Work Text:

A sigh reverberates through the dark room, emitted by a figure perched in front of a screen that emits a soft glow.

Rosa rubs at her eyes and lets out another sigh, before leaning back from the screen to massage her temples.

“Oh my god this is never gonna end…”, she mumbles under her breath making sure to keep her voice low.

Opting for a momentary peace in her tornado of stress, she pauses her complaints and looks up to the stairs, envisioning the man in their shared room just up the steps sleeping soundly.

A small smile paints across her face, and she stretches with a renewed strength.

"Well at least one of us is getting some sleep in..”, she thinks aloud muttering to herself, turning back and resuming her task.

She slips back into focus for a few seconds when she feels a hand land on her shoulder. Alarmed, she immediately grabs it and swivels to see a pale figure standing over her in the dark.

“Holy- Vyn! You scared me! What are you doing up so late?” She exclaims, breathing a sigh of relief at the sight of the familiar man.

Hi eyes widen at her surprise, and he furrows his eyebrows.

“My apologies, I didn’t mean to frighten you. I came down to retrieve a glass of water and couldn’t help but notice the light from the kitchen.” He explains apologetically and gently places his hand over the other’s, tightly grasping his wrist.

She shakes her head and smiles at him, “It’s okay, you just caught me off guard.”. He nods in response and glances past her shoulder at the laptop.

“Speaking of the light..what are you doing up at this hour? I did not feel you slip out, I was wondering where you were.” he says, tone laced with concern.

She leans to the side to give him a clearer view and gestures to the screen, “I’m just preparing some materials for an upcoming case.” she calmly explains, and turns to look back up at him to see a troubled expression on his face.

“Is this..an urgent matter?”, he asks carefully while squinting at the device.

She thinks for a second before replying, “Hmm..not exactly? It’s just more convenient for me to finish up with this as soon as possible.”.

He doesn’t seem convinced by the explanation and lightly pulls her hand towards him, “I’m worried that you are pressuring yourself into overwork again…come rest, and complete this in the morning if it does not require your immediate attention.”, he puts on a sweet tone in an effort to convince her—only to be met with refusal.

“Don’t worry about me, I’m almost done. You should go back to sleep, I’ll come up soon.” She counters, reaching a hand up to hold his cheek and strokes it with her thumb.

He sighs in defeat and releases his hand to press over the one on his face, holding it there for a moment before slowly pulling it away.

“It seems like I will not be able to change your mind…In that case I shall accompany you instead.”

Now her turn to be surprised, she quickly voices her protest while he steps away to switch on a nearby lamp.

“You shouldn’t, don’t you have to go into the clinic early tomorrow? You’ll regret it in the morning.”

However her pleas fall on deaf ears, and he continues walking back to take a seat on the sofa closest to her and reaches for one of the books placed on one of their side tables next to him.

“As you said, you are almost done, so I will be fine.” he replies looking up at her, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

She smiles hopelessly and closes her eyes for a moment to reconsider, ‘I seriously can’t win can I?’.

She opens her eyes to find him staring at her sweetly as if to sway her opinion.

“Okay, okay, fine..but you really can’t tell me you’re tired in the morning!” she exclaims, pointing a finger at him accusingly.

He nods in response and looks down to the book in his arms with a smile.

She watches him for a moment and the little frustration he’d incited within her dissipates, and she sits back down at her laptop to complete her work.

As time passes, and she pushes through each document, while he continues flipping through his book—she feels her eyelids grow heavier and her drive waning.

Feeling herself drift off she abruptly sits up and squeezes her eyes shut, opening them only to blink a couple times in an effort to refocus. Vyn looking over from where he’s seated, catches it and smiles, a mocking glint in his eyes.

“It seems as if you have reached your limit, let us return to bed.” he gently proposes, shutting his book and setting it down on the table he’d grabbed it from.

She instantly reaches a hand up to stop him.

“I’m fine, just give me a couple more minutes to wrap up, ‘kay?” she quickly replies, pleading with her eyes.

He sighs and leans back into his seat, “Very well..”.

She smiles and turns back to her computer, “I’ll be quick I promise!”.

He just nods and gazes at her form silently.

Minutes pass and he stops hearing the sharp click of her keyboard, he looks over and finds her dozed off in front of her laptop, head in her hands.

He can’t help but softly laugh at the sight and promptly walk over.

Assessing the situation for a few seconds, he pries her head away from her hands, supporting it with one of his and uses his other hand to shut the laptop in front of her.

He pushes it away and leans down to pull Rosa forward, moving his hand to support her neck and the other to reach under her knees.

He makes sure she's secure then slowly lifts her off the cushion, simultaneously pulling her body close to his.

He walks towards the stairs and uses his fingertips to push her head into the crook of his neck, gazing down at her fondly before walking up the steps.

Once he reaches the top he quickly enters their bedroom and lays her on their bed. Taking care to be as gentle as possible and adjusting her position to make sure she's comfortable even in her unconscious state.

After tucking her in, he walks around and fits into his own side of the mattress, covering himself with the comforter and moving closer to the other, pulling her into his embrace.

Within seconds he is deeply asleep, his breath imperceptibly rustling her hair.

It is hours later when the first of the sun's rays begin to peek out from beneath the curtains, casting its dim light across the room, that her eyes tentatively flutter open.

She groans and turns over to glance at the clock located at her bedside.

‘I swear I was just in the living room…’, she thinks to herself slowly recalling the events of the night, quickly coming to the conclusion that she must’ve fallen asleep and Vyn had resolved to bring them both back to their bedroom.

Rosa sighs and turns back over to face the culprit, she looks at his face across from her own and takes in his gentle expression, listening to his quiet breaths, silently counting every rise and fall of his chest.

It’s moments like this where she’s fully capable of appreciating his presence, able to stare at him and commit everything from his moles to his fallen eyelashes to memory—keeping it close to her heart like a treasured locket.

She reaches out and traces along every nook and cranny of his face with her fingertips in a mesmerised state. It was only a few moments before the disruption roused him from his sleep and his eyebrows furrowed knitting closely together.

She laughed soundlessly, careful not to wake him and smoothed the creases using her thumb, holding the side of his face with her palm.

After confirming that he had returned to his former state she averted her gaze to lean across and pull their comforter further up his shoulders. Only to find golden eyes staring into her own, causing her to abruptly let go of the cloth.

A few seconds pass and realization mixed with guilt begins to creep onto her face, she smiles apologetically and whispers, “Sorry did I wake you..?”.

He sighs and reaches out his arms to pull her closer towards him, ensuring she is positioned comfortably and strokes the back of her head.

In a hushed tone he replies, “Yes..however you can make up for it by falling back asleep with me.”.

She smiles and murmurs in response, “Gladly.” before shutting her eyes.

As they fell into slumber once more, the sunlight continued to spread, carefully enveloping their entwined figures in its warm embrace.
