Echoes of the Titans

Chapter One — Fifteen Years Later

Fifteen years ago, the world changed.

Nobody knew where the first Kaiju came from.

There was no warning.

No explanation.

One day, humanity was living normally.

The next, something enormous rose from the ocean and tore through three cities before anyone understood what they were looking at.

The first year was chaos.

The second was worse.

By the third, humanity had learned how to fight back.

That was when the Mechas appeared.

Massive machines designed to fight creatures too powerful for conventional weapons.

At first, the pilots were soldiers.

Then specially trained civilians.

Then, eventually, something nobody expected happened.

K-pop agencies began developing their own Mecha programs.

The agencies already had the money, technology, training facilities, and worldwide audiences.

And the public loved it.

The mysterious pilots became celebrities.

They had team names.

Merchandise.

Fan clubs.

Lightsticks.

Entire documentaries were made about their battles.

But there was one thing the public usually didn't know.

Who was actually inside the machines?

That information was classified.

Fifteen years later, Kaiju attacks had become part of everyday life.

Not normal.

Never normal.

But familiar.

Everyone knew the warning levels.

Level One: Stay alert.

Level Two: Prepare to shelter.

Level Three: Shelter immediately.

Level Four: Evacuate.

And Level Five?

Nobody joked about Level Five.

---

"Level Two."

Han looked up from his phone.

"What?"

Their manager didn't take his eyes off the road.

"Kaiju warning. Level Two."

Han stared at him.

"Again?"

"We had one last week."

Seungmin looked up from his phone.

"That was Level One."

Han turned toward him.

"Why do you know that?"

"Because I read the emergency alerts."

"I read them."

"You read the word 'Kaiju.'"

"That's the important part."

Felix laughed from beside him.

Changbin looked up.

"Does this mean rehearsal is canceled?"

Their manager sighed.

"Yes."

Everyone immediately became more interested.

"Seriously?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Until the warning is lifted."

Changbin grinned.

"Best Kaiju ever."

Chan turned around from the front passenger seat.

"Don't say that."

"Why?"

"Because somebody's probably having the worst day of their life right now."

Changbin's grin disappeared.

"...Fair."

I.N looked out the window.

People were already heading toward the nearest shelters.

Nobody was panicking.

That was one of the strangest things about living in a world with Kaiju.

A warning could interrupt an entire city, and people would still complain about their plans being ruined.

A woman carrying groceries checked her phone and sighed.

A group of students hurried toward a shelter while complaining about missing a movie.

A man outside a convenience store finished his drink before walking inside.

Life simply adjusted.

Their van turned down another street.

Their manager glanced at the navigation.

"We're going to the underground shelter near the studio."

Chan nodded.

"How close?"

"Three blocks."

The van suddenly shook.

Everyone went silent.

A second tremor followed.

Stronger.

Han grabbed the seat in front of him.

"That wasn't normal."

Their manager stepped on the gas.

"I know."

---

The shelter doors slammed shut behind them.

People were already filling the underground facility.

Families sat together.

Children played games.

Some people watched the emergency screens.

Others simply waited.

Stray Kids were directed toward an open section near the wall.

Han dropped into a chair.

"I hate this."

Felix sat beside him.

"You hate everything that involves sitting still."

"Exactly."

Changbin noticed a little boy sitting nearby.

The boy was wearing a bright plastic Mecha helmet.

Changbin smiled.

"Cool helmet."

The boy looked up.

"Thanks!"

"What team?"

The boy's eyes lit up.

"Aurora!"

Changbin laughed.

"Good choice."

His mother smiled apologetically.

"He's obsessed."

"Can't blame him."

Changbin looked toward the emergency screens.

Aurora was one of the most famous Mecha teams in the world.

But technically, Aurora wasn't one Mecha.

It was three.

Aurora's nine pilots were divided into three trios, each operating their own specialized machine.

Astra.

Luna.

Tidal.

When a threat became severe enough, the three machines could combine into the massive nine-pilot Mecha known as:

Aurora.

Nobody outside the classified program knew who the pilots were.

Fans had theories.

Some thought the pilots were former soldiers.

Some thought they were specially recruited athletes.

Others had created ridiculous conspiracy theories.

Seungmin had once found a post claiming Aurora's pilots were nine androids.

He still occasionally wondered how seriously the person had written it.

"Guys."

Chan's voice pulled everyone's attention toward the screen.

The emergency broadcast had changed.

KAIJU DETECTED

The room became quieter.

A reporter appeared.

"We have confirmation that the Level Two warning has been upgraded. Residents are advised to remain inside designated shelters until further notice."

A map appeared.

A red warning zone expanded.

Then another message appeared.

KAIJU APPROACHING METROPOLITAN AREA

Han sat up.

"That's close."

A deep rumble passed through the building.

A child started crying.

His mother pulled him closer.

"It's okay."

The emergency broadcast switched to live footage.

The camera shook violently.

Smoke covered the streets.

Buildings stood damaged in the distance.

Then something moved.

Huge.

Slow.

Terrifying.

A Kaiju emerged from the smoke.

Its body was covered in thick armored plates.

Four enormous limbs slammed against the pavement.

Its head turned.

Then it roared.

The sound distorted the broadcast.

Everyone in the shelter went silent.

Felix swallowed.

"That's a big one."

"That's not a Level Two," Han whispered.

Seungmin shook his head.

"Maybe the warning hasn't caught up."

The Kaiju slammed into a building.

The screen shook.

The shelter trembled.

The little boy with the Aurora helmet grabbed his mother's hand.

"Mom."

"They're coming."

Changbin looked over.

"Who?"

The mother pointed toward the screen.

"The Mechas."

---

MECHA RESPONSE TEAM DEPLOYING

Han's eyes widened.

