five more minutes

Summary:

“Love you,” Yuuji mumbles against his skin, so soft and sincere that Megumi’s heart swells. “So much. Don’t know what to do with it.”

Megumi’s arms come up around him in response, holding him close, and he presses a gentle kiss to the top of Yuuji’s wet hair. “I love you, too,” he answers, and the words feel inadequate for the depth of what sits in his chest – but Yuuji seems to understand anyway, because the purr spikes in intensity again, warm and elated and completely unrestrained.

---

or, Yuuji purrs a lot.

Work Text:

Yuuji is purring.

It’s the first thing Megumi registers when he wakes and consciousness begins to creep in, long before his eyes have even considered opening against the muted glow seeping in through the half-drawn curtains. The warm, solid weight of Yuuji is pressed along the entire length of his back like a living blanket, one arm slung heavy and proprietary over the curve of Megumi’s waist while the other is tucked somewhere underneath the pillow they somehow always end up sharing.

Yuuji’s breath ghosts along the nape of Megumi’s neck in that steady, sleep-deep rhythm – right over the sensitive scent gland that still carries the faint mark of last night’s careful claim; and every so often, a low, almost subsonic rumble vibrates through the broad expanse of Yuuji’s chest and sinks straight into Megumi’s spine, a sleepy almost-purr that feels less like a sound and more like a physical presence settling into the marrow of his bones.

Megumi lies there for a long while, much longer than he needs to. He cracks his eyes open against the gradual brightening of the room as he lazily catalogues the world around him: the way Yuuji’s thigh is slotted between his own, how the sheets have twisted around their tangled legs like living things determined to keep them from drifting even an inch apart in the night. And the most satisfying of all is the faint residual sweetness of Yuuji’s omega scent that clings to the pillows and the blankets and the very surface of Megumi’s skin like a second, invisible layer of belonging.

There is something slightly different about that scent this morning – something richer and thicker, almost syrupy in the way it saturates the air around them, a heavy signal of impending heat just on the horizon. It’s the most beautiful scent in the world, Megumi thinks.

He should get up, though. The coffee needs to be made, breakfast needs to be started, and the rest of the world outside of their bubble of shared breath and heat is already buzzing with life. But Yuuji is like a furnace against his back, and the low rumble of that almost-purr is lowering Megumi’s resolve with every passing second – so he allows himself a few more minutes to soak in the hazy, lovedrunk weight of the omega wrapped so tightly around him it’s like he never intends to let go.

When he finally does force himself to extract his body from the cocoon of Yuuji’s hold, he does so with the careful, practiced movements of someone who has learned exactly how much pressure to put on the mattress so that Yuuji only shifts and mumbles something incoherent before burying his face deep into the pillow. Megumi sits on the edge of the bed for another moment, taking in the sight of Yuuji’s disheveled hair and the way the sheets have molded themselves to the curve of his sleeping form, before he rises and quietly pads across the hardwood floor toward the bathroom.

He brushes his teeth and then returns to the bedroom to throw on a soft black t-shirt and sweatpants; and he casts Yuuji one last glance before he makes his way out of the room and down the hall. He moves through the kitchen on autopilot, the familiar motions of filling the coffee machine and measuring out enough grounds for a strong roast. When the coffee is ready he pours two mugs, adding the ridiculous amount of sugar and milk that Yuuji prefers into one of them until the liquid turns pale; and then he carefully carries both mugs down the short hallway to their bedroom, where the air is still thick with the residual warmth of shared sleep and the heavier, sweeter notes of an omega hovering right on the edge of heat.

Yuuji is still clinging to sleep, one cheek mashed into the pillow so that the soft pink of his hair fans out in wild disarray across the cotton; and the sight of him lying there looking so thoroughly claimed by rest and comfort makes Megumi’s chest tighten with that familiar, almost painful sense of fondness that he still hasn’t figured out how to put into words after all this time. He sets the mugs down on the nightstand, careful not to place them near the edge; and then he sits down on the bed, the mattress dipping under his weight as he reaches out to brush a few errant strands of hair away from Yuuji’s forehead.

“Yuuji,” he says, the words low and gentle in the hush of the room. “Coffee. You need to get up.”

