Work Text:
It was a qui— slow shift at the firehouse today. Buck was in the bunk rooms, doomscrolling on his phone when something on TikTok caught his eye. It was a compilation of significant others asking their partners ragebait questions. He was thoroughly intrigued and wanted to try this trend on Eddie.
He and Eddie had finally gotten their heads out of their asses and had been together for 2 months. 2 months and 2 weeks to be exact. Buck watched the video several times, jotting down the questions on his notes app. He managed to write 9 questions. He made his way out of the bunk rooms, to the loft, where Eddie was.
☆☆☆
Eddie was sprawled on the loft couch, one arm thrown over the back cushion, the other lazily scrolling through his phone. He was completely oblivious to what was about to play in his face.
Buck made his way up the stairs, spotted Eddie, and sat down next to him. He tucked his phone away like he was hiding something.
“Hey Eddie.” Buck said, whilst pressing a chaste kiss on Eddie’s cheek. They couldn’t kiss due to the HR agreement they signed, and Eddie, who loves the ‘chain of command,’ refuses to kiss him. When they signed the HR papers, he told Buck in a serious tone, quote unquote, ‘it’s highly unprofessional Buck, we follow the chain of command’.
Eddie looked up slowly, narrowing his eyes. “What.”
Buck blinked at him innocently. Eddie knew Buck wanted something. He has been with Buck long enough to know what those eyes mean.
“Nothing! I just have some questions for you. For fun!” Buck said,“Hypothetical questions,” he added.
Eddie sighed, setting his phone to the side, turning all his attention to Buck. He loves to indulge Buck in his shenanigans. That’s what makes him Buck, and he loves him for that.
“Okay baby, ask away.” Eddie turned his body towards Buck, setting his elbow on the backrest of the couch, and staring intently at Buck's eyes.
Buck cleared his throat and took out his phone from behind the pillow where he ‘hid it’.
“Okay! First question…” Buck said, barely containing his grin. That made Eddie smile in return.
“If you were athletic, what sport would you play?”
Eddie stared at him for a long, silent moment.
“If I were athletic.” Eddie pointed at himself whilst repeating the question like he had heard it wrong.
Buck nodded earnestly, still grinning like a lunatic.
“Buck. I am a firefighter. I was in the Army. And I literally play basketball on Thursdays, you know that! You—” Eddie huffed unbelievingly. “You literally drop me off at the location.
Buck waved his hand at him dismissively. “It’s a hypothetical question Eds, just answer.”
“Answer— Answer the question?” Eddie pinched the bridge of his nose, then took a deep breath.
“Basketball,” Eddie said solemnly.
“It’s interesting that you didn’t argue more about it.”
“Yeah, which was very insulting by–”
“Moving on!” Buck cut Eddie off, still in a jolly mood. Eddie scoffed at the question. I mean how could he ask him that?
Eddie’s thoughts were cut off by Buck’s second question. Lord have mercy.
“Do you love me because I’m pretty, or am I pretty because you love me?” Buck asked.
Eddie who had briefly thought that the athletic question was bad, thought this was worse. Way worse. He took a breath, thinking of the choice of words. It felt like defusing a bomb.
After a moment, he finally replied, “I love you for who you are mi amor.” Eddie added the pet name to play it safe. Buck loved it when Eddie would call him pet names. So yeah, safe bet. Or that’s what Eddie thought.
Buck’s grin fell, and not in a good way.
“Oh.” Buck said quietly. “So I’m not pretty? You’re basically calling me ugly,” he said dramatically, crossing his arms against his chest.
“What—no! I—” Eddie made a helpless gesture at Buck’s body. Buck is pretty, the prettiest person on planet earth. Buck knows that.
“You’re pretty babe, Buck, you’re— people hit on you all the time, when we are at a call—”
“But you didn’t say it. Just now, when I asked. You said who I am.”
“Who you are includes your face and body! Which— which is the prettiest,” Eddie frustratedly yelped; it echoed through the loft. Ravi, who was trying his best to ignore these two, couldn’t help but pry in.
“Well, I mean you didn’t specify,” Ravi added in.
“Thank you! You get it.” Buck snapped his fingers and pointed at Ravi.
“Nobody asked for your opinion Rav.” Eddie deadpanned.
Ravi stuck his tongue out in Eddie’s direction, and high fived Buck.
“Okay, no need to give Ravi the stink eye, Eddie. It’s not his fault you gave the wrong answer. Next question!” Buck said, lightly shoving Eddie’s shoulder, not giving Eddie a chance to reply.
“Would you kiss a random guy to save my life?”
“Yes,” Eddie said without missing a beat. A little too quickly. “Obviously, if it meant saving your life, I’d kiss anyone.” Eddie smiled at Buck. He was satisfied with his answer.
Buck’s expression curdled.
