Chapter Text
Silence had weight.
Ichigo discovered that sometime after sunrise, when he found himself sitting on a broken stretch of wall outside the Fourth Division's temporary ward and listening for an enemy who was no longer there.
Soul Society had not gone quiet when Yhwach fell. It groaned. Timber shifted under collapsed roofs. Hammers rang from one end of Seireitei to the other. Orders traveled through streets that no longer looked like streets, and every few minutes someone hurried past carrying medicine, clean bandages, water, or another name to be added to a list.
Still, beneath all of it, there was an absence where the war had been. Ichigo did not trust it yet.
He rested his forearms on his knees and watched a pale gold dome shimmer behind the torn screens of the ward.
Orihime held both hands above the ruined flesh, her fingers trembling inside the pale gold light. "Soten Kisshun. I reject."
Orihime's voice was soft with exhaustion. The light around the injured Shinigami brightened anyway.
She had been saying the same words since they returned from the Royal Palace. Sometimes over wounds Ichigo could barely look at. Sometimes over injuries the Fourth Division healers had already declared beyond their ability to repair. Each time the six petals rose at her call. Each time the impossible happened a little more slowly than it had the time before.
The barrier faded.
Hanataro bent over the patient, checked his breathing, and waited through one long, uncertain second.
The tension finally left Hanataro's shoulders. "His pulse is stable." Wonder warmed his exhausted face when he looked at Orihime. "Inoue-san, you did it."
Orihime lowered her aching hands and smiled as if Hanataro's relief could restore her too. "I'm glad." Her eyes were already searching the ward behind him. "Is there someone else?"
Ichigo was on his feet before Hanataro could answer, his weight already shifting between Orihime and the waiting beds. "There isn't."
Both of them looked at him.
Hanataro's eyes moved toward the row of waiting beds behind him. An apologetic crease appeared between his brows. "Kurosaki-san, there are actually-"
"Someone else can take the next one." Ichigo stepped through the torn screen and planted himself in front of Orihime. Up close, the shadows beneath her eyes were worse. Her hair was tied back with a strip of white cloth, and a smear of dried blood marked one sleeve. It was not hers.
He had checked twice. His expression hardened as if that could make her obey. "You're taking a break."
"I only need a little water." Orihime raised both hands between them, displaying her palms as though their trembling could be negotiated away.
Ichigo caught one wrist before she could hide it in her sleeve.
Orihime blinked down at the hand around her wrist, then up at the tension in his face. "Kurosaki-kun?"
Ichigo turned her hand palm-up. The small tremor traveled visibly through her fingers. "You're shaking."
She wiggled those fingers for him and summoned a fragile smile. "Only a tiny bit. Maybe they're celebrating because we won."
He stared at her.
Her smile lost some of its confidence beneath his stare. One finger curled toward her palm. "A very quiet celebration?"
His grip eased, but the set of his mouth did not. "Sit down, Inoue."
Hanataro, who possessed excellent survival instincts whenever Ichigo used that tone, found urgent work on the other side of the ward.
Orihime let herself be guided outside. Ichigo released her wrist only after she sat on the wall, then handed her the cup of water he had been saving. She drank half of it without pausing. That should have made him feel better. The relief he expected never came.
Ichigo nudged the cup closer when she lowered it, watching to make sure she did not hide the remaining half. "You should sleep."
Orihime tipped the cup toward the pillar where he had spent the night. "So should you."
His shoulders drew back in immediate defense. "I slept."
Her gaze traveled deliberately to the pillar and returned to him. "Kurosaki-kun, closing your eyes while sitting upright for eleven minutes isn't sleeping."
Ichigo frowned at the exact number, suspicion briefly overtaking concern. "Were you timing me?"
Orihime's fingers went still around the cup. "I was worried." She met his eyes so openly that the rest of his argument vanished.
Orihime held the cup between both hands. Her gaze traveled beyond the courtyard to the broken white walls, the tilted roofs, and the distant scar where whole streets had been torn from the ground. In the new sunlight, everything looked too clear.
Her thumb traced the chipped rim of the cup while she watched another stretcher disappear behind the torn screens. "There are so many people. Every time I finish, I think I should do one more."
Ichigo angled his head until he could catch her lowered gaze. "And after that one?"
Orihime's eyes returned to the ward. Her answer barely disturbed the morning air. "One more."
A muscle shifted in Ichigo's cheek. "That's the problem."
"I know." Her smile was small now, without any attempt to make him laugh, and her shoulders curved beneath the weight of that knowledge. "But knowing doesn't make it easier to walk away."
Ichigo looked at the hands curled around her cup. Those hands had held a shield between him and Yhwach. They had restored Tensa Zangetsu after the blade shattered. They had reached for him in a place where the sky itself had been remade by someone else's will.
He had asked too much of those hands already. Ichigo leaned forward just enough to block her view of the ward. "Then don't walk away. Just sit here for twenty minutes."
Orihime glanced sideways at him, one eyebrow lifting. "Twenty?"
He raised three fingers without the faintest hint of apology. "Thirty."
