I remember watching Blade Runner on cable when I was younger and not fully understanding the story or the science fiction themes. I didn’t think much about the movie until recently when Ilya and I were looking to watch something and it came up randomly. It surprised me how much I related to the elements inside the story, like the concept of determining one’s humanity through an ‘empathy test’. As a person who never really felt like I fit into the definition of what ‘normal’ is, I felt like I related more to being a ‘replicant’ or the ‘other’ more than what a ‘human’ was supposed to be. For the longest time, it was like I was simply going through the motions of life, living life on the sidelines as an observer, acting the way I think others want me to react, even though none of it felt natural to me. It wasn’t until I met Ilya that I felt truly accepted for being me, for being what other people may consider to be ‘weird’ or ‘non-human’, so it felt healing to watch this movie through a new lens with my favourite person. The heavy existence of Japanese-inspired culture and the cyberpunk futuristic landscape in the movie is also fascinating to me, something I should dive deeper into the next time I rewatch. What ultimately struck me the most is the ambiguity of whether Deckard was a human or a replicant, because in the end - does it matter?

My mom said when I was younger, I used to rewatch this movie over and over again on VHS in the original Japanese version, even though I didn’t know what the characters were saying. Maybe I was trying to learn the language and feel closer to my mom’s side of the family back in Japan? I hope one day I can watch without needing English subtitles.

Pretty rowdy but full of heart and very Canadian. I grew up watching hockey with my dad and played in the minor leagues too. Maybe in another life I would be a hockey player, who knows!
