Work Text:
Rumi noticed the hat first, soft, white, slightly oversized, perched on their son’s head like a little crown. It made her laugh under her breath, a tiny sound that felt too small for the enormity of the moment. But maybe that was how miracles worked quietly, tenderly, without asking permission.
Zoey sat against the pillows, her face flushed with exhaustion but bright. Rumi had never seen her look more beautiful. Not on their wedding day, not on the night they decided to try for a baby, not even during the months when Zoey would rest Rumi’s hand on her belly and whisper, ‘He’s in there, Ru. He’s really in there’.
Now he was here. And Rumi couldn’t stop staring.
Their son made a soft sound, half sigh, half question, and Zoey instinctively shifted, soothing him with a gentle touch. Rumi felt her heart twist in a way she hadn’t known was possible.
“Oh my love you did it,” she whispered, her voice thick. “he's here.”
Zoey looked up, eyes shimmering.
“We did it,” she said. “Together.”
But Rumi shook her head, overwhelmed.
“No. You… you did everything. You brought him into the world. God, I’m so proud of you.” The words felt too small, too simple, but they were true in a way that made her chest ache.
Zoey’s smile was soft, tired, and radiant. “Come here.”
Rumi leaned in, getting impossibly closer, she could see every detail of their son’s face, the tiny nose, the delicate eyelashes, the way his mouth opened in a sleepy little O. She reached out, offering her finger, and when his hand curled around it, she felt something inside her settle into place. A new gravity. A new purpose.
“He’s perfect,” Zoey murmured.
“He’s ours,” Rumi said, and the truth of it felt like sunlight.
Zoey rested her head against Rumi’s shoulder.
“I love you,”.
Rumi closed her eyes for a moment, letting the words sink into her.
“I love you more than anything,” she said. “I… I didn’t know my heart could stretch this far.”
Zoey laughed softly.
“Mine feels like it’s doing somersaults.”
They sat like that for a long time, simply watching as their son breathed in tiny, steady rhythms, his presence impossibly small and impossibly huge at the same time.
“Seriously, though,” Zoey whispered, her voice cracking with a tired, giddy sort of mirth, “who knew babies came with hats? Is this a standard issue? Do they just come with them in the kit?” She let out a soft, breathy laugh that vibrated against Rumi’s shoulder, her eyes dancing as she looked down at the white knit fabric. It was a ridiculous thought, but in the haze of the recovery room, it felt like the funniest thing in the world.
The baby shifted, his hat wobbling just enough to make Zoey smile. Rumi felt her chest swell with more pride, Zoey had brought him into the world, and now he was here, tiny and perfect. She kissed Zoey’s temple. “Our little Myungsoo,” she murmured. “Hat and all.”