Her mouth twitched despite her exhaustion. "That went in the wrong direction."
Ichigo folded his arms, settling into the threat. "Keep arguing and it'll be an hour."
Her laugh was tired, but real. It loosened something in his chest that had been clenched since the final battle. Orihime shifted on the wall to make room beside her. "All right. Thirty minutes. But you have to sit too."
Ichigo braced one hand against the wall as though his position were self-evident. "I'm already sitting."
She pointed the cup at the place he had just vacated. "You stood up."
His brows pulled together, but he lowered himself beside her. "You're impossible."
Orihime hid the beginning of a smile behind another drink. "Kurosaki-kun says, after threatening to add thirty minutes to my rest."
He sat beside her. For a while, neither of them spoke. Their shoulders did not touch. They were close enough that they could have, and Ichigo remained sharply aware of the inch between them.
Footsteps crossed the rubble behind the ward.
Uryu stepped over a split roof tile and adjusted the strap of his bag with his uninjured hand. "There you are."
He approached with Chad at his side, both carrying the small bags Urahara had sent up for them. Uryu's uniform had been cleaned, but one sleeve was still torn and fresh bandages showed at his throat. His glasses were a spare pair that did not fit quite as well as the ones he had lost. Chad looked steadier, although a strip of white cloth disappeared beneath his shirt at one shoulder.
Orihime started toward them so quickly that Ichigo reached out in case she swayed.
Water sloshed against Orihime's fingers as she caught her balance. "Ishida-kun, Sado-kun. Are you leaving already?"
Chad inclined his head toward the southern gate, his uninjured shoulder carrying most of his bag's weight. "The Senkaimon is ready. Urahara-san is waiting on the other side."
Uryu pushed the loose spare glasses higher on his nose. "Before we go, the Captain-Commander has asked to speak to us." His gaze dropped to the cup in Orihime's hands, then shifted pointedly to Ichigo. "I see someone finally persuaded you to stop."
Orihime tightened both hands around the cup as if protecting the small concession. "Temporarily."
Ichigo lifted three fingers in Uryu's direction without taking his eyes off her. "Thirty minutes."
Uryu adjusted his glasses again, though they were no longer slipping. "How tyrannical."
Ichigo's eyes narrowed. "Shut up."
The corner of Uryu's mouth moved.
Chad studied the pallor beneath Orihime's smile and shifted closer in case the answer proved optimistic. "Can you walk?"
“Of course.” Orihime took one confident step. The toe of her shoe caught on a piece of fallen plaster, pitching her slightly off balance.
Ichigo's hand closed around her upper arm. Chad looked at the hand. Uryu looked at the hand. Orihime looked at the hand.
Ichigo released her as if the combined attention had burned his hand. His gaze dropped accusingly to the broken ground. "There's rubble everywhere."
Uryu followed that gaze to the small, harmless piece of plaster. One brow rose above his frames. "Naturally. That explains it."
Captain-Commander Kyoraku received them in what had once been a records room.
Half the ceiling was gone. Someone had stretched canvas across the opening, and sunlight filtered through it in warm, uneven patches. Nanao stood beside a desk crowded with reports, her uniform immaculate despite the destruction around her. Kyoraku sat behind the desk with his flowered haori draped over one shoulder and more bandages visible than Ichigo remembered seeing on him before the war.
Kyoraku lifted two fingers from the report he had apparently been avoiding and offered them a weary greeting. "Sorry to keep you from your rest."
Nanao's pen stopped.
Kyoraku glanced at the suddenly motionless pen in Nanao's hand. His visible eye creased with practiced innocence. "Their rest, Nanao-chan. I make no claims about my own excellent habits."
Nanao tapped the unsigned stack once with the end of her pen. "You have signed three of the eleven reports I placed in front of you."
Kyoraku spread one bandaged hand over the completed pages as though presenting a battlefield victory. "A heroic beginning."
Ichigo heard Orihime hide a laugh behind her hand. Even Uryu's expression softened.
Kyoraku's visible eye settled on them again, and the humor quieted without disappearing completely. He folded his hands over the desk.
"First, I want to thank all four of you. Soul Society owes you a debt that will take longer to name than it did to incur."
Ichigo's shoulders stiffened at the word debt. "You don't owe us anything."
Kyoraku leaned back, studying him from beneath the shadow of his hat. "That's rarely for the person who is owed to decide." His attention moved gently to Orihime. "Even so, I'll spare you the speeches today. I asked you here because I have one more request, and this one is for Inoue-chan."
Orihime straightened so quickly that fatigue vanished from her posture, if not her face. "For me?"
Kyoraku rested his forearms among the reports, all teasing gone from the line of his mouth. "Unohana-taicho left the Fourth Division with excellent healers, but too few of them. Kotetsu-fukutaicho has kept the wards standing through more than anyone should have to endure. There are injuries her people can treat and injuries they can only stabilize." His gaze was kind, but direct. "Your power can give some of those patients a future they won't have otherwise."
Ichigo felt Orihime's answer before she gave it.
Orihime leaned forward before Kyoraku could draw another breath. "I'll stay."
