Work Text:

Grian awoke to smoke in his room, the sound of an alarm ringing through the house they'd been living in for college with his roommate/boyfriend Mumbo, the after thought that he had heard someone screaming his name, and for him to wake up.

The little avian’s eyes widen as he rolls out of bed, landing on the floor, coughing as he breathes in a little smoke.

His eyes water from the air as he tries to move around his room.

The avian crawls across the floor to open his door to escape, but finds the door knob is radiating heat and based on the smoke pouring into the room from the top of the door, he decides to go to the window.

He crawls over to the window, standing up, holding his breath as he wiggles the window open, after a bit of struggling, he manages to open it, causing some of the smoke to pour out of it.

He looks out the 2nd story window and contemplates his next move, the avian could wait for help to come, or he could try to glide out.

Grian takes a deep breath of the clever air of the night and leans out the window.

The avian falls for a breath of a second before snapping his wings open, gliding down to the ground, landing a little rougher than he would have liked, coughing up his lungs as he sucks down fresh air.

Once he’s gotten a good breath into his chest, he looks back behind him at the house, burning.

It’s just him and Mumbo this week, the other tenants of the house had not moved in from the summer yet, and it has been just him and-

“-Mumbo!” Grian screams fearfully, his voice a little raw from the smoke inhalation.

He goes to run back to the house, but someone screaming his name stops him.

Standing out across the street is Mumbo, still in his pajamas, hair a mess, eyes red from crying.

The avian stands up, running over, crossing the street without even looking.

He runs straight into his partner, pressing frantic kisses to his face, the black mustache ticking his soot cover cheeks.

He falls into Mumbo’s arms, tears falling down his face, for a breath, he had thought he would never get to do this again.

The two of them stand there, holding each other close as emergency services arrive.
