cognitive overload.”

“Thank you, Andi. Very helpful.”

“You’re welcome.”

Despite herself, Zeila huffed out another laugh as she stared at the glowing sequence for another long moment, her thoughts spiraling faster than she could organize them. The simulations were still stable. Still holding.

Every instinct in her body screamed that something should be failing by now. Instead, the lab hummed quietly around her, monitors flickering blue against the dark. Billie Jean continued to pulse through the speakers. Though it was nearing its end, the bassline threaded through the silence like a second heartbeat.

Da-dum.
Da-dum.

Her pulse matched it now. “Andi,” she said slowly, “if temporal synchronization remains stable during live displacement…”

“Theoretically, physical traversal may be possible.” Andi responded. 

The words landed heavily in the room. Physical traversal. Not observation. Not a simulation.

Travel.

Zeila swallowed hard. A nervous laugh escaped her before she could stop it. “This is insane.”

“Under its Oxford or legal understanding ‘insanity’ is not a suitable term. However, under its social context and use among younger generations, the term may apply.”

She turned away from the monitors, dragging both hands through her hair as she paced across the lab again. This wasn’t a theory anymore, the simulation wanted to work. Every calculation aligned too perfectly, almost as if the answer had been waiting for her to notice it.

Zeila’s breakthrough in temporal synchronization theory allowed Andi’s role to evolve beyond artificial intelligence into something far more dangerous: temporal stabilization. The sequence alone could identify a moment in time. But Andi made reaching it possible.

In simpler terms: The equation gave time an address. Andi figured out how to get her there.

Her eyes flicked back toward the glowing screens. Then toward the watch on her wrist. Then back again. A thought began unfolding in her chest slowly enough to feel dangerous. 

The realization stopped her in place. “I have to test this out. I mean, as a scientist, it's sort of an obligation… Right?” A part of her already knew she was going to. And maybe that's why Andi hadn't responded. 

Slowly, her expression shifted. Another thought had begun unfolding. A quieter one. If she could go anywhere…Where would she go? The question settled over the room heavily.

Zeila turned back toward the screens, eyes distant now. “The moon landing,” she murmured first.

Immediately, Andi responded:  “July 20th, 1969. Estimated temporal resonance: moderate. Apollo 11 remains one of the strongest documented emotional convergence points in modern history.”

Zeila shook her head almost instantly.  

“No, Woodstock.”

“Woodstock, 1969, demonstrates unusually stable harmonic synchronization.” 

“No. The signing of the Declaration.”

“The signing of the Declaration of Independence produced a high-volume temporal resonance signature due to cultural longevity.”

Names and dates spilled into the room one after another while Andi automatically populated historical files across the monitors in glowing blue windows. These were moments that had reshaped the world, yet Zeila barely looked at any of them.

Each possibility felt enormous. Important. World-changing. And yet, nothing. No pull. No certainty. Zeila frowned. Because this should have been easy, shouldn’t it? This was history. It was Humanity.

Da-dum.

“Yeah,” Zeila murmured distractedly. “Okay.” But her attention kept slipping. Back to the music.

The last seconds of Billie Jean rolled through the speakers in smooth repetition, bassline low and relentless beneath the sharp snap of the drums. The rhythm threaded itself through everything now: the blinking monitors, the hum of cooling fans, the pulse beating at the base of her throat.

Da-dum.

Da-dum.

Da-dum.

Her pacing slowed as Michael’s voice repeated Billie Jean wasn't his lover, nearing the end of the song.

Da-dum.

Zeila stopped pacing and her eyes drifted toward the speaker in the corner of the lab. The song had looped so many times tonight it should have disappeared into the background by now. Instead, it suddenly felt louder than her own thoughts. Something about the song suddenly felt different tonight. Not nostalgic. Not familiar. Alive.

Da-dum.

The thought appeared so suddenly it startled her. A stage lit gold, the black sequined jacket, the sharp white socks, the crowd screaming before they even understood what they were seeing. 1983. 

Zeila stared ahead, stunned by the realization forming in her own chest. She didn't want to witness war, politics or empires. She wanted to see a performance. The performance. The Motown special. The first moonwalk. Her chest tightened unexpectedly. “Andi…”

Andi’s interface illuminated against her wrist. “You appear to have selected a destination.”