Kyoraku's head tipped back with a sigh, although a smile tugged at his mouth. "At least let an old man finish asking."
Her hands came together at her waist and she ducked her head. "I'm sorry."
Kyoraku waved the apology away, then placed one finger on the schedule Nanao had prepared. "Don't be. I was going to ask for one week. Long enough to move the most critical patients out of danger and let our own healers recover. You will have support, scheduled breaks, and the right to refuse whenever you need to." His eye held hers, leaving no room for duty to disguise itself as consent. "This is a request, not an order."
Orihime's shoulders relaxed, but her decision did not. She bowed from the waist. "One week is fine. Please let me help."
Ichigo's eyes dropped to the open front of her torn battle clothes, and the objection escaped before he could make it sound casual.
"If she's staying, give her something else to wear."
Every face in the room turned toward him.
Orihime followed his glance down, confusion drawing her brows together. "What?"
"A change of clothes." Ichigo gestured at her, stopped when the motion only directed everyone's attention to the problem, and dropped his hand as though it had betrayed him. "She's been fighting in that since yesterday. You can't expect her to spend a week in the wards wearing battle clothes."
It was a reasonable request. The fact that the front of Urahara's ridiculous outfit exposed enough skin to make looking directly at her a test of discipline had nothing to do with it.
Kyoraku's visible eye curved. He rested his cheek against one fist and considered Orihime's outfit with exaggerated thoughtfulness. "I thought Inoue-chan looked very pretty in it. Don't you like it, Kurosaki-kun?"
Orihime's lips parted. Color flooded her face, and one hand rose instinctively to the open neckline of her dress.
Ichigo's chin came up, the answer leaving him faster than caution could stop it. "I didn't say I didn't."
Uryu shut his eyes.
The meaning of his answer caught up with him a second too late. Heat climbed Ichigo's neck, and he dragged one hand through his hair. "That's not the point. She needs something she can actually work in."
Kyoraku touched a solemn hand to his chest, though laughter remained in his eye. "A purely practical concern. How thoughtless of me."
Nanao lifted her gaze from the reports one measured degree at a time. "Captain-Commander."
Nanao's voice could have sharpened a blade.
Kyoraku raised both hands in surrender, sleeves slipping back from his bandages. "Nanao-chan, please see that Inoue-chan receives several changes of clothes before she reports to the Fourth."
Nanao turned one page and indicated a completed supply list with the tip of her pen. "I had already arranged it. Along with sandals, toiletries, and a clean room."
Kyoraku inclined his head toward her with the gravity of a man acknowledging his true superior. "Excellent. This is why Soul Society continues to function."
Ichigo glanced at Orihime. She was still pink, but the hand at her neckline had loosened. When their eyes met, she looked away so quickly that he had to look somewhere else too.
Kyoraku's smile deepened when he caught Ichigo and Orihime looking away from each other at precisely the same moment. "Anything else, Kurosaki-kun?"
Ichigo shoved his hands into his pockets and fixed his attention on a hole in the canvas ceiling. "Yeah. I'm staying too."
The silence beside Ichigo changed.
Ichigo knew that look and met it with a scowl. "What?"
Uryu faced him fully, disbelief sharpening the line of his brows. "Kyoraku-san did not ask you."
Ichigo squared his shoulders as if the question itself were unreasonable. "He didn't have to."
Uryu's fingers paused against the bridge of his glasses. "Apparently not."
Ichigo jerked his chin toward the missing ceiling and the ruined streets beyond it. "There could still be Quincy soldiers hiding in the outer districts. Or Hollows drawn to all the damaged reishi." His gaze returned to Orihime before he could prevent it. "Somebody should make sure Inoue gets where she needs to go safely."
Uryu looked from Ichigo to Orihime, his expression acquiring the patience of someone correcting a very obvious error. "Inoue's shield withstood an attack from Yhwach. I imagine she can survive the walk between this room and the Fourth Division."
Ichigo's jaw shifted. "That's not the same thing."
Uryu opened one hand, inviting an explanation he clearly did not expect to receive. "How?"
Ichigo opened his mouth. Nothing useful arrived.
Chad folded his arms, the quiet concern in his face cutting through their argument. "Your family will be worried."
Ichigo rubbed the back of his neck and avoided the thought of Yuzu waiting beside the phone. "Urahara already told them I'm fine."
Uryu lowered his hand from his glasses. His voice remained level, but the concern beneath it was unmistakable. "Your sisters haven't seen you since before the second invasion. Do you not miss them?"
Ichigo's eyes flicked toward the Senkaimon route marked on Nanao's map. "Of course I do. I'll call them. I'll go home as soon as Inoue's finished here."
Uryu looked at him over the rims of his glasses, allowing the silence to underline the delay. "A week from now."
Ichigo gave a single, stubborn nod. "Yeah."
Uryu tilted his head toward Orihime, whose cheeks had begun to color again. "Because of Hollows that may or may not appear."
Ichigo's glare sharpened into a warning. "Ishida."
Uryu inspected him as though the war had left behind a particularly puzzling injury. "I am only trying to understand your reasoning. It has deteriorated considerably since the battle."
