"And that's Ursa Major, the great bear." Spike snorts. "'Course, you probably call it the Big Dipper."
"Oh!" Dawn smiles. "Yeah, I know that one."
"But I'm gonna teach you the real names."
She rolls her eyes. "You're so British."
"And?"
She shrugs.
Spike huffs, but continues. "You see the two stars at the end? If you imagine there's a line there and you follow it up, then almost straight up from there there's a bright star on its own."
"I see it!"
"That's the North Star, Polaris. If you can see that, you'll always know where north is."
"Oh."
"It's fixed, as if the rest of the sky rotates around it, at least from our point of view.
They're quiet for a bit. Dawn snuggles into his side.
"I miss her," she says eventually.
"I know, Bit. I know," he whispers.
The North Star is missing from their universe.
