July 19th 1959
The Cheers nearly flooded Rosemary’s ears that day. Their wedding day. The noise was almost deafening. Champaign Bottles were raised high in celebration. Rosemary thought her cheeks would get permanently sore from smiling so big that day. The sun covered the church and fields around, as if congratulating the pair for the celebration.
When they got out of the church, Rosemary would never forget the words Jack gave her, his glance towards her.
His smile, so bright like hers.
“I’ll always be there for you. For us.”
He held her hand tighter, a small reassurance of his words being true. Rosemary believed it then, how could she not?
June 11th 1974
Such a memory faded for a moment when Rosemary got startled at the sound of thunder. Lightening part of the home that was covered in darkness. The rain was pouring heavily. Rosemary could barely hear her own thoughts. She stayed by the door. Jack still wasn't home. It felt like eternity as she waited on the floor. She looked at the clock.
It was way past seven. Jack said he's back around seven.
Rosemary felt frustration and fear build in her gut. Why wasn't he home? Rosemary looked at the darkness from the kitchen, it looked at her, felt like it was laughing at her.She quickly stood and went to the phone. Picking it up and her finger mashed hard against the numbers on the dial, calling, she prayed.
Each time, his number went to voicemail. She tried, she tried so many times she lost count and slammed the phone down, she felt her chest tighten and she felt like she couldn’t breathe. Her head was pounding. She sat against the wall, just waiting for a call from Jack. Telling her he was coming back home soon, she needed him to come home.
‘Jack, please. I can't do this alone.’
she gave a glance to the windows, for a moment, she saw something. Rosemary stood and ran over to the window. Her eyes glancing, her eyes peeking. maybe her mind was playing tricks with her again.
she swore she saw something, she wasn't thinking but she rushed to the door and opened it.
A hunched shadow figure was approaching, a stranger almost. Their movements clumsy and limping towards the house. It looked like they were descending from the thick forests. the closer they got, the more rosemary could make out the appearance. She stood there, in the doorway, frozen and still. The cold air hitting her face, almost paralyzing her.
Her eyes widened and shaky breaths came out from her chest.
”Jack!”
She nearly bolted from the front door and to the cold and hard rain outside.
Sophie couldn't sleep, the Thunder always unsettled her in the night. The house felt almost alive. Sometimes she wondered if the slight shadows she saw moving were just from her mind. It used to give her no worry back then. Now it terrified her. She used to go to Rosemary all the time.
She slowly stood up, setting Mr.Snow aside from her on the bed. A late night snack didn't sound so bad right now. Silently Checking up on her mother also sounded like a good idea. These past few weeks have been pretty hard on her, she hasn't been herself. Sophie knows why, it still hurts knowing. Opening her door and heading towards the hall, she stopped.
Sophie could hear commotion coming from downstairs, the sound of her mother’s frantic voice, and a little bit of her dad’s, it was hard to tell, she quickly made her way downstairs, wanting to know if something happened. She hadn't heard such panicked noises in the house since that night Edd and Molly were gone and Jack kept calling and yelling for Felix to pick up.
Sophie continued on then stopped again at the stair case, her eyes traveling from one spot to another, then to her Father.
‘Dad doesn't look so good.’
He was on the couch, laid across, trying to breathe. rosemary by his side, on her knees, her hands frankly trying to stop bleeding, or find the source of it. Her mother’s pale hands are now covered in deep red. Rosemary’s panicked voice made Sophie flinch.
“Jack! Jack, can you hear me!? What happened to you!? Oh my god, there's blood on you everywhere!”
Rosemary said in a panic, her voice nearly becoming in a crack as she tried not to let tears strong, but they did anyway. Sophie felt frozen, she stood there for a minute, her chest tightening. The way Jack barely responded to Rosemary, how stiff he looked before he managed to breath a few times.
”o-oh, God..”
Rosemary let out a shaky sob, her body nearly trembling at seeing how Jack looked, how he barely responded.
‘Was he going to die?’ The thought raced in Sophie’s mind. She managed a weak step forward before managing to find her voice.
”Mom?”
Rosemary froze, she stopped focusing on Jack just for a second and her head practically snapped towards Sophie, seeing her daughter there frozen.
Her poor daughter. her child was just standing there afraid, she shouldn't have to see any of this.
“Sweetie…Look away!- your father-..” Rosemary choked on her own words, and she looked back to jack, then to her bloody hands, as if not even knowing what to say or do.