Ichigo showed his teeth in something too irritated to be a smile. "Maybe Yhwach damaged the part of my brain that puts up with you."
One corner of Uryu's mouth lifted. "That would imply the part existed before."
Orihime brought her hands together between them, her fingers making one small, pleading motion. "Kurosaki-kun. Ishida-kun." She did not raise her voice. She never needed to.
They stopped.
Her fingers tightened around the hem of her sleeve, but she kept her gaze on Ichigo. "I can stay by myself. I know that." A shy breath caught behind her next words. "But... I would be happy if Kurosaki-kun stayed too."
Heat climbed the back of Ichigo's neck.
Uryu's expression became unbearable.
Kyoraku brought his palms together once, suspiciously quick to rescue Ichigo from answering. "Then it's settled. Nanao-chan has arranged rooms for both of you in the Fourth Division residence." His visible eye gleamed when Nanao inhaled. "Separate rooms. Very respectable. Close enough for all possible Hollows to be observed."
Ichigo blew out a breath and folded his arms. "There aren't going to be any Hollows."
Kyoraku's hat tipped as he angled his head in mock disappointment. "A pity. You made them sound very determined."
Nanao pushed her glasses higher and drew the conversation back onto useful ground with a crisp turn of the schedule. "The rooms are in the east corridor. Inoue-san will receive a written rotation from Kotetsu-fukutaicho. Kurosaki-san, if you intend to remain, you can assist the patrols along the eastern breach rather than spending the week obstructing medical personnel."
Ichigo's arms dropped open. "I wasn't obstructing anyone."
Hanataro's shadow hovered uncertainly beyond the torn doorway before his faint, hurried voice carried into the room. "Kurosaki-san? Inoue-san's thirty minutes aren't over yet!"
Kyoraku's smile widened. Ichigo decided the conversation was finished.
The Senkaimon opened that afternoon.
By then, attendants from the Fourth had brought them clean clothes. Orihime had exchanged Urahara’s revealing battle outfit for the pale blue kosode Nanao had arranged for her, its sash tied neatly at her waist and its clean folds falling to her ankles. Ichigo wore a fresh black shihakusho in place of the one left stiff with blood and dust after the battle. Clean fabric could not make either of them look rested, but at least they no longer carried the battlefield so visibly on their bodies.
Orihime hugged Chad first, careful of his injured shoulder, then turned to Uryu and stopped because Uryu had already raised one hand in warning.
Uryu kept his raised palm between them, though his expression had already surrendered to the inevitable. "If you try to hug me while you can barely stand, you will fall over."
Orihime leaned around his hand, her brows drawing together in protest. "I wasn't going to fall over."
Uryu pointed toward the courtyard without looking away from her. "You tripped on an entirely stationary piece of plaster this morning."
She folded her arms and regarded the accused piece of ground. "It was shaped very deceptively."
Chad looked at the ground. Ichigo was certain he was hiding a smile.
Orihime hugged Uryu anyway. He froze and sighed, one hand stranded awkwardly above her back.
Uryu's stranded hand finally settled once between her shoulders. "Rest when the healers tell you to. Their instructions apply even when you believe you are the exception."
Orihime pulled back and nodded with far too much enthusiasm. "I will."
Ichigo folded his arms behind her, unimpressed by the performance. "That's a lie."
She released Uryu and turned an offended look on Ichigo, one hand pressing to her chest. "It's an optimistic intention."
Chad settled his bag more securely against his uninjured side. "I'll tell Tatsuki to call you tonight." His calm gaze shifted to Ichigo. "And we'll speak to your family."
Ichigo jabbed a thumb toward his own chest. "Tell them I'll call myself. If my dad starts crying, hang up."
Uryu adjusted the strap of his bag and gave Ichigo a look of almost clinical certainty. "Your father is going to start crying."
Ichigo cut one hand through the air. "Then definitely hang up."
The gateway brightened behind them, throwing white light across the ruined courtyard.
For one moment, all four of them stood without moving. They had gone into the final battle together. Going home should have been easier than this.
Chad extended his fist. Ichigo met it with his own. Uryu adjusted his glasses, glanced toward Orihime, and gave Ichigo a look that carried an entire conversation he had apparently decided to postpone.
Uryu paused with one foot in the white light and looked back over his shoulder. "One week."
Ichigo raised an exasperated hand. "I heard you the first six times."
Uryu held up two fingers with exacting calm. "I only said it twice."
Ichigo let his hand fall and scowled at the arithmetic. "It felt like six."
Uryu stepped into the light. Chad followed, lifting one hand in farewell, and the Senkaimon closed behind them.
Orihime remained facing the place where the gate had closed, her fingers still half-lifted in farewell. "Karakura feels very far away."
Ichigo moved beside her until their sleeves nearly brushed. He kept his eyes on the empty air ahead. "It isn't."
Her hand lowered slowly to her side. "I know."
He almost told her they could still leave. The Fourth Division would manage. Kyoraku would find another way. Ichigo would take her home, make sure Tatsuki fed her something that had not come from a field kitchen, and sleep for two days within reach of his own bed.