Yuuji makes a small, protesting noise in the back of his throat that is pure omega dissatisfaction, the sound vibrating with the same low purr that has been humming through his body all morning; and without opening his eyes he reaches blindly across the space between them until his fingers find the hem of Megumi’s shirt and tug with insistent, albeit sleepy, strength.

“Come back,” he groans into the pillow. “Miss you. It’s cold.”

“It’s not cold,” Megumi answers. Though even as the words leave his mouth he can already feel himself leaning closer, the thick sweetness of Yuuji’s sleep-warm skin and the richer undercurrent of approaching heat pulling at him like gravity – his own alpha instincts humming quietly in response to the way Yuuji’s scent has deepened overnight into something almost intoxicating. He brushes another strand of hair away from Yuuji’s forehead, carefully tucking it behind his ear. “And even if it was, I brought you coffee. Hot.”

“Don’t care about the coffee.” Yuuji’s eyes finally crack open, the gold of them hazy with sleep but full of the affection that seems to radiate from him in waves when he is like this; and the smile that curves his mouth is slow and devastatingly beautiful in the way it transforms the strong lines of his face into something soft and open and completely unguarded. “Care about you. C’mere.”

Megumi sighs, the sound more fond than truly exasperated, and lets himself be pulled down until he is half-sprawled across the solid plane of Yuuji’s chest. Yuuji’s arms wrap around him immediately; one hand slides up under the back of Megumi’s shirt to rest against the bare skin of his lower back, the touch warm and grounding and almost possessive in its intimacy, while the other begins carding through the dark mess of Megumi’s hair with lazy affection. The rumble starts back up at once, low and continuous and deep, vibrating through Yuuji’s ribcage and into Megumi’s own, and Megumi feels his eyes flutter shut against the overwhelming comfort of it.

“Coffee’s gonna get cold,” he warns after a moment of indulgence, though the words hold absolutely no conviction. “I’m not making more.”

“’M gonna drink it,” Yuuji mumbles. His fingers continue slowly moving through the strands of Megumi’s hair with the kind of absent-minded care that always makes Megumi feel like he is being claimed and cared for in the subtlest, most thorough way possible. “In a bit. After you let me hold you for five more minutes.”

“Five more minutes,” Megumi agrees, the tiniest hint of a smile curling his lips. He turns his head enough to press a soft, lingering kiss to the hinge of Yuuji’s jaw, the skin there heated and faintly scented with that same syrupy sweetness that has been filling the room all morning. Then he settles more fully against Yuuji’s chest, listening to the steady thrum of Yuuji’s contentment while the coffee cools on the nightstand and the morning light grows stronger through the curtains.

Five minutes stretches into ten, then fifteen, then for so long that Megumi stops keeping track – until finally that deep vibration in Yuuji’s chest softens into something quieter and Yuuji nuzzles his face against the top of Megumi’s head.

“Okay,” Yuuji mumbles, voice determined yet still thick with residual sleep and affection. “’M getting up.”

Megumi huffs out a quiet laugh in acknowledgment, and they sit up together in the soft tangle of sheets. He reaches for the mugs on the nightstand, passing the sugared one over with careful hands while keeping the stronger brew for himself. They drink in companionable silence, and he watches over the rim of his own mug as Yuuji takes slow, contented sips, those honeyed eyes remaining half-lidded and soft the entire time.

By the time they finally drag themselves out of bed the sun is properly up, painting long rectangles across the hardwood floors of the living room; and the apartment itself smells like coffee and home and the rich, overwhelming sweetness of Yuuji that has begun to saturate every corner of the space they share. Megumi starts the day the way he always does when they need to prepare for an upcoming cycle: he pads into the kitchen and opens the refrigerator to take careful stock of what they’ll need to pick up on their grocery run later, then checks the pantry as well with that same thoughtfulness.

Then Megumi actually starts to prepare breakfast, soft-cooked eggs over rice, and still Yuuji trails behind him all the while like a particularly clingy and affectionate shadow. Every time Megumi shifts or turns, Yuuji’s hand finds the small of his back, or the curve of his hip, or even the side of his neck – little grounding touches that keep the low, happy rumble going through the omega’s chest without pause.

