As Bucky stepped into the blackness of the void he wasn’t afraid of what he’d see. He knew his passed was littered with shame, guilt and regrets from his time with Hydra and he assumed the Void would select one of those memories…but it didn’t. Looking around, confusion flooded his features, he expected snow, ice and death but instead he was in a wooded area with birds chirping and blue skies “what the fuck” he breathed… but the moment he saw him, Bucky knew why the void had chosen this.
Standing on a platform in the distance was Steve, he was getting ready to go back in time with all the stones “no” breathed Bucky “not this…please”. He watched the scene play out, Sam and Dr Banner chatting, Steve walking over to his twin and wrapping his arms around him before stepping back onto the platform “Steve wait” shouted Bucky as he ran towards them “no Steve don’t go please..don’t leave me” but by the time he reached the platform his friend was gone “no, no, no Steve please” he fell to his knees in despair.
Like clockwork the scene started again… “stop” he sobbed putting his head in his hands; he couldn’t bear it. Stumbling to his feet, he pushed the other Bucky out the way and tried desperately to talk to the captain “Steve don’t go..don’t leave me” he begged “I love you, I’ve loved you since the war…I should have told you” ! Steve grasped him bringing him into a hug like with the other Bucky, except this time he whispered into his ear “doesn’t matter Buck… you can’t changed whats already happened”. Turning away the captain stood back on the platform “don’t do anything stupid till I get back” smiled the blonde, making Bucky cry louder “how can I” he sobbed “your taking all the stupid with you” and then Steve was gone again.
Bucky turned to face himself “we really fucked up that day didn’t we” but his double just turns away. Then, just like that, the scene started again, the blonde smiling at him from the platform “fuck this” whispered Bucky turning away from him, he’d take any Hydra void room over this. He ran back to where he started only to fall through the ground and land on a bed of snow…
Laying there Bucky breathed a sigh of relief, this was more like, the bitter ice cold engulfing his body. It was almost calming, peaceful even that was until he heard whimpering in the distance. Standing up, he looked around until he saw a figure lying in the snow.
With short dark brown hair, a navy blue coat and crimson blood splattered across it, Bucky knew who he was looking at… he was looking at Sergeant James Barnes of the 107th. He was shivering and whimpering in pain, those blue eyes on his youthful face wide with fear “Steve” he sobbed quietly. Bucky shook his head as he looked down at himself “there’s no angels coming for you…only devils..and order…and pain”.
Crouching down beside himself he cupped his younger face “we should have died down here James..” he whispered only to hear footsteps in the distance growing nearer “but don’t worry, it takes them 20 years to break you” he soothed “then you wont remember any of this…at least, not until you see that blonde angel again“.