“Your father’s okay…don't worry, he's okay.”
She said those words in a hurry she wasn't even sure she believed them, Sophie clearly didn’t believe either, her father practically looking half dead. Rosemary felt her teeth clench, she had to stop thinking, jack was bleeding, he could die if she took too long, sitting here. She got up, trying to wipe the blood off her yellow sweater.
its yellow color fading and now a stained red on her clothing. She searched his pockets, finding his keys and immediately trying to lift Jack up.
“Sophie, get a jacket.”
Sophie just immediately ran up the stairs, heading to her closet to find any Sweater or jacket laying around. She felt like she couldn't breathe.
It felt worse in the car. Rosemary was trying not to speed, her eyes worried looking at the rear view mirror every few minutes to see Jack. Her fingers shook as she tried to drive without practically slamming into anything.
The heavy rain pouring down into the windshield made it hard to focus and Rosemary nearly pushed her foot down on the pedal. Sophie, meanwhile, was trying to keep her father steady in the backseat. Rosemary was scared she wouldn’t be able to keep him stable, unfortunately leaving Sophie to try and keep her father laying back against the seat, blood getting everywhere nearly made Sophie feel Nauseous.
It felt like a blur, but the lights in the hospital were blinding. Now the aftermath was all kicking in, Sophie was on one of the seats. Blood slowly drying on her clothes. Rosemary sat beside her, face buried in the bloodied hands of her own. Sophie’s eyes wandered, from the hospital walls to her mother. For a moment, she could picture Rosemary like a doll with how still she was. With how she wasn’t breathing.
Sophie felt shaky, but she managed to speak.
“Mom?”
Rosemary flinched. She took a long exhale before she turned her head. Seeing Sophie, her eyes softened.
Her daughter sitting there, practically curled up almost in the seat, hugging her knees. She almost forgot her train of thought, if she was even thinking.
“Is dad going to be okay?”
Sophie managed to ask. Her shoulders went up, as if to brace for an harsh answer perhaps that Jack wasn’t going to make it. Rosemary stared at Sophie.
She stared at Sophie for a long while, it almost felt uncomfortable. Rosemary finally turned her gaze back to the wall and her shoulders dropped a little.
“I-..Don’t know.”
Rosemary said, her eyes blinked tiredly, drifting to the whiteness of the walls, noticing the details more. Her eyes almost got lost in them, before she tiredly blinked again, she began to feel a little better, the nurses were taking care of him, he should be fine.
“They're making sure he’s okay right now Sophie. That’s all that matters.”
Sophie wasn’t sure if she should buy it or expect the worst to happen the next second. She only turned her attention on the floor instead, she held her knees a little closer, it felt cramped on the small chair she sat on. Everything became fuzzy around her, the people walking by. Doctors, nurses maybe. The lights occasionally flickering. She felt her body tense. ‘Please, let Dad be okay.’
She nearly closed her eyes at the thought. hoping if she thought about it hard enough, it would come true the next second. Sophie looked at her mother one more time. Seeing those exhausted eyes, she laid her head on Rosemary’s shoulder, closing her eyes at an attempt to sleep. She could feel Rosemary tense. Rosemary didn’t move.
Then Sophie felt the light touch of her mother’s dirtied and soaked arm around her shoulder, a weak pull to let Sophie get close. Sophie wondered if her mother closed her eyes too.
Sophie let sleep take her away, she barely heard the footsteps of someone approaching her and Rosemary. Rosemary’s body felt less still, obviously giving the certain someone attention as they talked. Clearly a doctor. Sophie didn’t open her eyes. She couldn’t but she could barely make out the words.
“..He’ll pull through.”
At those few words, Sophie felt like her mother’s side was less heavy, more relaxed. Sophie felt herself fully sink into sleep after that. The cold air in the hospital became less bothersome to Sophie.
Hospital visits were frequent after that, Sophie just remembered the small details the doctors would tell Rosemary every so often. That he’d be able to “Bounce” back. Rosemary didn’t leave Jack’s side, she was asleep of course, hours by Jack’s side when they were able to visit. Her head was placed on his chest, chair scooted forward and eyes closed. Listening to Jack’s heart felt like the only thing to ground her from losing it.
Sophie would just hold Mr.Snow close when they’d visit, and once, when she lifted her eyes, she could see Jack’s eyes open.