After they eat, the rest of the morning drifts by in the kind of easy domestic quiet that still somehow feels new and precious even after so much time spent living together. Yuuji does the dishes while Megumi wipes down the counters, and every so often Yuuji will lean sideways just enough to press his shoulder against Megumi’s, or to rest his cheek briefly against the muscle of Megumi’s upper arm before returning to the soapy water with that same lovedrunk softness in his eyes. Once everything is clean, Megumi moves on to fold the laundry while Yuuji sits cross-legged on the couch and chatters about nothing in particular.

They make the quick grocery run around noon, the short walk to the corner store unfolding under a sky that has turned a lovely, inviting shade of blue; and Yuuji stays pressed close enough that their arms brush the entire time, his fingers occasionally finding Megumi’s and linking them together with that same absent-minded affection that seems to come so naturally to him. Megumi watches, heart overflowing, as Yuuji’s eyes remain half-lidded and a little unfocused even as they move through the familiar aisles of the store and gather what they need.

Over an hour later, after they’ve made the walk home and put the groceries away, Megumi finally gives in to the book that’s waiting for him on the coffee table: the one he has slowly been working through over the last week with its dense, carefully constructed prose. He settles into the corner of the L-shaped couch with the book open across his lap; the pages are cool beneath his fingertips, the weight of the book familiar and grounding, and he allows himself to sink into the simple pleasure of reading while the apartment remains filled with the soft sounds of Yuuji moving around somewhere nearby.

Less than five minutes pass before Yuuji abandons whatever he was doing across the room, and he crosses the space wordlessly to settle on the couch with Megumi. Megumi automatically lifts the book out of the way so Yuuji can climb into his lap, legs spread out along the cushions, one hand coming to rest over the steady beat of Megumi’s heart. He lets out a long, contented sigh that quickly turns into the beginnings of that familiar purr, his scent blooming richer and more insistent as he presses his body close.

“Read to me?” he asks, the words vibrating against Megumi’s sternum, full of a quiet hopefulness that’s impossibly endearing.

Megumi glances down at the soft pink mess of hair currently occupying most of his field of vision, then at the open page of the novel with its dense paragraphs and sparse dialogue. “It’s not exactly light reading,” he murmurs. “It can get kind of boring.”

“That’s okay.” Yuuji’s fingers curl into the fabric of Megumi’s shirt, flexing once, then twice. “Just wanna hear your voice. Please?”

There’s no real way to refuse that gentle, earnest tone – so Megumi adjusts the book so he can see the pages over the top of Yuuji’s head and then begins to read aloud. His voice is low and even, the same monotonous cadence he falls into when the words on the page demand careful attention; and almost immediately the rumble in Yuuji’s chest deepens into a steady, rolling purr. By the time Megumi reaches the end of the first page, Yuuji’s eyes have fallen shut, his body completely relaxed, and the only movement is the slow flex of his fingers in Megumi’s shirt and the unbroken thrum of his contentment. By the third page he is purring so loud that Megumi can feel it in his own ribs – a warm, living thing that fills his body and the entire living room with the depth of Yuuji’s happiness.

He keeps reading.

The story unfolds in his quiet voice, the afternoon light shifting across the floor as the minutes pass around them; and every now and then Yuuji makes a small, pleased sound in the back of his throat, or presses his face more firmly against Megumi’s chest as if he can somehow get closer than he already is. Megumi holds his thumb in the spine of the book to keep it balanced and open, and his free hand finds its way into Yuuji’s hair without conscious thought, fingers occasionally tugging gently at the soft strands and savoring the way the purr spikes in intensity every single time.

They stay like that for over an hour, until Megumi’s throat starts to feel dry and he finally sets the book aside with a soft sigh that carries more reluctance than he is willing to admit. Yuuji makes another protesting noise, low and whiny, and then nuzzles harder against Megumi’s chest as if the loss of the quiet voice he loves so dearly is a deeply personal betrayal.

“Don’t stop,” he complains, the words almost lost entirely in the continuous rumble still emanating from him.

“I need water,” Megumi says, though he makes no move to stand up. “And eventually we need to think about dinner. You have to eat.”