Then he looked toward the ward, where people were alive because Orihime had remained when anyone else would have been allowed to stop.
Ichigo shifted toward the Fourth Division and waited for her to move with him. "Come on. We should see those rooms before somebody gives them away."
A woman's voice dropped from the broken wall above them, rich with amusement. "Too late."
Kukaku Shiba stood atop the broken wall behind them with one hand on her hip. Her cloak snapped in the breeze, and the band wrapped around her head did nothing to soften her grin. Ganju climbed up beside her, caught his sandal on the edge, and nearly fell back into the street.
Kukaku hooked her thumb toward the road beyond Seireitei as though the decision required no discussion. "We're not staying at the Fourth."
Ichigo tipped his face up to her, already scowling. "Who invited you?"
Kukaku planted her hand more firmly on her hip. "You did, by being stupid enough to remain in Soul Society without coming home."
The word home tightened Ichigo's mouth. "Your house isn't my home."
The grin left Kukaku's face, though not in anger. She lowered her hand and regarded him without trying to make the truth easier. "It was your father's before he gave up his power and his name to save your mother. That makes it yours if you want it."
Ichigo looked away.
Isshin had told him the truth in pieces, between battles, as though there would be time later for the parts that did not fit inside an emergency. Ichigo knew the name Shiba. He knew his father had worn a captain's haori and once stood at the head of the family whose crest Kukaku carried. Knowing those things had not yet taught him what to do with them.
Kukaku jumped down from the wall and landed squarely in front of him. "You don't have to decide what the name means today." She jerked her chin toward the road. "You can start by eating a proper meal under its roof."
Ichigo hooked a thumb toward the Fourth Division. "We already have rooms."
Kukaku counted the damage on her fingers. "I heard. I also heard the east residence lost half its bathhouse and all its kitchen windows."
Ganju landed beside her with far less grace, recovered his balance, and patted his stomach. "And the Shiba house has food."
Ichigo gave him a flat look. "That argument works better on you than it does on everyone else."
Ganju grinned, entirely unashamed. "Still works."
Kukaku's gaze moved to Orihime, her posture softening by a fraction. "You're staying too, aren't you?"
Orihime folded her hands politely before her. "Kyoraku-san asked me to help for a week. The Fourth Division kindly offered me a room."
Kukaku flicked her fingers toward the damaged residence as though returning an unwanted gift. "They can keep offering. You're both coming with us."
Orihime shifted one small step away from Ichigo, giving the family space that no one had asked for. "I wouldn't want to intrude on a reunion."
"You wouldn't." The answer left Ichigo before Kukaku had finished raising an eyebrow. He dragged a hand through his hair and tried again. "I mean, if you want to come. It's farther from the Fourth, but I'll take you in the morning. And bring you back at night." His gaze caught on the broken wall behind her. "It might be safer than staying here with half the walls down."
A shared silence answered him.
Ichigo's scowl deepened beneath the shared scrutiny. "What now?"
Kukaku's grin returned one deliberate inch at a time. She pressed a hand to her heart. "Nothing. I'm only touched. The lost son comes home and asks permission to bring his future wife."
Orihime made a tiny sound.
"She's not- I didn't say-" Ichigo's face ignited, and he pointed at the house as if it were the true offense. "Stop calling it home!"
Kukaku's remaining eyebrow arched. "That was the part you objected to?"
Ganju's eyes widened. He looked from Orihime to Ichigo as though a family secret had just been revealed. "Inoue is going to be a Shiba bride?"
Ichigo flung both hands out between them. "Nobody said that!"
Ganju turned toward the house and began taking an urgent inventory on his fingers. "You could have warned us. We need better food. And flowers." He glanced helplessly at Kukaku. "Do we have flowers?"
Kukaku struck him on the back of the head.
Ganju clutched the back of his head and stared at his sister in betrayal. "Ow! What was that for?"
Kukaku flexed the hand she had used to strike him and pointed the other at Orihime. "For planning a wedding before the girl agreed to dinner."
Orihime's face had turned pink all the way to her ears. She pressed both hands to her cheeks, looked from Kukaku to Ganju, and finally met Ichigo's eyes. He wanted the ground to open beneath him.
Instead, Orihime lowered her hands from her burning cheeks and smiled at Kukaku. "I would be honored to stay with the Shiba family."
Ganju pointed at Ichigo in triumph, nearly upsetting his own balance again. "She said yes!"
Ichigo knocked the accusing finger aside. "To the room, you idiot!"
Kukaku threw her head back and laughed hard enough to start coughing. Somewhere behind them, a section of damaged roof slid loose and crashed into an empty courtyard.
No one even flinched.
The Shiba residence stood beyond the worst of the destruction, surrounded by open land and a sky wide enough to make Seireitei feel like another world.
Getting there required two enormous boars, one narrow cart, and a route Ganju insisted was a shortcut despite every piece of evidence to the contrary.
