Summary:

Peter had a nightmare. It wasn't even a bad one, he doesn't know why it's affecting him so much. Regardless, it is affecting him, so, he goes to May's room.

Work Text:

This is pathetic. Peter feels like a little kid.

He had a nightmare. It wasn't even a bad nightmare, all things considered, he's had worse. It was about the fight with the Vulture. About the building, more specifically.

He's had nightmares about it before too, Peter really doesn't get why he's so freaked over it tonight. Still, it feels like he's in the fight again. It's like his senses have been dialed up. He can hear his pulse in his ears, and the tears running down his cheeks feel way too present for his liking.

Peter gets out of bed, speedwalking out of his room. He's down the hall before he even realizes where his feet are taking him, easing the door to May's room open before slipping in, closing it behind him.

May and Tony are sleeping. This is stupid. Peter doesn't even remember the last time he slept in May's bed. Way before Uncle Ben passed, even. Still, he takes a deep breath, then another, forcing himself to relax as much as he can before walking over, tapping Tony's arm a couple times.

The man shoots awake. One arm tightening around May, the other waving vaguely in Peter's direction. Peter dodges easily, breath catching. He watches as Tony blinks, realizing who it was that woke him up.

"Hey, Pete," he mutters, carefully unravelling himself from May's arms and sitting up. "Wha's wrong, bud? It's late.."

"I—" Peter's voice cracks. He clears his throat a little, trying again. "I had a nightmare.." His voice is so small. If Peter could actually focus on anything that wasn't the nightmare he'd just had—the building, the pressure. He had to hold it up all by himself—he'd probably be embarrassed.

Instead all he can feel is relief as Tony carefully takes his arm, pulling him in. Peter goes willingly, climbing over him to lie between him and May. May groans a little in her sleep, an arm coming up around Peter's torso.

"Go to sleep, bug," Tony whispers as he lies back down, a hand coming up to run through his hair. "We've got you. I'll protect you, okay? Nothin's gonna hurt you. Promise."

Promise. Okay. Peter can trust him. He's Iron Man, after all, he's a superhero, he won't let anything happen. Peter sighs, nuzzling into Tony's chest. The light of the reactor beneath his shirt brightens the room just enough that Peter can see. That's.. that's good. There's nothing n the shadows. Good.

Tony presses a kiss to his head, and— Peter never apologized. It totally slipped his mind. He just—just woke Tony up. In the middle of the night. He probably won't be able to fall back asleep after this. "'m sorry.. for wakin' you," he murmurs against Tony, the sleep finally pulling him back under.
