Work Text:

“Extra! Extra! Read all about it!” was the only thing Rin Itoshi heard in the past 15 minutes and it was getting really annoying.

“Read all about it with your partner and a lovely bouquet!”

Rin gritted his teeth.

“And check out these fresh tomatoes! Ripe for the summer, I tell ya! Get it great while ya can!”

Damn it, shut your mouth…

“Perfect for all y’all gardeners and potion-makers!”

I need to make a potion to shut that country boy’s mouth-

“Hey, you there! Ya seem like ya would be interested, good potion-maker, sir!”

“SHUT UP!!” Rin whirled around and glared at the owner of the fruits, veggies, flowers, newspapers and God knows whatever else on that stall, who was blinking in confusion at Rin’s anger.

“Eh?” His wide periwinkle eyes furrowed into a frown. “What’s the matter, ma good sir?”

“YOU KEEP YELLING, DAMN IT!!” Rin snapped. “How the Hell is a potion-maker supposed to listen to their own mind think with you merchants chitter-chattering incessantly in my ear?!”

The owner blinked in confusion again, then laughed. “A-Ah, sorry, ma good sir! I thought you was just browsin’! Oopsie daisy!”

“DON’T OOPSIE DAISY ME, TEPID MONKEY!!”

“Ma name’s Nanase Nijiro, good sir! Say it right!”

Rin growled. Is this stupid merchant giving me backchat?!

Before Rin could flat-out punch him in the face, Nanase ducked under the stall and fished out a fresh set of lilies.

“Voila! You okay, sir? Ya look a bit ruffled! More than ma chickens at the caw-caw of a crow!”

Rin slapped the lilies out of Nanase’s hands. “Shut up. I came here for rosemary.”

“For berries?”

“No, rosemary!”

“Ah, wild cherries?”

“ARE YOU JUST MESSING WITH ME?!”

“Messin’ with ya? Nah, I aint! Rosemary, right? Got it right here!”

Rin glared at the bouquet of roses Nanase brought from the corner of his stall. He pinched the bridge of his nose.

So this is why potion-makers harvest their own things…

“Will ya marry me then?”

“OH SHUT THE HELL UP!!”

“But don’t ya need roses for a love potion?”

“I ASKED FOR ROSEMARY FOR A DAMN FRIENDSHIP POTION, YOU COUNTRY BUMPKIN!!”

Nanase paused. Then, his bright eyes widened.

“Ah! Forgive me, good sir! I know what ya need now!”

Oh, thank God, I can finally get the rosemary so nii-chan can talk to me again-

“Oomph!” Rin grunted as Nanase threw his arms around him in a tight hug.

“See that? Ah, a good friendship requires more than just a potion, ya know?”

Rin felt smoke spew from his ears. Nanase saw it too, but he didn’t seem to care and continued hugging him.

Sighing, Rin went lax and rolled his eyes.

“I hate you merchants.” he grumbled, but decided the friendship potion would be a waste of time if this fool already decided the contrary.

Notes:

I feel like I could have just as easily made this an original work but oh well...