Jack’s eyes blinked weakly, his eyes looking at Sophie. Sophie felt frozen. Tears dripped from her eyes when Jack smiled at her, she got a bit closer, the sight of her father awake making her relieved. She didn’t even process how much she cried.
His bandaged hand patted her on her head weakly. It was soothing for her in its own way, just like how he would do it back then.
“Don’t cry Sophie.”
Jack said, his voice said hoarse. Sophie wondered if it was due to yelling or screaming.
“I’m here now.”
Sophie could only manage a sniffle, before stepping a bit closer to her dad’s hospital bed. Standing by a sleeping Rosemary.
The house still felt so quiet since Jack’s arrival back from the Hospital. The doctors said he had to take it easy. Sophie would watch as Rosemary would help Jack around the house. It felt weird seeing her father, who looked strong before, look so exhausted. Bandages covering him, from his stomach to hands.
Jack stared up at the ceiling. The sunlight slowly shining in, like the days before were just a nightmare slowly washing away, albeit slowly. Blanket over his chest. His frown felt more apparent than usual.
He hates this. He hates all of it.
He was supposed to be the protector of the family. He nearly lost his life. It shouldn’t have happened in the first place.
Jack sat up, his body immediately aching in protest to the movement. Thoughts racing, racing back to the stormy rainy night. His hair falling softly in front of his face as he felt his head lower into his hands. Thinking of that thing, the monster that was that animatronic that came to life. the pain.
The attack, it almost felt like his body had been twisted, all he could remember was the pain.
It felt so humiliating, staying in that hospital bed. Rosemary clinging to him, and poor Sophie, looking so scared.
He couldn’t fix anything.
How could he have failed them both this bad?
Such thoughts were interrupted when a soft knock came to the door. Jack immediately adjusted his shirt collar up and pushed his hair back a little to appear more "Presentable" despite practically being in critical condition and recovering. He was in his own home yet he still felt he needed to paint his own picture as always strong and never weak.
Sophie entered slowly, peeking in with a slight timidness.
“Dad?”
She entered slowly, holding a plate of scrambled eggs.
“Mom wanted me to bring this to you.”
Sophie said, her eyes looking down to the plate before back at Jack. Jack's eyes widened a little bit. He was a little taken off guard that Rosemary had cooked breakfast it seemed. Rosemary was still dealing with the grief of Edd and Molly’s deaths. Jack looked at Sophie, before a small smile took his lips. He tried to sit up more, gesturing for Sophie to come closer.
Sophie immediately went over, holding the plate of eggs till Jack managed to slowly take them from Sophie’s hands, and place it weakly on his lap. Jack looked at Sophie and tried to speak casually.
“Your mother made breakfast?”
Sophie nodded, looking happy about it, it meant Rosemary was feeling a little more energetic, staying out of the Artroom. It didn't mean she was fully recovered, but it was better than the usual day.
“Mom burnt one of the eggs. I felt bad for her so I ate it to make her feel better.”
Sophie said, feeling a little better. Rosemary still wasn’t herself but, seeing her mother smile at her weakly, even at the price of eating a burnt egg, made it worth it. Jack couldn’t help the small chuckle that almost left his lips. The morning almost felt right. He would’ve begun eating, till Sophie asked something that made him freeze.
“Are you going back to work after you feel better?”
Sophie said. She didn’t want Jack to go back to work, Rosemary was starting to look a little better, at least gaining some energy. Him going back to work could cause Everything to go back to how it was the past two months before his incident. Sophie didn’t want that. She looked desperate at her father, hoping for a clear answer. Deep down she knew she wouldn’t get one.
Jack averted his eyes, just thinking. Deep in thought.
He finally looked back at Sophie, his mind already made up but looking at Sophie. He softened a little.
“No.”
He said. Jack reached over and ruffled Sophie’s hair, she immediately gave him an annoyed look she always gave whenever he did it to her, even when she was little. It nearly made him smile again.
“I’ll stay here with you and your mother for a little bit. Just..don’t worry about that right now okay?”
Jack said. He winced, a little surprised the next second when Sophie suddenly gave him a hug. Despite the ache in his body at the sudden contact.
Jack let out a soft sigh, letting his daughter hug him for a little bit. His hand slowly wrapped around her back, a small rub. A small gesture to comfort Sophie.
“Okay kid, I gotta eat my breakfast before it gets cold, and you don’t want to put pressure on the bandages either.”
Jack said, not wanting his injuries to get worse, Sophie slowly let go, a little guilty for making her father’s injuries hurt from her hug.