But Zeila barely heard it. Because the terrifying part wasn’t that she wanted to see the moonwalk, it was realizing that if she could travel anywhere in human history… this was where her heart had chosen to go.

“Motown 25. March 25th, 1983. The moonwalk.” Andi quickly pulled the video to the screen.

Zeila stared at the frozen image now projected across the central monitor. Michael Jackson stood mid-performance beneath the stage lights, one hand gripping the brim of his hat while the crowd blurred into darkness beyond him.

“No,” Zeila muttered suddenly, stepping back from the screen. “No, that’s insane.”

“Please clarify your use of insanity, Zeila.”

“I’m not using the first test of temporal displacement experiment in human history to watch Michael Jackson perform.”

A pause.

“Why not?” Andi responded.

She blinked. “Because—” She let out a disbelieving laugh. “Because that sounds ridiculous.”

Andi remained silent for exactly half a second before responding. “Current destination demonstrates unusually high temporal resonance stability.”

Zeila frowned. “What?”

Immediately, graphs populated across the nearest monitor. Waves of data unfolded in glowing blue patterns, resonance spikes rising sharply above baseline historical readings. “Analyzing cultural-emotional convergence levels,” Andi explained. “Repeated global exposure to the event over multiple decades appears to have strengthened temporal imprint persistence.”

Zeila stared at the graphs. The resonance levels were massive. “That can’t be right.”

“Recalculating…”

The numbers reran. Same result.

Andi continued: “The event represents one of the most repeatedly viewed and emotionally recognized performances in modern media history.” “Temporal synchronization probability is significantly higher than average.”

Her heartbeat quickened. Not because she was surprised, but because suddenly this wasn’t just desire anymore. It was mathematically viable.

Her eyes drifted back toward the paused image on the monitor.

The black sequined jacket. The stage lights. The moment before history changed.

A single performance replayed so many times, remembered by so many people, that the universe itself still carried its imprint decades later. The thought sent a chill down her spine. “Andi…”

“Yes?”

“If emotional resonance strengthens synchronization…” She hesitated. Then quietly: “That means moments people refuse to forget become easier to reach.”

A brief silence filled the lab. Then: “Correct.”

Zeila looked back at the formula glowing across the monitors. 

The lab had gone strangely still. The monitors continued glowing softly around her, temporal equations suspended across the screens in pale blue light while Michael’s Motown performance of Billie Jean played on the screen.

She stood motionless near the center of the room, staring at the destination coordinates Andi had projected into the air.

Pasadena Civic Auditorium. March 25th, 1983.

A place. 

A date. 

A moment waiting somewhere beyond the edge of impossible.

Her stomach tightened. This had stopped feeling theoretical minutes ago. Now it felt real enough to touch. “Andi,” she said quietly, “what are the chances of successful return synchronization after initial displacement?” The AI responded immediately.

“Unknown.”

Zeila closed her eyes briefly. Of course, no one had ever done this before. No failed experiments. No historical data. No precedent. Just her. The first person in human history standing at the edge of time with absolutely no idea what waited on the other side.

Fear crept coldly down her spine then. Not panic. Something quieter. The kind that settles into your chest when you realize there is still time to walk away. She looked around the lab slowly.

The scattered notebooks. Coffee cups. Calculations covering the walls. Years of her life compressed into one sleepless room humming softly in the dark. All of it had led here.

Suddenly, Zeila understood something terrifying: If she shut the system down tonight… if she walked away, called the university, contacted the government, or published the research, she would lose this moment forever.

The first jump wouldn’t belong to her. It would become meetings. Committees. Military oversight. Containment. History would swallow it before she ever got the chance to feel it. Her chest tightened sharply. No. That wasn’t what she wanted. Not at first. 

Purposefully this time, she looked at Michael on the screen. “Andi,” she said.

“Yes, Zeila?”

Her pulse hammered violently now, but her voice came out steady. “Prepare temporal synchronization.”

A brief pause.

As if the AI understood the weight of what she was asking. Then:

“Destination?”

Zeila stared at the glowing coordinates suspended in front of her. And despite every rational thought screaming in the back of her mind, she smiled. “A twenty-four-hour buffer should minimize catastrophic synchronization displacement.” she whispered. 

“Pasadena Civic Auditorium. March 24, 1983.”
