Evelyn O’Connell intends to trade her last good brooch for enough food to keep herself and Rowan moving. By nightfall, the boy has stolen the wrong man’s horse, Evelyn has talked them both out of being shot, and the Van der Linde gang has offered them shelter until morning.
They have survived this long by never staying anywhere long enough to be known.
