A Brand New Beginning

Summary:

Jean Grey knew that with had happened at the DoDC incident. She really couldn’t be much longer in New York, it wouldn’t be long after Metzger or someone worse went after her again. However as dumb as it was for, and she knew it was more then likely going to end up badly, she didn’t trust Peter (from what she had seen in his mind) for him to stay in bed even one or two days for her to be able to leave in Peace, because she knew he wasn’t going to take his time and rest and jump back into fighting crime. So for now she would stay until he was back in his top fighting condition or so she said

Chapter Text

He Is Going To Kill Himself

“I did my part” Jean Grey thought to herself, she knew it sounded cold especially after what he had done for her. Trying to make things right immediately after Metzger’s deceit to Peter had been revealed. Peter had done a lot for her and she would be forever grateful. But she had to leave North. She bought the bus ticket and therefore she had to go. New York was too dangerous for her and ultimately she had nothing to do in the city anymore. Besides she doubted Peter wanted her in his life or even saw her as a friend. Sure she read his mind and saw at least in that moment he was trying to help her but she doubted it was anything besides his perceived burden as a hero

She was about to board the bus. It was empty and thus it meant she wouldn’t be bothered. And she could keep to her own thoughts about what to do and where to actually go, since going North was just a vague goal she had. He didn’t need her anymore, she did her part. That was what Jean thought and what she felt was the truth, and she didn’t want to look into Peter’s mind beyond that. Not out of fear, never that it’s not like she really cared past what she felt was a debt she knew she had paid.

Besides, she knew Peter was smart and was going to stay in bed, and rest from the heavy wound he got from Frank’s shot (accidental shot which was meant for her…). So she could leave in peace, that Peter was going to care of himself and not spin webs over the high buildings in NYC…And thus as she was going to give her first step on the bus she immediately thought and said “He is going to kill himself” Jean thought as she didn’t give her step to the bust and left. It was foolish, she knew that. Jean had to leave because being in the city were the DoDC had one of its main buildings was like a mouse setting its hole next to where the cat usually slept

However she knew that Peter was going to immediately jump into the suit and throw himself at the first crime he saw. “I hate that he is making me stay longer all because he won’t rest for five minutes” Jean cursed in a whisper, as she began to make her way to Peter’s. Jean didn’t like Peter’s apartment, it needed some spring cleaning, hopefully when she told…well made fun of Peter’s apartment and how it was, would make it more liveable. Not for her, but for whatever people he would ever bring in or well barged into his apartment. Yeah, Jean knew she was guilty of the latter. But desperate measures for desperate times. And that is what Jean was doing right now “It’s just for a couple day, I look after him” She thought. Jean sincerely hoped Peter wasn’t rushing into spinning webs and fighting criminals

“I am going to kill him” Jean said to herself rather annoyed and genuinely frustrated. And whenever she had the chance, she was going to make Peter pay. She barely managed to catch up to him with the Spider Tracker app (and yes she could have just seen him through the eyes of another person so she could stay in the comfort of a coffee shop but Jean had to simply see him as close as she could because she didn’t feel completely comfortable to her heightened telepathy. And no she wasn’t looking for an excuse to just be as close as she could. Never. She wasn’t like that).

It was a bleak rainy night in New York, with her having to buy an umbrella and hide but still see with her full vision of her body. And while Jean knew maybe she was a bit stubborn, she didn’t want to use her telepathy on the criminals because it would be too obvious and the point was to be as unseen as she could be. And it wasn’t an excuse she just made. Never

Jean could see Peter was much slower, he was still fast and quick on his mind. But the idiot was jumping around like he wasn’t a superhuman, and he felt more human in a way with his movement. Less spectacular, more mundane, closer to just a really good athlete who was getting there in age for his respective sport. Or that’s what Jean felt about it and she was currently mad at him for risking himself that much, especially with him quipping and clearly not being rested enough to think something up on the spot.

The criminals themselves were just ten bank robbers, who unfortunately for Peter had some type of stolen plasma rifles and some other things like pulse grenades and some drones that shot ammo rounds at Peter who was wearing his suit, which had a rain coat over it, though considering how he moved, the thing might as well just be an accessory to not look “naked” if that’s how Jean would describe the situation. “Hey just because I came back from vacations, doesn’t mean I was going to” Peter said kind of stopping himself unsure what to say, as he dived from below, landing and giving a kick to the robber’s stomach who got staggered and grunted in pain as Peter shot a web and slammed the rifle down and stomped on it, breaking the thing “Not come back somebody’s got to pay the rent over these skies” Peter said as if he just came up with that

Jean shaked her head, as she peeked up from where she was hiding. “Dork” she said “Idiot” she repeated, however she saw one of the robbers was going to hit him with a shock baton as the other robbers were going to shoot a volley of plasma. (Jean immediately jammed the rifles with her mind, causing shock to the bank robbers who hit the chamber and kept pulling the trigger without knowing the thing wasn’t going to fire) Jean knew Peter could maybe dodge it, and part of her wanted him to get hit by the shock baton, not out of malice (well just a tinge) but just for that terrible quip or if you could call it that. But Jean wasn’t going to let it happen, even if it was in a morbid way funny to her. She used her telepathy to freeze the robber’s shoulder and wrist.

