Chapter Text
_______
Megumi walked into the corner store, holding a list that Gojo had given him this morning. The bell dinged overhead as he entered through the doors.
“Don’t forget ANYTHING on this list, Megs.” he recalled Gojo saying.
He sighed and read the first item. ‘Milk’. Easy task, but why couldn’t Gojo buy it on his own? Whatever. He just wanted to go home and read, the faster he bought everything, the faster he could read.
He grabbed a shopping cart and found the milk aisle, the hum of refrigerators being covered by a toddler crying. He grabbed the milk and placed it inside, grabbing the list from his pocket and reading the next item. ‘Eggs’. Simple. But Megumi could’ve sworn they had at least a carton at home. He just shrugged it off, going to find the eggs.
He wandered around, finding everything on the list with ease. ‘Milk, eggs, flour, sugar, frosting, butter, ice cream, etc.’ Was he making a cake or something?
Megumi made his way to the register and waited patiently in the line. He spotted a pink-haired cashier. He looked around the same age and height as Megumi.
His body was muscular, but not in a way that made him seem intimidating. His skin was tan in contrast with his pink hair. The sides and back were shaved into a dark undercut as the longer pink strands framed his face. He had honey-brown eyes and a nice, welcoming smile. He had a scar near his lip and across his face, going through his brow.
Megumi had been here a lot, and had never seen him before. He must be a new hire.
It was his turn to scan his items and pay, so he set everything on the checkout conveyor belt. He slid the cart over to the plastic bags and waited for his things to get bagged, listening to the beeping of the scanner and subtle flicker of the red light.
“Are you making a cake or something?” a voice said, softly.
Megumi looked up to see the pink-haired cashier. His name tag read “Yuuji Itadori”.
“Uhm, I don’t know. My guardian sent me to buy all of this.” Megumi said, putting the bagged ingredients in the cart.
“Oh! I hope you have lots of fun then!” Itadori said, smiling as he placed the last thing in the bag and handed it to Megumi.
Their fingers brushed for the briefest second before Megumi quickly pulled his hand back.
“T-Thanks.” Megumi replied, putting the last bag inside the cart as he walked to his car.
He opened the trunk and loaded everything in, closing the lid and turning around to return the cart.
He walked back to the corner store as he pushed the now empty cart and headed inside. He slid it into the line of carts and was about to leave when he heard Itadori laugh.
Megumi turned around and saw Itadori smiling and beaming as he spoke to a customer, bagging their food. “Have a good day, ma’am!” he called out, his eyes followed her until they suddenly landed on Megumi, who was staring.
He quickly tore his gaze off of Itadori and left, walking out as he headed back to his car. It wasn’t like him to stare, and he personally found it rude. He felt bad, so he decided that the next day he’d go back and apologize.
______
The next day, he pulled up in his car. He parked in between two cars and got out. As he was walking, hands in his pockets, he tripped over his own shoe.
Suddenly, he felt strong arms around his waist. They caught him just as he was about to fall. His hands flew out of his pockets and gripped the arm, eyes wide.
“You okay?”
Shit. Did it seriously have to be Itadori that caught him?
Megumi pulled away, clearing his throat as the tightness around his waist faded away. “Sorry, I should’ve paid attention.”
Itadori flashed a bright smile. “No biggie! I was about to head to my shift.” He explained, stepping back once to create a proper distance. “If you don’t mind me asking, why are you here again? Did you not get everything you needed yesterday?”
Megumi exhaled, avoiding eye contact for a while before meeting his gaze. “I wanted to apologize for—“
“You sure do say sorry a lot.” Itadori joked, crossing his arms.
Megumi rolled his eyes, a hand on his hip. “—staring at you yesterday. It was impolite.”
Itadori leaned in, smirking slightly. “You’re sorry for staring? No one usually apologizes to me for that.” he rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m used to it by now.”
Itadori inhaled, shifting his weight to his right leg. “But, if you really want to make it up to me, let me take you to coffee?” he suggested, voice hesitant.
Megumi paused, eyes locked on Itadori’s. “Are you messing with me?” he grumbled, annoyance crossing his face. “Because if you are, I take back my apology.”
Itadori put his hands up, proving innocence. “I swear I’m not. Just thought you seemed cool,” he said matter-of-factly.
Megumi thought for a moment. He wasn’t going to lie, Itadori was fairly attractive. But if he did say yes to grabbing coffee, he wouldn’t just agree because he was eye candy.
He would agree because Itadori seemed like a genuinely good guy. He saved someone that was about to fall, and he didn’t even know them. He just did it out of the kindness of his heart.
When he scans people’s groceries, he makes small talk with customers to make them comfortable. It’s a pretty admirable trait.
“Okay. I’ll go grab coffee with you.” Megumi agreed, a small smile formed on his lips.
“Okay, okay coolio!” Itadori grinned, beaming. He extended his hand. “May I have your phone? I’ll put my number in it so that I can send you the location if that’s okay.”
Megumi reached in his pocket, grabbing his phone and handing it to Itadori. “Here.” he unlocked it.
Itadori put in his number, saving himself as “Yuuji Itadoriii 😻💪”
Itadori gave Megumi back his phone. “Text me?” He asked politely, voice soft.
“Mhm.” Megumi said, nodding his head once. He slid his phone back in his pocket and turned back to his car.
“Wait- before you go, I kind of didn’t get your name.” Itadori stated, looking expectantly at Megumi.
“Oh yeah. You asked me out and don’t even know my name?” Megumi teased, one foot already in his car.
“I just thought you were pretty.” Itadori said flatly, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“I-Um- It’s Megumi. Megumi Fushiguro.” Megumi choked out, shocked at his bluntness.
“Okay, see ya fushiguro!” Itadori waved him off as Megumi got in his car and started it.
This was gonna be one hell of an experience.