“Sorry.”
Sophie backed a little away to give him space. Jack looked at the plate, then he smiled a little, a genuine smile. Looking at the plate of the eggs. She raised an eyebrow, not understanding why her father was looking at the plate of eggs with a weird look.
“What?”
Jack huffed, he looked at Sophie, a small gesture to the plate of eggs.
“I don’t think eating eggs with my hands would be the best for me right now.”
Sophie immediately felt embarrassed, she forgot to get him a fork. She immediately went off, leaving the room, leaving the door slightly open as she immediately went downstairs to fetch him a fork. Jack just smiled on her way out. His smile faded a little as his gaze left the door and went to the window.
He couldn’t risk his family getting any more hurt right now.
He needed to get them away from here. Something is already forming in his mind. A new plan, as much as it slightly angered him to do.
Jack spent more time at home, keeping his word, despite the house feeling a bit more lively. Sophie still couldn't sleep as well. Her eyes looked at the window. The moon rising high, slightly covered in clouds. The home might’ve been better now, but it wasn’t as bright as it once was. Sophie wondered if it ever would.
Carefully, Sophie stood from her bed, she looked at Mr.Snow. Mr.Snow looked back at her, that usually emotionless smile, and she sighed, deciding to leave Mr.Snow there. She went downstairs, her steps careful to try not to cause as much noise. She went to the TV and turned it on. Sophie felt a bit relieved to see Carol Brunette on at this hour.
She sat down on the couch and watched for a while, she didn’t even hear the footsteps of someone approaching from behind, for a moment she thought she saw a white figure glowing and reflecting on the TV before she looked behind and all she saw was her mother, standing there behind the couch.
Rosemary looked down at Sophie, tired. Though Sophie swore she saw a little bit of light still in her eyes,
“What are you doing awake at this hour Sweetie?”
Rosemary asked, clear exhaustion in her voice, she clearly didn’t get sleep either and heard Sophie downstairs, with the TV on. Sophie looked at Rosemary before her eyes fell back to the TV screen, watching carol brunette.
“..i couldn’t sleep..”
Sophie admitted, hearing her mother move, she thought she was going to head back upstairs and Sophie didn’t want to be left alone, it just felt weird right now to be.
“Can you stay?”
Sophie almost curled up at the thought of seeing that white glowing figure on the TV again, it almost looked like the one in her dream, like the angel. Having her mother beside her felt better than being here in the darkness now that she thought about it.
“I don’t want to be alone.”
Rosemary froze, she looked at Sophie. Jack was still sleeping upstairs, he’s been more exhausted since his injuries. Her eyes went to the stairs the next second. She didn’t want to leave Jack alone, but he was feeling better lately. Sophie needed her too. Jack’s presence in the home in itself made her feel a bit more at ease so she stepped forward, and then gently sat down beside Sophie on the couch.
Both stared at the TV, Sophie with her pajamas still on, and Rosemary with her unbrushed hair but she’d was in a loose white shirt this time, instead of the yellow sweater she had most of the time.
Sophie looked over to Rosemary.
“Why are you awake Mom?”
Sophie asked, a small attempt to make conversation with Rosemary, now that she saw her less in the artroom now. Rosemary eyes drifted away. She still didn't sleep well, and watching Jack sleep unfortunately took up most of the night. A silent comfort that drained her energy. Just wanting to make sure he was breathing.
Rosemary looked at her hands.
“I was…taking care of your father. Just worried for him,”
Rosemary admitted. It got quiet again, both Sophie and Rosemary looking at the TV. Eyes focused. Sophie looked over at her mother. A small frown on her face and a lingering question on her mind that she slightly felt she shouldn’t ask.
“..are you feeling better?”
Rosemary felt herself go still, her eyes squinting as she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The sight made Sophie nervous. Rosemary opened her eyes again, feeling more exhausted than usual, and she looked at Sophie. She fully looked at Sophie.
The heaviness of everything and the sorrow still linger on her. It still makes her feel tired. She still feels angry. Angry at Felix. She wants to cry. Though her shoulders drop with a sigh, she doesn’t think she can lie to Sophie right now, but she still tries to make Sophie feel reassured.
“I think I will be, soon.”
Sophie just gives her mother a blank stare and Rosemary just gives a downcast glance. The answer is enough to sooth her, maybe them both. She leans over and lays her head on her mother’s shoulder. Just like at the hospital that night. Rosemary looks at the screen. Her eyes feel even more heavier.