Peter gave a kick to the man’s face and spun a web on the man’s hands. The robber fell on his rear and Peter webbed him quickly to stick to the floor. Peter did a backflip jump, and spun multiple webs midair taking the rifles and slammed them on the robbers. With Peter, quickly diving down and punching and kicking the robbers as he webbed them after the punches “Things are rough aren't they? I mean back in my day, criminals got alien weaponry that didn’t jam. Let me guess Hammertech!” Peter said amused as he landed back on the ground

“Yeah, almost as if you took out the guy who sold them,” one of the robbers said, with a panting voice. Clearly hurt by the beat down. Peter placed his hands exaggeratedly on his face “What me? That was my substitute that day, Tobey” Peter said as if he was truly sorry. Police sirens began to be heard as the cruisers came closer and closer

“I know your panting and tired” Jean thought annoyed as she saw Peter, lightly place his hand on his back and then hips and clearly was panting behind the mask “Don’t play it off, you don’t fool me” Jean thought as she saw the cops arrive with the detective lady (DeWolff. Jean already knew her name, and she didn’t read one of the cops' minds to figure it out. Not that anyone could prove it right?). With Peter talking to the cops, with DeWolff pulling Peter aside and scolding him for being out and about so soon. Jean already liked her (and they also shared their first name which was cool). Jean left as she knew with her luck, Peter would by chance see her and well she didn’t want to explain herself without feeling like a stalker

She wasn’t a stalker and she definitely wasn’t following Peter, because it was merely her assisting Spider-Man. At least that’s how she viewed it. And it was the only truth that no one could question. “Not a stalker” she thought as she began to leave the crime scene

Peter came back very beat up, he hadn’t recovered fully but crime didn’t sleep and he was the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, he had to be there for his Neighborhood and of course heroes don’t have a day off. One night could always make a difference, good or bad. And while he wasn’t Superman, he sure would try his best and push his limits to do good. Peter took off his suit and took a quick shower. He still felt his cheeks were hot from the scolding DeWolffe gave him “Taking it easy, resting and sleeping in bed. Yeah right Spider-Man, I didn’t buy those lies for one minute, keep lying to me! When you're dragging your half dead body because you didn’t sleep enough after just coming back from the hospital after a 50 Caliber round, don’t be crying to me. Maldito” Detective DeWolff had said very angry with Peter feeling like a kid as he placed his hand on his shoulder and rubbed it

Peter after his shower, took some advil and was going to sleep a little bit before he heard his phone get a message. He grabbed the phone, quietly hoping it was a late night text from Ned…or MJ but he wanted Ned. Less awkward and it was good to talk to someone. He opened his text and it was a “You're supposed to be resting” the text said, it was from a number he didn’t recognize/didn’t have registered. “Frank?” Peter sent out the message, but now that he thought about it, Frank would be way more forward and probably have a curse in the text, this text sounded more like scolding

“Read” Peter saw the person read it. The texting bubble went on for a minute or two, which drove Peter crazy as he didn’t know who it was unless…

“Do you forget every girl you hit up? I don’t know if I should blush or drop an anvil on you” The person texted back, with a quick follow back “Frank? Are you serious? I am sure when he needs to get a hold of you, he ‘ll just crash into your apartment with a helicopter. Guy has issues” Peter read out loud the text. “Jean?” Peter replied, as he looked around his apartment

“Are you in the city?, weren't you heading North? Has your telepathic range expanded? Did you like to watch me all day? Did you follow me? Wait, did Frank really think about crashing a Helicopter into my apartment? Is this recent? Are you ok? Do you need my help? Need a place to stay?” Peter quickly typed and sent, he was worried about Jean but also felt embarrassed he didn’t think it was her reaching out however in his defense, he assumed she was far north meaning upstate far from her range (which Peter calculated because out of fun he supposed) and he assumed her style was more sending a telepathic message

“Hold on, first buy me coffee before you ask me to spend the night. Jeez” Jean typed and sent to Peter, he quickly widened his eyes thinking he made the last part sound bad. “No. I didn’t mean it like that, I meant it as if you need somewhere safe to stay!” Peter quickly texted.

“I’ll think about it” Jean texted “Just clean up your place. Besides if I want I’ll just show up when I need to. Don’t worry about that” Jean sent the text. “Wait what?” Peter replied unsure what to really think about it all with that being the only thing that came to his mind. “Night” Jean replied.
