Tony Stark was dying.
The palladium poisoning was getting worse by the day, and no amount of chlorophyll sludge, whiskey, or denial was going to fix it.
Then New York called to inform him that his biological son’s guardians had died unexpectedly, leaving Tony with temporary emergency custody of a fourteen-year-old kid who very clearly wanted nothing to do with him.
There was a reason Tony never wanted to be a father.

Summary
Peter, now forgotten by the world, prepares to die. That is, until Iron Man shows up looking for Spider-Man.
OR
“It’s not even Bucky's fault, really, that your parents are dead. He doesn't even remember doing it."
A voice, in the back of his mind, whispers. "It's not Strange's fault that you're alone now."
Peter continued, voice rising. "But you’re angry, at yourself, right? For letting it all happen. And now they’re gone, and you’ll never see them again, and what are you supposed to do, kill yourself over it?"
What are you supposed to do, when you look at your mentor and they see you as a stranger? What do you do, when all you are to your mentor is a a jumper to save before continuing on to the people he cares about?
"I lived with it." Mister Stark's reply was gentle, infuriatingly so, and it angered Peter. The older man would never understand, would never stop being better than Peter could ever be. He just... lived with it.
Peter couldn't live with it.

“I… could really use your help,” Peter forced out. “I know I webbed you that one time, so you probably won’t want to, but I don’t have anyone else to call. Aunt May is at work, Happy didn’t answer, and Tony isn’t… I’m all alone out here.”
Even when he was hurt, Peter still managed to ramble.
His last sentence made Bucky’s heart ache for the kid. Tony had probably been his go-to, but it had been months since he’d passed away.
Bucky went through the same thing with Steve. He had Sam now, but they hadn’t been close at first. It took them ages to build a relationship worth having.
“You’re not alone,” Bucky countered. “Where are you?”

He doesn’t remember when he officially signed up for this. Was it the moment he walked into Peter’s apartment to introduce himself? Was it the first time Peter almost died? When? When?