Orihime rode in the cart beside Kukaku. Ichigo sat at the back with one foot braced against the frame while Ganju steered from the front and shouted conflicting instructions at Bonnie. The road dipped without warning. The cart bounced. Ichigo's hand shot out and caught Orihime around the waist before she could slide sideways.
She grabbed his shoulder. For a breath, they were very close.
Ichigo withdrew his arm from Orihime's waist so quickly that his elbow struck the cart frame. "Sorry."
Orihime released his shoulder at the same moment and tucked both hands into her lap. "Thank you."
Kukaku devoted suspicious attention to the road.
Ichigo narrowed his eyes at the grin disturbing Kukaku's carefully blank profile. "If you say anything, I'm walking."
Kukaku raised her open palm without turning from the road. "I didn't say a word."
He pointed at the grin she was failing to hide. "Your face did."
The grin won. Kukaku settled more comfortably against the cart. "Good. Saves time."
Ganju twisted around on the driver's bench, loosening one rein as he did. "What happened?"
Ichigo braced both feet against the cart while Kukaku and Orihime reached instinctively toward the reins. Their voices struck the courtyard together. "Watch the road!"
Bonnie swerved around a crater. The cart tilted. Ganju screamed louder than Orihime did.
By the time the Shiba gates came into view, Orihime was laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes.
Ichigo had not heard her laugh like that since before the first invasion. The realization stole some of the annoyance from him.
The house was large without being elegant, built in broad wooden lines around a central courtyard. Parts of it had been repaired with materials that did not match. A faded Shiba crest hung above the entrance. Firework casings leaned against one wall beside stacked jars, coils of rope, and three objects Ichigo strongly suspected were explosive.
It looked exactly like a place his father might once have belonged.
Kukaku caught him studying the cracked entrance beam and pointed overhead with the stem of her pipe. "He broke that."
Ichigo leaned back to inspect the damage more closely. "My dad?"
She tapped the split in the wood. "Tried to prove he could launch himself from the western cannon without a shell."
Ichigo stared at the crack and rubbed one hand over his face. "That sounds like him."
Kukaku lifted one shoulder, denying him the comfort of blaming youth. "He was nineteen."
Ichigo's hand dropped. The grimace remained. "Still sounds like him."
Ganju dragged their bags across the threshold, eager to contribute to the evidence. "He also ate twelve bowls of stew once."
Kukaku raised two fingers in correction. "Fourteen. He lied about the last two because he'd bet Kaien he could stop at twelve."
The name changed the air for a moment. Kukaku's expression did not close, but the old grief in it was easy to see. Ganju became very interested in arranging the bags.
Ichigo looked again at the faded crest.
There were too many dead people inside the story of his family. Masaki. Kaien. The Shiba ancestors whose names he had never learned. There had always been another fight waiting whenever someone tried to tell him about them.
Now there was only the open doorway. Orihime stood quietly at his side. She did not touch him or fill the silence. She simply waited there until he stepped across the threshold.
Dinner was loud enough to disturb whatever ghosts had remained.
Kukaku produced enough food for ten people. Ganju claimed this was a normal meal. Ichigo pointed out that Ganju had already eaten four bowls. Orihime, after too many field rations and cups of weak tea, accepted a third serving with such sincere gratitude that even Kukaku looked pleased.
Ganju presented the stew pot to Ichigo as though Orihime's empty bowl had settled an argument. "See? She understands this family."
Ichigo pointed his chopsticks at Ganju's fourth serving. "Eating dinner doesn't make someone family."
Kukaku raised her sake cup toward Orihime in approval. "It is an excellent beginning."
Orihime paused with her chopsticks halfway to a slice of simmered lotus root. Her eyes widened as a forgotten rule arrived too late. "Should I have brought a gift? Tatsuki-chan says you should never visit someone's home for the first time without one, but I didn't know I was visiting until we were already in the cart." She brightened and leaned toward Kukaku. "I could make breakfast tomorrow. I know a recipe with sweet potatoes, mackerel, red bean paste, and just a little wasabi-"
Ganju slowly lowered the pot.
Kukaku lowered her cup and considered Orihime with new respect. "How little wasabi?"
Orihime pinched her thumb and forefinger together, leaving a very optimistic amount of space between them. "Enough to surprise the tongue, but not enough to frighten the sweet potato."
Kukaku leaned forward, interest sharpening her grin. "I want to try it."
Ichigo rubbed the heel of his hand over one tired eye. "Of course you do."
Ganju leaned so close that his hair nearly brushed Ichigo's cheek and shielded his mouth with one hand. "If she marries you, can we still refuse breakfast?"
Ichigo kicked him under the table.
Ganju yelped and kicked back. His foot hit the table leg. Bowls jumped. Orihime caught the soup pot between both hands before it tipped, while Kukaku's sake cup slid toward the edge.
Kukaku caught her sake cup without looking and fixed both men with a level stare. "Children."
Ichigo and Ganju pointed at each other across the trembling bowls, their voices colliding in perfect time. "He started it."
Orihime laughed into her sleeve.
Later, after the dishes were cleared, Kukaku led Ichigo along the outer corridor while Ganju showed Orihime the guest rooms.