She slowly lays her head against Sophie’s. An arm slowly reaching over and pulling Sophie closer.
The TV still plays and it’s getting late but Rosemary can’t be bothered to get up at this point. Sophie feels a little relieved, feeling her mother’s comfort for now.
Sophie looked down at the journal on her bed, sitting across from it. Jack had suggested it, when he started to be able to walk without much assistance, he handed her the journal. It was old but fresh and not used.
She flipped open a page and began to write with a spare pencil. She thought for a moment. She was sure she didn’t have anything in her mind for minutes till she finally began to write.
7/5/74
Dad is feeling better now. He’s beginning to walk. Dad said a journal might help get things off my mind. He even said mom had one. I don’t know if I’ll put much into this. I never really had a Diary.
Sophie stopped writing, letting out a sigh, with a tap on her paper with her pencil. The sound of slight yelling made her flinch and looked at the wall, hearing the slight muffled voices of Rosemary and Jack from their bedroom, Sophie's eyes fell a bit, before she went back to writing.
Dad and Mom have been having a lot of conversations lately, I think it has to do with his work. He’s been staying home more. I wonder if he’ll go back. I don’t think he will.
We sat outside for the fireworks last night, it was a good time, Mom smiled and so did Dad. I think I smiled too. Dad wasn’t so happy about the Bon’s burger commercial that played for 4th of July. Mom asked me to turn the TV off, said it made dad upset, she looked upset too.
I wish they’d tell me what’s going on, I’m about to turn 14.
Sophie remembered. Her dad’s smile. how much brighter her mom smiled that night when the fireworks went off. Jack convinced them to go outside to see them. It felt soothing. It felt warmer that night than it’s been since summer started.
Though those smiles became frowns when Sophie turned on the TV to watch cartoons once it was getting a little chilly and they had gone back inside.
Bon’s burger played for the 4th of July. Jack didn’t look at the TV, didn’t look at Sophie. Eyes distant, Rosemary immediately told Sophie to turn it off, with how quick she did, Sophie almost got scared.
Sophie looked back at her journal and sighed, her hand felt tired and she closed it slowly before setting it aside. That felt like enough for the day, especially when she heard her mother call out.
“Sophie! Come help me make dinner.”
Sophie's eyes lightened a bit, and she got up and headed downstairs. Rosemary was beginning to make dinners like she used to. It made Sophie feel like things were getting better.
. . .
Sophie almost hurried upstairs, her eyes blank and wide, she looked at her journal. Her hands halting before she picked it up and sat down on her bed, immediately picking her pencil up.
7/17/74
Mom says we’re moving. She said it during dinner today. We have dinner earlier now.
I don’t know what to feel about it.
Sophie’s eyes look up from her journal, eyes tracing her room, every detail of it.
Dad said he’s not working with uncle Felix anymore. Says he is finding a new job somewhere else and we’ll have to move.
Sophie felt her grip tighten on the pencil more she wrote, she looked at the door. Hearing Rosemary and Jack talking. Maybe about the move too.
Sophie felt her breathing pick up, before her shoulders fell a little.
I don’t want to leave.
I like my room.
Maybe Edd and Molly are here.
I don't hate it, but it just feels strange, to leave this place, I can’t picture living somewhere else. Mom also looked hurt, like she doesn’t want to leave. I hate this.
Sophie heard a sound from outside her bedroom window, she slowly got up and went to it, peeking outside. She saw Rosemary dumping out a lot of stuff that looked like they belonged in the art room. A lot of figurines. Sophie's eyes widened as she kept watching, though being careful as she saw her mother dump it all in the back yard. Stepping on the pieces and destroying it. her stomps get a bit more harsh.
Rosemary’s shoulders tensed and she saw her mother’s head fall a bit, like her mother was going to cry. Her mother stood there for a few minutes before walking back inside the house. Sophie stepped away from the window, and sat back on her bed. She looked at Mr.Snow, eyebrows a bit furrowed.
It seemed they were saying goodbye to this place, to their home to make a new one.
She still didn’t like it, it seemed maybe her mother didn’t either. She picked Mr.Snow up and held the bear close, as she sat in the silence of her room. Her birthday was coming up as well.
Sophie blinked twice when she felt her name being called.
“Sophie?”