“Oh no,” Ravi whispered, clearly scandalised by the answer. “It was nice knowing you Eddie,” he added, saluting Eddie.
“So you just wouldn’t try anything else first? No other option? You’d just take the opportunity to kiss another guy? You are literally a paramedic Eddie. An army medic—” Buck scoffed, turning to Ravi’s direction and giving him a look that said ‘can you believe this guy?’.
Ravi shook his head in disbelief.
“You said it would save you—” Eddie was cut off by Ravi.
“It’s interesting how fast you answered.”
Buck’s eyes widened at that and looked at Eddie, waiting for the justification of his answer. At that moment, Eddie knew he fucked up and Ravi was just adding more fuel to the fire.
“It was a life or death scenario!” Eddie exclaimed.
“For me. And your first instinct was kissing a stranger. Not CPR. Kissing, Eddie. Kissing.” Buck did make a good point. After all, Eddie was a paramedic for god's sake.
Eddie closed his eyes, and exhaled slowly through his nose. He was fucking sick of this stupid game. Who even made this. Eddie could hear Ravi snickering. Eddie opened his eyes to find Buck already staring at him, clearly annoyed by his answer.
Eddie leaned forward and pulled Buck by the neck. He started to kiss with deep desire. Buck was pushing at Eddie’s chest, indicating that he should stop, but that made Eddie kiss Buck even harder. Who was Buck to not respond with the same fervour?
Buck looped his arms around, pulling Eddie in, tongues clashing in a fight for dominance. Eddie did a thing with his tongue that gets Buck heady. Buck lightly moaned at the action, letting Eddie take control of the kiss.
Their make out session is interrupted by a cushion hitting them square in the face.
“Ravi, what the hell!” Eddie exclaimed as he pulled back. His lips were all red and puffy glistening with saliva.
“May I remind you of your contract? Also, nobody wants to see you guys making out like hungry animals at 12 in the fucking afternoon.” Ravi said as he threw another cushion at Buck to pull him out of his trance.
Buck looked at Eddie with a hungry expression, eyes filled with desire.
“You violated our HR contract to kiss me.” Buck said.
“I guess I did.” Eddie smirked as he leaned to press a chaste kiss on Buck’s lips again.
“I love you and only you. I promise you I would do anything it takes to save your life, if it ever comes to that, okay?” Eddie said softly as he caressed Buck’s face. He knew this was just a hypothetical question, but knowing Buck, and his insecurity about people staying in his life, he had to prove it to him.
Buck smiled at that, placing his hand over Eddie’s hand that was on his face.
“I love you too, babe. But don’t think I forgot about asking you these questions. Next one!” Buck said, clapping his hands together.
Eddie groaned at that. He really thought he could make Buck forget about the questions, especially with that tongue thing.
“If I was broke and homeless, would you still be with me?”
Eddie actually relaxed at this one, settling back into the couch, because finally—finally a question with a real answer.
“Of course I would. You would live with me. Obviously. Though,” he added, a small smile tugging at his mouth, “You’re kinda broke anyway with all the expensive things you buy. Like the cardigan—”
“That cardigan was an investment! You clearly loved it—”
“You bought that Lego set Chris looked at—”
“And that made our kid very happy,” Buck said. Our kid. Eddie couldn’t argue with that; after finally making Buck realise that Christopher wasn’t just Eddie’s kid, he was Buck’s too. And it did make Christopher happy. He wouldn’t stop gushing about how his Buck bought him the new Lego set that was the centre of topic in school nowadays.
"Yes, I’d still be with you. Broke, homeless and all. That’s not even a question, Buck.”
Buck went quiet for a second, as something flickered across his face. He smiled softly at Eddie.
“Finally a good answer, ready for the next one, Diaz?”
“Bring it on Buckley,” Eddie said with newfound confidence. He felt pleased with his response.
“Would you rather kiss me for ten dollars, or kiss someone else for ten million dollars?” Buck said.
Eddie blew out a breath. Ten million was a lot. It could pay off his car, Christopher’s future was on the line, maybe a new house down the line when they have another kid or two—
“Eddie.” Buck said, snapping his fingers in front of Eddie’s face, pulling him out of his daydream about their future.
“Buck. Baby… Ten million is a lot. Can it be Chimney? Or someone I know—” He got no further, because Buck had already shot to his feet.
“Why do you wanna kiss someone else so badly? And to make it worse, Chimney? My sister's husband Chimney? My brother-in-law Chimney? Our captain Chimney? Chimney Chimney?” Buck cried out.
“It’s ten million dollars baby, that’s Christopher’s college, that’s a house, that’s—”
“Oh, so there’s a price. Good to know. Ten million and my boyfriend kisses Chimney for it. Chimney.” Buck kept emphasising Chimney’s name.