"Which team?"

Nobody answered.

The camera suddenly turned toward the sky.

Three enormous silhouettes streaked through the clouds.

The shelter erupted.

The little boy jumped to his feet.

"AURORA!"

Han stared.

"Wait."

The three Mechas descended.

The first landed with enormous mechanical wings spreading behind it.

ASTRA.

Built for aerial combat.

The second slammed onto the street.

LUNA.

A heavily armored land-combat Mecha.

Then the third emerged from the water.

TIDAL.

An enormous aquatic Mecha covered in streamlined armor.

The three machines surrounded the Kaiju.

The creature roared.

Astra launched into the air.

Luna charged.

Tidal attacked from below.

The battle began.

Han leaned forward.

"That's so cool."

Felix laughed.

"You're way too excited."

"Look at them!"

Astra dove toward the Kaiju.

Luna blocked a claw strike.

Tidal struck from behind.

The three Mechas moved independently.

But they were clearly coordinating.

Then the Kaiju changed direction.

It knocked Luna backward.

Astra landed beside her.

Tidal rose from the water.

The three machines suddenly moved into formation.

Their energy systems activated.

Seungmin stared.

"What's happening?"

Chan looked at the screen.

"They're combining."

The three Mechas moved.

Astra's wings expanded.

Tidal's armor shifted.

Luna's core opened.

The machines locked together.

The entire battlefield shook.

The three machines became one.

A gigantic Mecha stood where they had been.

Nine-pilot synchronization.

Three machines.

One body.

AURORA.

The shelter erupted.

The little boy screamed.

"AURORA!"

Han practically jumped out of his chair.

"No way!"

Aurora charged.

The Kaiju attacked.

Aurora blocked it.

A massive energy weapon formed across its arm.

It struck.

The Kaiju staggered.

Aurora launched into the air.

Then came down with enough force to crack the pavement.

The Kaiju collapsed.

Silence.

Then—

BOOM.

The creature hit the ground.

The shelter erupted into cheers.

Han was laughing.

"That was insane."

I.N smiled.

"They made that look easy."

Chan didn't answer.

He was still watching.

There was something about the way those nine pilots worked together.

The trust.

The coordination.

The complete lack of hesitation.

It reminded him of Stray Kids.

Eight people.

Eight different personalities.

Eight completely different strengths.

But when they performed together...

Sometimes they didn't need words either.

Chan smiled.

"Whoever those pilots are..."

He looked at the screen.

"They're amazing."

---

A few kilometers away...

Inside Aurora, nine people were breathing heavily.

"Status?"

Jihyo's voice came through the communications system.

"Minor armor damage."

"Same."

"Nothing serious."

Mina checked her readings.

"Wait."

Everyone stopped.

"What?"

"The Kaiju's energy output changed before it went down."

Jihyo looked at her display.

"How much?"

"Enough to notice."

Silence.

Chaeyoung looked toward the fallen creature.

"That's weird."

Dahyun frowned.

"Isn't it?"

Jihyo stared at the readings.

"Send the data to headquarters."

"Already done."

"Good."

She looked around at the three Mecha systems now connected into Aurora.

"Everyone still with me?"

One by one, the answers came.

"Here."

"Fine."

"Good."

"Still alive."

Sana laughed.

"That's reassuring."

Jihyo smiled faintly.

"Let's get back."

Aurora separated.

Astra, Luna, and Tidal became three individual Mechas again.

The public saw heroes.

They didn't see the exhaustion.

They didn't see the bruises.

They didn't see nine idols sitting inside three machines worth billions of dollars.

And they certainly didn't know their identities.

That was exactly how it needed to stay.

---

Back in the shelter, the emergency broadcast changed.

KAIJU THREAT NEUTRALIZED

People began standing.

Parents collected their children.

Workers checked their phones.

The little boy with the Aurora helmet ran past Stray Kids.

"Did you see them?!"

Changbin laughed.

"Yeah."

"They're the best!"

Han nodded.

"They really are."

The boy ran back to his mother.

Lee Know had been unusually quiet.

Han noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You've been staring at the screen."

"I was watching."

"You liked them."

Lee Know shrugged.

"They're good."

Han grinned.

"You want a Mecha?"

Lee Know looked at him.

"No."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"You totally are."

"I'd rather have a cat."

Han laughed.

"Of course you would."

Lee Know gave him a small smile.

Their manager approached.

"Everyone ready?"

Chan stood.

"Yeah."

The group followed him toward the shelter exit.

None of them noticed the black vehicle parked across the street.

None of them noticed the two people sitting inside it.

And none of them noticed the file open on the tablet between them.

Eight names.

Eight photographs.

Eight compatibility scores.

The screen displayed a single heading.

JYP ENTERTAINMENT — CLASSIFIED MECHA CANDIDATES

The first name was highlighted.

BANG CHAN.

Then:

LEE KNOW.

CHANGBIN.

HYUNJIN.

FELIX.

HAN.

SEUNGMIN.

I.N.

The final line appeared.

ALL EIGHT — PILOT ELIGIBLE.

One of the people in the vehicle looked toward the shelter.

"They don't know."

The other person closed the tablet.

"They're not supposed to."

"How long until they're told?"

A pause.

"Tomorrow."

---

The next morning, Stray Kids would wake up expecting another ordinary day.

Breakfast.

Rehearsal.

Music.

Choreography.

Schedules.

Fans.

Cameras.

The usual.

Instead, they would be taken somewhere none of them knew existed.

Somewhere beneath the city.

Somewhere filled with machines taller than buildings.

And waiting for them would be four Mechas.

A wolf.

A titan.

A phoenix.

And a hydra.

They had spent fifteen years watching heroes from behind a screen.

They just didn't know that soon...

they would become the heroes everyone else was watching.