She looked over, seeing Rosemary waiting by Jack’s car. Jack was currently stuffing little stuff they had now into the trunk. The house had been emptied slowly by the furniture. Jack said he already had a home found in the next city. Sophie just felt more unease build in her gut. New place, new school, new life.
She wasn’t sure what to make of it.
She took a final glance to the house, before going over to where her mother was, standing by her.
Rosemary had tried putting something more vibrant for today, a light blue button up shirt. She tied her hair today, Sophie noticed. Rosemary took a glance at their house too. Hurt formed in her eye before she looked away. Looking more at the place might make her never want to leave.
She tried to smile at Sophie.
“We best be going, your father’s waiting for us to get in the car.”
Sophie watched as Rosemary opened the car door to the back seats, Sophie got in. Sophie felt some reassurance that her mother didn’t want to leave either. Made her feel less alone. Jack finally got into the car, once everyone was buckled. He began to start the car and drove off. Sophie took a glance to the back mirror of the car.
The house fading away as they drove off. Sophie took one more glance, eyebrows furrowed a little. She wondered if Edd and Molly were there. Watching them leave.
She tried to picture it in her mind, them waving their small hands at them. both holding each other to try and comfort each other as they watched their family leave them behind.
Sophie sat straight again, facing forward, trying not to picture it. Rosemary looked over to Sophie, a smile on her lips. Sophie could see it was a bit forced.
“Are you hungry sweetheart? We can stop by a gas station and get something small for the road.”
Sophie gave a small shrug, she didn’t really feel hungry but after a moment. Nodded, immediately she felt herself craving a Ding dong. She hadn't had one since early in the year and it just came back to her. Especially with Rosemary not wanting her to eat too many sweets, though that rule applied to all of them, Her and Edd and Molly.
With the small road bumps hit as Jack drove, Sophie looked out the window, thoughts still bouncing around her head. She wondered what would become of Bon’s burgers. What would become of Uncle Felix.
“…where are we staying then?”
Sophie asked, her hands slightly gripping her lap. Rosemary and Jack both stayed silent. With a small glance towards Jack, she could see Jack’s hands gripping the steering wheel a little. Rosemary was the first, her head turning to Sophie.
“..Your Father found a small apartment we’ll be able to afford for a while.”
Rosemary looked back at the windshield. She felt hurt every time the car passed the trees, more away from their home, but she clenched her fists tight. This was for their good, for their safety. This was for Jack’s safety.
Jack also looked torn to leave the home they’ve made so many good memories in, but after that night, he couldn’t risk it.
He had to protect them. That meant leaving behind His work, his home and his dreams of the entirety of Bon’s Burgers. All the progress and work he’s done with Felix, washed away.
Due to that one night.
Jack focused on the road again, he couldn’t face looking sad right now. He wanted Sophie and Rosemary to feel better about all of this, so if that meant he had to put on a smile for them, he would. Just to keep them afloat. From the glance of his windshield, he could see Sophie looking a little down, looking at the passing trees too. Her frustrated expression was more obvious than her Mother’s.
“Sophie, please don’t look like that.”
Jack said, in his attempt to cheer Sophie up, she managed to lift her attention to Jack at least.
“I know the move will be hard, but if things go smoothly, I’ll move us somewhere better.”
Jack said, smiling at the thought of owning a house similar to their old one now. Sophie rested her head against the car door.
“Hey, Cricket, I heard the apartment area has a pool, you could go in with your mother to cool off before it starts getting cold again.”
Jack said, rosemary eyes slightly seemed interested at the idea of going to the pool, maybe spending time with Sophie again. Sophie looked at Jack, also attentive but gave a shrug, she’s never liked swimming a lot.
He pulled into a gas station. Sophie’s eyes drifted to the window. Rosemary looked through her purse for some spare money to buy Sophie something, maybe a small beverage too. Jack pulled out from his wallet a Twenty dollar bill, handing it to Rosemary.
He whispered softly to Rosemary so Sophie wouldn’t hear. “Don’t take too long.” And a small quick kiss to Rosemary. Rosemary nodded before getting out of the car and opening the door for Sophie, Sophie got out and Rosemary gently tried to hold Sophie’s hand. Sophie huffed but held her mother’s hand as they walked into the gas station, earning a smile from Rosemary.
Sophie looked back at Jack when they walked in, seeing him filling the tank of the car. Sophie just followed Rosemary inside, her eyes immediately falling to the small aisle where the candies and snacks were.
Things still didn’t seem quite right but It was getting a little better for all of them.
