Work Text:
The Caribbean sun beats down on the deck of the vessel, casting a harsh, unblinking glare across the salt-stained fiberglass. Somewhere miles behind them, John B and Big John are charting their own course back toward North Carolina, but on this boat, the silence is thick enough to choke on. The engine hums a low, persistent frequency, vibrating through the soles of Pope’s beat-up sneakers as he leans against the stern railing.
Every breath of salt air feels heavy, weighted by the sheer exhaustion of the past few days. Beside him, JJ shifts his weight, his shoulder brushing against Pope’s. It is not an accident. It is never an accident anymore. The subtle contact sends a quiet charge straight down Pope’s spine, a grounding wire in the middle of all this chaos.
A few yards away, Kiara sits near the bow, her arms crossed tight against her chest, her eyes fixed on the dynamic between them. Her gaze is sharp, tracking the way JJ’s knee knocks against Pope’s, the way Pope’s hand twitches like he wants to reach out and pull JJ closer. There is a hot, prickling tension radiating off her—a mix of sting, betrayal, and total confusion. She picks at a thread on her denim shorts, her jaw set so hard her cheekbones stand out sharp under the tropical light.
Cleo notices. She always notices. Sliding away from the controls, Cleo ambles over to where Kiara is stewing, leaning back against the gunwale with an easy, fluid grace that contrasts sharply with Kiara’s coiled posture. "You're gonna burn a hole right through 'em if you keep staring like that, Kie," Cleo says softly, her accent rolling warm over the sea breeze.
Kiara swallows hard, looking away toward the horizon. "I'm not staring."
"Right. And the sun rises in the west," Cleo replies, a small, knowing smile touching her lips before her tone softens into something real. "It’s hard, isn't it? Watching things shift when you’re still trying to figure out where you stand."
Kiara lets out a breath that sounds half like a laugh and half like a choke. "It’s just... everything is changing so fast. First JJ, then... God, Rafe." She shudders, the memory of Rafe's betrayal just forty-eight hours ago still raw and bleeding. "I actually thought—for a second—there was a human being inside him. And he just burned us. Again. I don't know who to trust anymore, Cleo. I feel like I'm holding onto air."
Cleo leans in, her shoulder bumping Kiara's gently. "Rafe is a snake because that’s what he chose to be. Don't let his sickness ruin your vision of the people who actually bleed for you. Look at JJ. Look at Pope. JJ’s heart has always been a messy thing, Kie. But it’s loyal. He and Pope... they’ve been holding each other up while the whole world was tearing down. That ain't a threat to you. That's just love trying to survive."
Kiara looks back toward the stern. She watches Pope reach out, his fingers lightly resting on the small of JJ’s back, guiding him away from the wind toward the shadowed side of the small cabin. She takes a long, slow breath, feeling the jagged edges of her jealousy slowly dulling into understanding.
"Yeah," Kiara murmurs, wiping a stray trace of salt from her cheek. "Yeah, okay."
In the narrow, shaded nook beside the cabin door, out of direct sight, the air is still and thick with heat. JJ leans back against the wall, his chest heaving slightly. His lungs have been weak, raw from smoke and salt water and too many panic-filled sprints, but his eyes are steady as they fix on Pope.
"You good, man?" Pope asks, his voice barely a whisper, searching JJ's face with intense, focused care.
"Never better, Poguelandian," JJ breathes, a fragile, lopsided smile tugging at his lips.
Pope doesn't hesitate. He steps into JJ's space, closing the distance between them entirely. When his mouth meets JJ's, it is soft at first—a delicate, reverent question—before deepening into something desperate and true. JJ lets out a low sound in the back of his throat, his hand shooting up to knot into the collar of Pope's shirt, pulling him closer, anchoring himself to the only solid thing in his world. They kiss with the weight of everything they've lost and everything they're terrified to lose. Pope’s hands frame JJ’s jaw, thumb tracing the hot skin of his cheekbone. JJ kisses back hard, pouring every ounce of his chaotic, restless spirit into the contact.
After a long moment, JJ’s breathing grows shallow, a ragged gasp catching in his chest as his sensitive lungs struggle to keep up with the exertion and the heat. A wave of lightheadedness washes over him, making his knees buckle just a fraction. Pope senses it instantly. He breaks the kiss, sliding his arms under JJ’s shoulders to support his weight, holding him secure against the cabin wall.
"Whoa, whoa," Pope whispers against JJ's temple, his own heart hammering. "Breathe, J. I got you. I'm right here."
JJ rests his forehead against Pope’s shoulder, his eyes fluttering shut as he draws in slow, careful lungfuls of air. The dizziness swirls, but beneath it is a profound, unshakable calm. He doesn't panic. He doesn't pull away. He just lets Pope hold him, trusting him completely with his breath, his body, and his heart as the boat carries them forward into the unknown.
