Work Text:

It was a brisk fall afternoon. The leaves rolled past the trees they were clamped on with every small gust of wind, commuter traffic wasn't terrorizing the town roads just yet, and light grey clouds rolled over the sky, obscuring the sun. The last minutes of the school day were finishing up, and eventually the dismissal bell rung. Before Kris got up out of their seat, they made a question to Susie asking if the two could hang out later today since school is out.

"Nah, I've got a date to be at with Noelle in a couple, can't really sneak anything in for you", she answered, saying that maybe there can be another time. Kris thought to themself a bit after hearing the mention of a "date". That must've been Susie's way of just saying a regular hangout? They couldn't really catch the hint. In response to Susie, they were disappointed.

"...You okay with that?", Susie asked following her response. Kris hesitantly nodded.

"Okay. Just saying, you've been following me around like a dog lately, you wanna talk about it?", she asked again. Kris shook their head, trying to make her believe everything was fine. She partially believed things were fine after Kris' response, but still seemed like their recent behaviors were questionable leaving room for doubt that things were alright with Kris. She got up from her desk, and left the classroom to prepare for her date with Noelle. Kris froze up. They started thinking about the hypothetical realizations she may have made that they were extremely clingy towards her. They sighed and walked out of the classroom and back home, trying to calm down.

...

After a while, Kris thought about that mentioned date and where it could potentially have been held. They thought maybe they could try to hear in on the conversation between Noelle and Susie both without being in plain sight and without getting caught by someone else or them. They tried to deduce hypothetical common date locations in town and drew the conclusion to one pinpointed location: QC's Diner. Kris got up, walked out of the house, and made their way not inside of QC's Diner since that'd give them away, but to the side. They stood next to the side wall, and tried to listen in on the conversation between Susie and Noelle.

...

It seemed like the two were seriously having fun with each other. They talked to each other in very loving ways that they would never do in the visible presence of anyone else they knew: not Kris, not Berdly, nor even Ralsei. Kris started to feel jealous of Noelle. What did she have that they didn't? Was it the charisma? Was it being sociable? Was it being composed in ways that Kris wasn't?

...

This was clearly just making Kris feel bad about themself. They sighed and took a walk around the town to clear their head, grabbing a soft drink at 'Sans to try to wash down the things they were feeling at the moment, before walking home with a sense of insecurity about themself.

...

Maybe a little bit of transparency on relationship status could've prevented this all.