Night had settled over the fields. From here the damaged glow of Seireitei was only a pale band against the horizon.
Kukaku let her fingers trail over the old corridor rail as they walked. "You don't have to keep the Shiba name."
Ichigo kept his gaze on the damaged glow of Seireitei. "I never said I wanted it."
Kukaku glanced sideways at the crease between his brows. "You didn't have to. You've been glaring at the crest every time you pass it."
His frown deepened on instinct. "I glare at everything."
The corner of her mouth lifted. "A family trait."
She stopped beside an old post scarred by blade marks. Some were shallow. Others had nearly split the wood.
Kukaku pressed her thumb into one of the deepest scars in the training post. "Your father trained here. Kaien too." Her nail followed the old cut through the wood. "They fought, shouted, broke things, and assumed the people who loved them would always be there when they came back. Men in this family have a talent for mistaking someone's patience for permanence."
Ichigo's eyes narrowed, but his attention followed hers toward the guest wing. "What is that supposed to mean?"
Kukaku's gaze slid toward the lit guest room at the end of the corridor. Orihime's silhouette moved behind the paper screen.
Kukaku rolled one shoulder and let him see the mercy in the evasion. "Tonight? Nothing. You all earned one night without lessons."
Ichigo turned toward her fully, irritation easier to hold than everything the post had stirred up. "You dragged me out here to say nothing?"
Kukaku struck his shoulder, not gently, but not hard enough to hurt. "I dragged you here so you could stand where your father stood and learn that you came from somewhere." Her hand fell back to her side. "The nothing was extra."
Before he could answer, she walked away.
Ichigo looked once more at the cuts in the post. One week, he reminded himself.
He could endure one week of Shiba hospitality. He went to his room and left the door open until the lamp in hers went dark.
Ichigo woke to movement.
His hand closed around Zangetsu before his eyes opened. The room was dark, moonlight laid across the floor in a narrow strip, and for one violent second he expected the ceiling to split into a Quincy sky.
Then he felt the house around him.
Kukaku's reiatsu burned steady in the far wing. Ganju's sprawled everywhere, uneven with sleep. Outside, the fields shifted under the night wind.
Orihime's presence was moving away.
Ichigo was in the corridor before he had fully tied his robe.
The door to her room stood open. Her bedding was empty.
He followed her reiatsu around the courtyard, across the moonlit veranda, and down three wooden steps into the garden.
She stood beneath a crooked persimmon tree with her arms folded against the cold. Her hair was loose now, pale in the moonlight.
Orihime gathered the loose edge of her robe at her throat when she recognized him. "Kurosaki-kun?"
The tightness in Ichigo's chest released so sharply it made him angry. He stopped at the edge of the veranda, Zangetsu still clenched in his hand. "What are you doing out here?"
Orihime blinked at the accusation and pointed gently upward. "Looking at the stars."
Ichigo tipped the sword toward the dark garden around her. "In the middle of the night?"
She tilted her face toward the bright scatter above the branches. "That's usually when they're available."
Ichigo exhaled through his nose.
Her amusement faded when she noticed Zangetsu in his hand. Her eyes traced the untied robe and the urgency he had not hidden. "Did you think something happened?"
Ichigo tightened his grip on the sword, the image of her empty bedding still sharp behind his eyes. "Your room was empty."
Orihime folded her arms against the cold and glanced back at the house. "I couldn't sleep. I tried counting the cracks in the ceiling, but there were only seventeen. Then I counted them backward, and that was still seventeen, so I came outside."
A frustrated line appeared between Ichigo's brows. "You could've told me."
Her gaze dropped to his half-tied robe. "You were asleep."
He straightened as if posture could make the claim true. "I wasn't."
Orihime gave him the same patient look she had given him that morning and nodded toward the short path behind her. "You arrived before I reached the tree."
He had no answer that did not sound ridiculous. She sat on the edge of the veranda and tucked her bare feet beneath her robe. After a moment, Ichigo set Zangetsu beside the steps and sat too.
The fields stretched dark beyond the garden. Without Seireitei's walls around them, the sky seemed too large.
Orihime wrapped her arms more tightly around herself and watched the fields instead of him. "It's strange. Everything is so quiet here, but my head is still loud."
Ichigo rolled one shoulder, feeling an answering tension beneath it. "Yeah."
Her eyes closed for a moment. "When I do this, I see the ward. Some of them look at me as if I can make the war not have happened." She opened them and rubbed her palms together. "I wish I could."
Ichigo watched her hands worry at each other until he could not stand it. "You don't owe anyone that."
Orihime curled her fingers into her palms, accepting the truth without finding comfort in it. "I know. I only want tomorrow to hurt less for them."
His hand closed over the edge of the veranda. "It won't if you collapse first."
A small, tired smile returned to her face. "That's why I agreed to thirty minutes."
Ichigo pointed toward the guest rooms behind them. "You were supposed to sleep after."
She turned the pointing gesture back on him with one lifted finger. "So were you."
Ichigo scowled at the garden, where no one could see him losing the argument. "We keep having this conversation."
