Our Happy Ending

Summary:

Blue has been searching for his dearest Yellow everywhere, but he is nowhere to be seen. Could that little yellow flower in the garden have anything do to with it?

(for context, the flowers can revert back to their regular flower forms at will)

Work Text:

“Yellow? Yellow? Come on out, dear! You’re making me awfully worried!”

Blue had been fruitlessly searching for his partner for who knows how long. Naturally, he had assumed that his dear Yellow had made some minor error and was off to punish himself again, but his darling was entirely absent from all his usual punishment areas. The pace of Blue’s heartbeat hastened ever-so-slightly as he imagined what Yellow could possibly be doing. Had he gone too far this time and done something irreversible? Was his dearest most special sunflower in pain? The mere thought made Blue’s stomach churn.

After what had quite possibly been several hours, Blue found himself in the middle of the vast garden searching through every shrub and weed in case his dearest Yellow was hiding in there somewhere. Alas, there didn’t appear to be any sign of Yellow anywhere. Not even the floradinns could give an answer. Just as Blue was about to move on to the next area, he spotted something out of the corner of his eye. In the middle of the clearing stood a small yellow flower that faced away from him, seeming almost as if it was wilting pitifully.

“Oh, Yellow…” Blue sighed as he made his way over to the flower with gentle steps. The sight was so sad it made his heart break a little. Slowly, Blue knelt down and gently cupped his hands around the flower, scooping it up into his arms.

“What happened, my dear?” No response followed, and the flower seemed to turn its head away slightly. Blue reached out and softly stroked Yellow’s delicate petals as he held him closely to his chest. He breathed slowly and deliberately, partly in relief that his darling was safe, but also to create a soothing pattern for Yellow to follow.

“Yellow, could you please tell me what is bothering you?” Still no response. The flower wilted its head even more in shame. Blue’s heart ached even more at the sight. What could have possibly happened for him to be in such a state? He gently rocked the limp flower in his arms soothingly to let him know he was okay. “Come on, Yellow, you’re making Mr Butterfly very worried.”

The flower remained silent for a moment, before quietly murmuring, “I don’ deserve ta be real.”

Blue’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “What?”

“I don’ deserve ta be real.” Yellow repeated, somehow sounding even more pitiful than before. “I don’ deserve ta have feelin’s or a voice or nut’n. I don’ deserve ta be human.” His voice cracked a little as if he was holding back tears. His petals almost seemed to shake and quiver. “I ain’t deservin’ of yer embrace, Blue. Or yer care. Or yer purdy face. Just leave me ta be a pathetic lil’ flower just like ‘m ‘sposta be.”

Blue would have put his hand over his mouth in devastation if he weren’t holding the most precious thing in the world right then. Tears threatened to prick at the corners of his eyes in sorrow for his lover. How could he say such things about himself? How could he believe any of it? The thought was almost too much to bear. Blue held Yellow even closer to himself, careful not to crumple any of his fragile petals, and continued rocking his small and sorrowful form, tenderly caressing his petals and stem with his soft fingers.

“Yellow…” Blue murmured sympathetically as he hugged him tight, taking deep and deliberate breaths to slow down his own quickly beating heart. He peppered an array of gentle kisses against Yellow’s fragrant petals, cautious as to not overwhelm him in his sensitive state. “None of that is true, my darling,” he continued in a low and soothing voice, “you deserve to be happy. You deserve to think and feel and speak, to let your heart dance its way all throughout your physical form. You deserve to be human.”

Blue lay one final kiss to the top of Yellow’s topmost petal and felt the weight in his arms slowly grow. He grinned slightly as he finally was able to peer down at Yellow’s handsome face. Yellow was still shaking violently and tears still formed in his eyes, dripping slowly down his face one by one. Blue cupped his face in his hands and delicately stroked his wet cheeks, tilting his head up slightly to look at him. The sight of Blue’s face alone made Yellow start crying again, and Blue was quick to welcome him into his warm embrace. He held him ever tighter, softly hushing him and rubbing his back as he sobbed. Slowly but surely, the tears slowed and Yellow’s breathing became relatively even.

From deep within Blue’s loving embrace, Yellow ashamedly muttered, “I don’ deserve ya, Blue.”

Blue unwrapped himself from Yellow and looked up into his eyes, “You deserve every bit of me, darling. Never doubt that, ever. In fact, I must say, at times I feel almost undeserving of you.”

Yellow’s eyes widened instantly and his hat shot up in surprise, “Huh-wha????!!!” he stammered, “b-but, yer you! How could sum’n like you feel undeservin’ of lil’ ol’ me?????”

Blue chuckled warmly, “Well, it is hard to feel deserving of such a handsome and charming cowboy such as yourself.”

Yellow’s face turned beet red as he quickly covered it with his hat, giggling and stammering bashfully. Blue slowly lowered Yellow’s hat and looked deep into his eyes, wiping one final tear off his cheek with his thumb.

“Never ever doubt my love for you, my sweetest sunflower, for not even a thousand suns could shine brighter than my greatest star. No temptation could ever lead me astray, no deed could ever make me turn my back. Our happy endings are with each other.” Blue and Yellow lovingly gazed deep into each other’s souls as if they were the only two people in the world. Their fingers entwined as they sat there, letting the rest of the world slip away beyond the bubble of their presence. Yellow leaned down and kissed the soft skin on Blue’s hand.

“I luv ya, Blue.”

“I love you too, Yellow.”
