Summary
There’s an envelope sitting on the kitchen table.
Flora knows, without needing to read it, who it’s from. It’s a bright, vivid red, a bloodstain on the lacquered wood, mocking, and her first instinct is to take it out back and burn it, feed the ashes to the soil. Her second, more reasonable instinct is to open it: if it’s from who she knows it is, then the consequences of refusing to address its contents are certainly worse than the contents themselves.
So, despite everything, Flora opens it.
Inside the envelope are two things: a folded piece of cream paper, and two tickets.