Orihime nudged his shoulder lightly with hers. "Maybe we're both bad at taking advice."
He gave her a narrow look from the corner of his eye. "You're worse."
Her gaze dropped pointedly to Zangetsu beside the steps. "Kurosaki-kun came outside carrying a sword because I walked twenty steps away."
That ended the argument.
Orihime's shoulder pressed lightly against his. Whether it was accidental or not, she did not move away.
Orihime's shoulder eased away from his, leaving a cool line between them. "You don't have to stay for the whole week because of me." She searched his face. "Kurosaki-kun's family must want him home. Yuzu-chan and Karin-chan especially."
Ichigo looked out over the dark fields, where the route back to Karakura could not be seen. "I'll talk to them tomorrow."
She gathered one sleeve between her fingers. "You could go back and visit. I can travel with the patrols."
His hand tightened on the edge of the veranda.
He could. The Senkaimon would open again in two days. Renji or Rukia could walk with her. Orihime was more capable of defending herself than nearly anyone he knew. None of those facts changed the answer inside him.
Ichigo flattened his palm against the veranda and made himself look at her. "I want to stay."
She turned her face toward him.
Ichigo forced himself not to look away. His fingers pressed harder into the wood. "When we were up there... every time I couldn't see you, I thought something had happened. When Yhwach broke Tensa Zangetsu, when the floor split, when his reiatsu covered everything..." His throat tightened around the rest.
He had believed he was going to die. That frightened him less than the memory of turning and failing to find her.
He breathed once through his nose, but the pressure in his chest did not ease. "I know the fight's over. My head knows." His free hand pressed briefly against his sternum. "The rest of me hasn't caught up yet. So let me be stupid for a week."
Orihime's eyes shone in the moonlight. She placed her hand beside his on the veranda, close without quite touching. "Then we can be stupid together."
Ichigo's head turned sharply toward her. "What?"
Orihime held his gaze despite the tremor in her smile. "When Kurosaki-kun ran ahead, I thought the same thing. I knew you were strong. I knew Ishida-kun was with you. I knew all of it, and I still kept listening for your reiatsu because I was afraid it would disappear." Her fingers crept closer to his on the wood. "Maybe the rest of me hasn't caught up either."
For once, Ichigo did not try to tell her there had been no reason to worry.
He understood too well.
The wind moved through the persimmon branches. Orihime shivered. Ichigo pulled the outer layer of his robe from his shoulders and held it out.
Orihime looked from the offered robe to his bare forearms, concern immediately overtaking her own shiver. "Kurosaki-kun will be cold."
Ichigo held the robe closer, refusing to acknowledge the night air against his skin. "I'm not cold."
She pointed at the evidence rising along his arms. "You have goose bumps."
He shook the robe once, impatient enough to hide the embarrassment. "Take it before I put it over your head."
She accepted the robe, laughing softly, and wrapped it around herself. The sleeves covered her hands.
Orihime brushed her thumb over the soft fold covering her hand. "Thank you."
Ichigo reached for Zangetsu, then left it where it was and faced her instead. "Next time you go somewhere, tell me."
Her gaze traveled across the few steps between the veranda and the persimmon tree. "Even if it's only to the garden?"
Ichigo followed that gaze and returned it firmly to her. "Especially if it's in the middle of the night."
Orihime settled the oversized robe more securely around her shoulders. "All right." Her expression turned quietly determined. "But Kurosaki-kun has to tell me too."
One of Ichigo's brows rose. "Tell you what?"
"When you're going somewhere. When you can't sleep. When you're hurt." Orihime looked down at the robe around her shoulders and smoothed the fabric over one knee. When she raised her eyes again, there was nothing playful in them. "You can't ask me to stop disappearing if you keep doing it yourself."
Ichigo stared at her. The answer he would once have given rose automatically, that it was different, that he could handle himself, that she did not need to worry.
After everything they had survived, it felt too dishonest to say.
Ichigo released a breath that clouded briefly in the cold and looked away. "Fine."
Orihime's smile returned, gentler and far too knowing. "An optimistic intention?"
Heat touched Ichigo's ears. He retrieved Zangetsu with more force than necessary. "Don't use my own words against me."
Her smile widened as she tucked both covered hands beneath her chin. "Those were my words."
Ichigo turned toward the house before she could see his mouth threaten to smile. "Then stop using your words against me."
She laughed again, brighter this time.
They stayed until the cold deepened and the lights of Seireitei blurred at the horizon. Eventually, they returned to the guest wing.
Orihime paused with one hand on her doorframe and looked back at him. "Good night, Kurosaki-kun."
Ichigo rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly aware of how hastily he had tied his robe. "Good night."
She took one step inside, then turned back, her fingers curling around the edge of the screen. "I'm not going anywhere."
Heat reached Ichigo's face. He tightened his hand around Zangetsu's strap and held her gaze anyway. "I know."
Her door slid closed.
He stood in the corridor until her footsteps crossed the room and her reiatsu settled.
The war being over was not what finally allowed Ichigo to sleep. It was the quiet warmth of Orihime's presence beyond the wall, close enough to find without opening his eyes.