“What about Chimney?” Chimney said as he got up the stairs to the loft.
“Oh you know, just my boyfriend wants to kiss you,” Buck said flatly, throwing daggers with his eyes toward Chimney.
“That’s not what I said, Buck. You asked if I would rather kiss you for ten dollars or kiss someone else for ten million dollars. To which I said, if it could be Chimney or someone I know,” Eddie said in one breath.
“Ooo Diaz you would kiss me for 10 million dollars? That’s good to know, I’m honoured,” Chimney said, throwing a smirk in Buck’s direction.
“Chim! You’re married to my sister? Why would you want to kiss my boyfriend when you have a wife?” Buck dramatically flung his arms out, clearly unsatisfied with the answer.
“And she’d be happy to know we won some money— wait, I’d get some money, right?” Chimney said, sitting down on the sofa next to Eddie.
“Oh yeah, we’d split it 50/50.” Eddie smiled at Chimney, patting his shoulder.
Buck hated this. He hated this stupid game. He was jealous, he was so jealous that he got up from his seat and sat right between Chimney and Eddie, linking his right arm with Eddie’s left. He intertwined their fingers, just to be safe.
“Yeah so that’s not happening— besides, it was a hypothetical question. No one is offering to see you two kiss for 10 million,” Buck said firmly as his grip on Eddie’s hand got harder.
Chimney threw his hands up in surrender, “Don’t worry, loverboy. I’m very much in love with my wife and no one’s taking him from you.” He got up and walked towards the kitchen.
“Baby, you know that I only love you, right?” Eddie said, pulling Buck even closer towards him.
“Yeah, you might’ve said once or twice,” Buck murmured, flustered by his reaction and Eddie’s softness.
Eddie brought up their interlinked hands, kissing the back of Buck’s, resting them over his lap.
“Are there more questions?” Eddie asked.
“Oh yes! If there were a hundred—” Buck started to giggle uncontrollably.
“What’s so funny babe,” Eddie said, looking dreamily at Buck. Buck had the most beautiful laugh, it was like music to his ears. It instantly made him smile too, seeing Buck laugh like this.
Buck wiped the tears from his eyes as he continued, “If there were a hundred dicks on the wall, how many would you—”
That immediately wiped the smile off of Eddie’s face.
“What the fuck, Buck!” Eddie exclaimed as he pulled his arm free from Buck’s grip.
“Answer the question,” Buck said, trying to contain his laugh.
“None! None!” Eddie answered instantly.
Buck nodded slowly, a smirk tugging on his face.
“That’s right. ‘Cause you’re a pro.” Buck said as he burst into laughter, Ravi joining in with him. They both fell to their knees on the floor, laughing uncontrollably, tears streaming down their faces. And looking at Eddie’s reaction made them laugh even more.
Eddie’s brain has visibly short circuited. His mouth moved, but no sound came out. He was caught off-guard by that.
The infectious laughter of Buck and Ravi filled the loft and soon everyone present couldn’t help but join in.
“It wasn’t even funny.” Eddie mumbled, but a small smile tugging at his lips. Soon Eddie joined in.
“Hah I’m so out of breath, N-Next question.” Buck said as he got up from the floor, situating himself right next to Eddie.
“There’s still more?” Eddie questioned.
“Yes, just two left. If you were in a room full of guys, would you still choose me?” Buck asked.
“Yes, of course, that’s not even a question.” Eddie beamed at Buck, but his answer didn’t seem to satisfy him.
“Why are you in a room full of guys?” Buck asked.
Eddie’s soul briefly left his body. You would think after answering these questions, Eddie would know the way around them, but yet again he managed to fuck it up.
“You put me in the room. It’s your hypothetical room.”
“Why would I ever willingly put you in a room full of guys… you suck at this game babe.” Buck snickered, clearly still not off the high of the previous question.
“Whatever. Finally, the last question. Get on with it.” Eddie said as he looked up, thanking the Lord. He was done with this game, but he loved Buck too much not to indulge him.
“Last one,” Buck announced. “If one of your exes called you, would you pick up?”
“No,” Eddie said flatly. “I would not.”
“Why would you still have their phone numbers?” Buck said.
“I’m gay, Buck.” Eddie deadpanned.
“Well— I—” Buck didn’t seem to have a retort for this, because all his exes were women and they didn’t exactly end on good terms for them to be calling Eddie, no matter how dire the situation may ever be.
“Hmm I guess I’d let this one pass,” Buck said as he snaked his arms around Eddie’s waist, resting his chin on Eddie’s shoulder. He pressed a chaste kiss on Eddie’s cheek.
“For the record, you failed. Miserably. But I still love you,” Buck said and rubbed his thumb in a comforting manner on Eddie’s waist.
“Yeah, yeah whatever.” Eddie said, resting his head on Buck’s head.
