Work Text:
The desire of Egyptian independence had grown by the minute. Fairly enough it had every right to. You silently thought as you lightly held the pen; looking across the table to be met with the paleness of the Englishman, who wasn't friendly towards you as he was with others; by others you'd mean the bourgeoise Egyptians who'd benefitted from all of this background noise. As you stare at the proposal, you couldn't help but notice the formality of the man sotting in front of you, his suit, alongside his brown hair. It somewhat then made you feel inferior to him. You don't make much out of it and rub your forehead in frustration.
"Do you not hear yourself right now?" you yelled with your half-broken English, as your hands throbbed through the grip of the pen. Silence was heard for those few seconds before he finally responded.
"Tell me what you really want". Britain replied to your response.
"A free Egypt? Is that too much to ask for?" You respond, your voice feigns longing. He doesn't respond & clears his throat bitterly.
"I am not letting you get what you want. It isn't beneficial for me if I just let all hell loose! that man needs me, I am the only person who keeps the filth in this nation in order" He almost snapped at the remark you made. You knew he was good at pretending. Too well at pretending—hell, you'd believe it if you were 'soft spoken' as Egypt himself.
"What will have to happen for you to care about this situation itself?" You spoke with all sincerity as Britain got up to leave, his face blank.
"Wafd. If you could mind and not add on?" He retorted at your words, his voice rising ever so slightly.
"I thought you wanted to help but I guess I was rightfully wrong for thinking that you'd care". You whispered under your breath quite angered at his gestures and his condescending tone towards you- most importantly Egypt.
You couldn't go against Egypt either as he was stuck in his own issues within others.
He grasped your wrist until you couldn't feel it anymore. Your hand shaking from how much he'd been holding it for.
"Don't try to protest okay? eventually I'll find a good proposal for negotiation".
You nod as he lets go— your heart almost about to pound out of your chest as you maintain a distance to calm yourself down.
"I haven't ever committed anything besides wanting to see the people be liberated from your tyranny". You stare at him; he doesn't respond. Instead he nears up to you.
"I recognize you and your efforts. It would be a shame to not recognize you when everyone already has seen you as a symbol of independence". His voice cuts through your shaken appearance. He laughs a-bit & holds you in place. Just to catch a glimpse of you. He shakes your hand & doesn't bother to say anything more. A oddly weird interaction you thought.
The sound of the gunshot rang in your head. You feel a warm pool of blood in your mouth. The taste of iron and copper mixing altogether at once as the Englishman approaches you with low intent. His breath lingered on your face as he stared at the sight in awe. You beg yourself silently to look away — that this is all your imagination —a nightmare but gosh it wasn't. You couldn't make out what he was saying but you assumed it was something along the lines of "You need to be stronger then this". You cough out blood on your chest as he laid condescendingly beside your corpse. He whispers in your temple as your head is pounding, something else—something supposedly sweet that you were supposed to have—freedom.
" I had the chance to make it happen. Now your a martyr . Don't you feel great? you died defending your land". He shakes you to make sure of your death. You weren't ever dead— you had just started a new beginning and this was the founding of being what you had always wished to be. Your head ran with thoughts endlessly as the Englishman got up to leave. He closes your mouth for you as you try to mouth something. Something you wish you had. Freedom. The same man that took that opportunity away from you. It seemed to taunt you more than it should've—you couldn't help but think that maybe if you could've been listened to all of this wouldn't have occurred.
You still can't think right? can you?.