Yuuji leans back and lifts his head just enough to look at him, eyes warm and open and glassy, hair falling across his forehead in a messy curtain. “Five more minutes,” he pleads again, quieter this time, like he already knows the answer.

Megumi picks the book back up and keeps reading.

He lets the five minutes stretch into something longer and softer as he reads another few pages. Yuuji’s purring fills the space between them while the afternoon light continues its slow shift across the floor, until eventually the practical demands of the evening begin to outweigh even the quiet, secret pleasure of having Yuuji this soft and this clingy and this lost in the fog of approaching heat.

When they finally make it to the kitchen half an hour later, they shift into the familiar rhythms of dinner preparation. Megumi takes the lead in a way he usually leaves to Yuuji, the decision made without discussion as he begins pulling ingredients from the refrigerator and setting a cutting board down on the counter. Yuuji hovers at his shoulder the entire time, just as he did with breakfast, occasionally stealing a piece of whatever vegetable Megumi is chopping with unrepentant fingers and grinning that soft, dazed grin whenever Megumi shoots him a pointed look in response.

“You’re going to ruin your meal,” Megumi grumbles, though there’s no real heat in the words. “And you’re distracting me.”

“Too bad,” Yuuji hums around a biteful of carrot. “I like being close to you.” And then, as if the idea has only just occurred to him, he steps fully behind Megumi and wraps both arms around his waist – chin settling on Megumi’s shoulder, nose burying itself against the side of his neck directly over the marked scent gland there; and the contact sends a fresh shiver down the length of Megumi’s spine. The purring starts almost instantly, low and utterly content, and Megumi feels his hands still around the knife for a brief moment before he resumes chopping.

“Yuuji,” Megumi warns.

“Mmm.” Yuuji’s response is more a primal rumble than a true word, the sound vibrating against the sensitive skin of Megumi’s neck, and his arms tighten just enough to pull Megumi more firmly back against his chest. “Feels good. Smells good. Like home.”

Megumi’s ears are burning with a sudden heat, but he forces himself to continue chopping the vegetables with careful, measured strokes, hyper-aware of every point of contact: the broad solidity of Yuuji’s chest against his back, the tickle of pink hair along his jaw, the steady flex of Yuuji’s fingers between the fabric of his shirt over his stomach.

The purring never stops. It rises and falls with Yuuji’s breathing, a constant undercurrent of unfiltered satisfaction and love that makes Megumi’s alpha instincts want to preen even as he tries diligently to focus on not slicing his own fingers open.

“You’re gonna have to let go at some point,” Megumi says when he’s done with the vegetables. “Or I’ll end up burning something.”

“You won’t,” Yuuji murmurs against his neck, and Megumi suppresses the urge to shiver. “I trust you. You’re careful. Always careful with everything that matters.”

Something in Megumi’s chest blooms, sudden and bright and almost painful in its intensity. He sets the knife down carefully on the cutting board, rests both hands on the edge of the counter, and leans back into Yuuji’s encompassing hold – eyes closing against the bright light of the kitchen, head tilting back as he breathes in the combined scent of them. Yuuji’s purr deepens in appreciation, and for a long few minutes neither of them moves.

Eventually Megumi forces himself to finish preparing the rest of the ingredients; and Yuuji stays practically plastered to his back the entire time, only reluctantly relinquishing his hold when Megumi needs to move to the stove. Even then Yuuji stays close: perched on the counter next to him, feet swinging in a gentle rhythm, golden eyes glazed and attempting to follow Megumi’s every move. They talk while the food cooks, a conversation about nothing in particular, and every so often Yuuji reaches out and trails his fingers along the length of Megumi’s arm with that same lazy, affectionate touch he always seems to crave.

Dinner is simple but good enough, yakisoba because it’s one of Yuuji’s favorites, eaten at the small table with their knees pressed together underneath. By the time they finish the sky outside has turned into the deep violet of evening, and they clean up together with that same natural rhythm that has come to define so many of their shared days.

Shortly after, the two of them make their way to the bathroom together, and soon the shower is running hot and the mirror is fogging over. Yuuji reaches for the hem of Megumi’s shirt first, tugging it up and over his head with a soft, appreciative sound; and Megumi lets him, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth. Then he returns the favor with his usual quiet care until they’re both fully bare and the steam is curling around them like a second skin. The shower is just big enough for the two of them if they stand close – and they always do, the continuous contact of skin against skin an unspoken necessity that neither of them is willing to break.

Megumi reaches for the shampoo without being asked, and Yuuji’s eyes go soft and bright with anticipation. “C’mere,” he says, voice low under the soft rush of water.

Yuuji steps under the spray with him without hesitation, tipping his head back obediently so that Megumi can work the shampoo into the dampening strands of his hair. The moment Megumi’s fingertips begin to scratch along his scalp, the purr in Yuuji’s chest starts up again – loud enough to even be heard over the spray of the showerhead, and his eyes flutter shut on a long, shuddering breath, the enchanting sound of an omega who has finally found exactly the kind of careful attention he wants.

“Feels so good,” he mumbles, almost drunkenly. “Don’t stop.”

Megumi works the shampoo into his hair thoroughly, nails scraping just the way he knows Yuuji likes – and he watches, enraptured, as Yuuji’s whole body seems to melt under the touch, the way his hands come up to rest lightly against Megumi’s waist as if he needs the solid anchor to keep himself upright. The water runs hot over both of them, sluicing away the suds in rivulets that carry the combined scents of soap and Yuuji’s sweetened pheromones, an aroma so thick that Megumi feels almost dizzy with it. He rinses the shampoo out carefully, then reaches for the conditioner and works it through Yuuji’s hair with that same slow, deliberate care; and the entire time Yuuji’s purring never falters, never slows, a rolling soundtrack to the simple intimacy of the moment.

When they both step out of the shower, clean and flushed, Megumi grabs a towel and wraps it around Yuuji’s shoulders first, then wraps another one around his own hips. Yuuji immediately steps back into his space again, arms sliding around Megumi’s waist on instinct, face tucking against Megumi’s shoulder even though they’re both still dripping wet where they stand.

They dry off eventually, head to the bedroom to pull on comfortable clothes, and then drift back to the living room where the couch is undoubtedly waiting for them. Megumi settles into the corner cushion with the remote in hand, and Yuuji climbs back into his lap without hesitation, his torso curled against Megumi’s chest, face immediately seeking out that familiar, comforting spot against the side of Megumi’s neck.

“You’re not even going to pretend to watch, are you?” Megumi asks as he selects a movie, not even bothering to read the description.

“Nope.” Yuuji’s answer is muffled against his skin, words softened by the low, happy rumble still echoing throughout his chest. “Gonna stay right here and listen to you breathe and maybe hear about the movie if you feel like telling me.”

Megumi huffs out a quiet laugh and starts the film anyway.

The opening scene plays out across the screen, but most of his attention remains on the warm weight in his lap, the brush of Yuuji’s breath against his neck, and the soft rumbling that seems to settle something deep within his own chest. Every now and then, when something important happens in the movie, he leans down and murmurs the plot point against the top of Yuuji’s head, voice low and soft and private – and each time Yuuji’s purr deepens in response, as if the sound of Megumi’s voice alone is enough to keep him happy.

They stay like that through the entire movie. Yuuji never once looks at the screen. He simply exists in the circle of Megumi’s arms, face buried against his neck, hands opening and closing slowly in the fabric of his shirt. When the credits finally roll over two hours later, Megumi doesn’t move to get up right away; he sits there in the soft glow of the television, listening to the sound of omega bliss that he has somehow managed to earn just by existing in the same space.

And later that night, when they finally make their way back to the bedroom and settle under the covers together, Yuuji curls up against his side. He drapes one arm over Megumi’s waist, tucks his face into his shoulder once more – and the soft, sleepy version of that purr starts up within seconds of their bodies finding perfect alignment in the dark.

Megumi stares at the ceiling for a long time, feeling the steady rise and fall of Yuuji’s rumbling chest against his own; and he finds himself thinking that if there is anything better in the world than this, he has never found it.

And he wouldn’t want to find it even if he could.

Because Yuuji is purring. And it sounds like love.
